  1. You know CJ, as an organist myself, I can vouch for the impossibley logical, coherent, unrushed world that is a John Patton solo. If you analyse his bassline on Latona, it's so difficult to play and solo over your head would explode. However, that difficulty is never passed on to the listener. Only another organist could appreciate it. That's the genius of Patton. Take his solo on "Shadow of Your Smile," every note is perfectly logical to it's scale, yet you'd never guess he was "thinking" at all while playing And keep in mind, Patton told me he was VERY nervous doing the "Let It Roll" session because Bobby Hutcherson was on it. All that beautiful organ playing on that record was under the gun for Patton.
  2. I'm looking forward to this. This is actually my favorite band that Jimi ever assembled.
  3. Saw him play with Herbie and Roy this year. Was the first time I was able to see him play. Wish him all the best in his continued quest to make music and live life.
  4. Ulmer is one jazz cat I'm totally unconvinced of. Sounds like a blues guitar player with bad technique to my ears. Dig him on Patton's late 60's stuff (guess it was his first recordings). But for even that, I'd love to hear almost anyone else on the session.
  5. Thanks for all the great help all...
  6. Bottom line on this film to me...EERIE. I dug it and plan to see it a 2nd time. I haven't seen a movie twice since...I can't even remember. 10 years at least.
  7. Thanks for the advice. Pearl's, Bruno's and Yoshi's in Oakland. Anything Organ stuff that anybody know of in San Francisco?
  8. Never dug the Trombone/Tenor of the front line. It seems a trumpet needs to be in there somewhere or nix the trombone (sorry Free For All )
  9. \ Yes, it's from the booklet of the Mosaic Select. The picture from the session with his eyes looking very swollen is also the cover of the Blue Note series...the one called Tenors and Organs...or something to that effect. I gave Big John that CD mainly for the cover, and asked him about it. He thought it looked freaky himself and said it was just the picture. Another thing I remember from that day...we put on that CD and the first cut is Jimmy Smith's "The Sermon." John listened for a minute and then said, "I wish I had that kind of talent." He ALWAYS underestimated his gifts and abilities. I think he was such a natural that it always seemed that way to him...
  10. O.K...these guys must be giving me bad info...(the LP was "Something Slick", not "Crash" that is the CD version). Anyway, had to take a shot at that one because it seemed like such a no brainer not even hearing it... from the description. Anyway....don't want to put you through the paces Jim on getting me the disc. But, if you feel bored....
  11. Don't have the disc....but from the posts above I would guess that track one is Jack McDuff w/Kenny Burrell "How High The Moon" from McDuff's Prestige "Crash" LP. It's a great arrangement with Harold Vick on tenor.
  12. THE BLACK SOULWICK TURNS 70
  13. Fav John Patton quote.... Hey Man, It's just a matter of finding those notes.
  14. Put on some Big John today and make everything alright. He would have been 70 years old today, July 12, 2005. We miss you Big John!
  15. Yes, you'd think Ravi's instruments would have been in Anvil-type flight cases???!!!! Wouldn't they???
  16. ...hmmm...I feel like a guy who just walked into a Star Trek convention....guess I'll show my way out...
  17. To me, and I dare say 99% of America for which these movies are made, Batman was a T.V. show based on a comic book nobody ever REALLY read. So to us, that means all you have to do to make an authentic Batman movie is put a guy in a Batman suit, drive some sort of Batcar, have a Batcave, Alfred and another persona called Bruce Wayne...and defeat some silly criminal trying to do in Gothan City. By that criteria ALL the Batman movies fit the bill of a REAL Batman movie. For those few grown men who read comic books, I guess it won't do. (sorry, low blow but I had to do it!)
  18. Gotta say, that's the kind of attitude that gave us the last couple of (horrible) Batman flicks... ← Yeah, but isn't that what comic book charactors should be doing? Kicking interesting criminals asses. I see nothing wrong with that. This one does the same thing, except it's buried in bat-istory. I'm not sure what makes this Batman a good one and the others bad. The special effects are better and you have some good supporting actors true. But I thought the story itself was pretty lame although well executed. Actually though the Batman with Michael Keaton was the best one.
  19. Not one of my faves. I'm not a huge fan of the Lonnie/Kudo period. Pretty low on the Lonnie list for me, but others may differ. ← On the other hand, I very much find this one a keeper. "Mama Wailer" is a great tune. Pick it up, SS1. ← I relistened to this the other day and found it absolutely inspired. Great LP I've really ignored unjustly. Ron Carter plays some super badass electric bass too.
  20. Batman Begins...but will it ever end. Just got back from seeing this. I think the television series Roots was actually shorter. And also, does lowering your voice automatically make you Batmanic, or was that acting? O.K...I know I'm being a little harsh. I thought it was o.k. overall. Just get tired (as I did in Star Wars, return of the sequel) that every single microscopic detail of backstory has to be filled in before any damn action or plot can take place in these frikkin' movies!!!! I don't give a shit that Batman learned karate in a temple for wayward gay bad guys. I don't care that he fell into a well and then flashbacked 8 million times. Just show me the bad guys and kick their ass. That's what we all want to see. 50 year old nerd males clutching comic books care about your silly backstories...the rest of us just want to see Batman punch a guy.
  21. Ever get the feeling as a musician that the more you try and run from your musical heros the more they catch up to you....
  22. Just got back from a Chinese place...they were playing Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower"....
  23. I'll be in downtown San Francisco from July 17th through 21 and want to hit one of the best jazz spots in town a night or two... Any suggestions???
  24. I don't have it. Just read about it on the AMG. Funny though....I was just listening to "Mama Wailer" yesterday and remember seeing his name in the credits....didn't put 2 and 2 together though today!
