Excellent post Jim. I will have to give Cannonball a closer listen. Thanks

I agree. My favorite Cannonball is the Live in Japan, Dizzy Business, cd's. Beautiful stuff.

They are excellent. These discs made me see Dexter in a whole new light. His playing here seemed almost effortless.IMHO My favorite is "Both Sides of Midnight" but all are excellent. If you don't have them do not hesitate to pick them up.

I'll restate my position at this point that Allen and I feel entirely differently about the quality of Dexter Gordon's playing, but I'm not feeling in any way offended or threatened by our difference of opinion and I've been happy to read the palate of interpretations. Went back and listened through my Dex collection to see if maybe it cheapened it for me...it didn't, they still make my desert island overnight bag. I agree with Troy on this one and I certainly do not want Allen to feel that he has to go into the "witness protection" program. I think his comments (while I don't agree) created one of the best threads we have had on the board in a while. No need to allow this to descend into anything more than artistic differences. Obviously the folks here have strong opinions about Dex, both positive and negative. That is what is fun about jazz. On more than one occasion I have had disagreements with friends about various players. Often I later change my mind. Some players I don't think I will ever "get" but these types of discussions make me listen to their work in a different light. I hope that we always be able to have open discussions and healthy disagreements on this board without personal attacks. That has killed more than one board that I know of!!! Remember how we all ended up here...D%&# glad we did. Best

A "friend" ???? Still a "friend".... Sorry. Wish I would have been there. Great lineup. -
I agree with both Victor and Jazzbo. It took me a really long time to "get" Dexter. Now I can't really get enough. He has just such great command. Truly amazing. It was his live recording at the Jazzhaus that opened the door for me. Body and Soul, Take the "A" Train, "Both Sides of Midnight". I had picked up BSOM a long time ago and threw it on the player just for background one day. After a couple of listens I thought I should explore it a little closer. I just got hooked. I then had to hunt the others down and they are all great.IMHO. I am still working on my Dexter collection(have all of the Blue Notes and Columbia and some Steeplechase) but those Black Lions are a must IMHO. I would also say that The Black Lions sounded better to me than the 1201's. I thought the 1201's had used some noise reduction in the remastering.I have both the 1201 and the black lion of Body and Soul and to me the Black Lion is a slight improvement. I would get these in any format I could find, however. They are great. Just my opinion. Take it for what it is worth

Defend an album with the fewest 'stars' on AMG
Morganized replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
If you can delete the "cover" tunes it isn't too bad. I experienced the same feeling recently with a Sonny Criss cd. I think a number of jazz artist were trying to reach a broader audience and covered pop tunes of the period with varying success. The Criss record was/is absolutely great but for me the cover tune just doesn't work. Has a great version of Scrapple from the Apple on it though. It was a hard time for jazz and I try to overlook and forgive the players for trying to make a decent living. It's almost like they phone in the cover tune just to satisfy the record company and then say, let me show you the "real thing" with the rest of the record. Just my opinion. -
(I'm assuming this is the cover.) That's the one Rooster. Thanks AMG didn't have the cover and the Board wouldn't let me post an Amazon image?? Thanks again.

I spotted these three discs at a local shop. They are hard to find, at least around here. I am interested in trades for some discs that I do not have. Shoot me a pm if interested. Easy Living...........Ike Quebec Tippin the Scales........Jackie McLean I'm Trying to Get Home.......Donald Byrd domestic version Z.T.'s Blues...........Stanley Turrentine

There's quite a few in the RVG series that were never Rudy's to begin with. Birth of the Cool and Clifford Brown's Jazz Immortal (not even Blue Notes) and most of Miles Volumes 1 & 2 for instance. So, it's not without precedence. Those Hutcherson/ Land albums get my vote. Thanks Rosco, Maybe I am not losing it after all. It does bring up an interesting point. Query. Which version do people like better? Does Rudy "improve" the original? Maybe the making of a new thread. Especially in light of the recent announcement by Prestige/Concord/OJC that some of their sessions may get the RVG treatment.
-
Yes, why can't they hand him this one to play around with? Who cares if he wasn't the original engineer? Am I mistaken in thinking that is exactly what happened on Lonnie Smith's Think? I seem to recall noticing that the recording session did not take place in Rudy's studio and he did not handle the original recording session. My memory might not be correct but I am sure someone will "correct" me if necessary.

9 of 12 for me. Missed an easy one. My copy of Long Tall Dex doesnt' have 17 cuts on it I don't think. Should have known since it was the Savoy release. For me it was Dex's Black Lion releases.....Flawless IMHO. That is where I would start. After that you will "get" it all. Love his Steeplechase work as well.

Could not agree more!! All we need is another fomat based upon antidotal evidence. I read about a new format a long time ago when the record companies were just starting to try to combat illegal copying. The intent was never "improved" sound. Until I see SACD burners readily available and affordable, just call me skeptical!

tonym, You are having a mighty fine evening....afternoon.....morning... whatever...... Great stuff.

I'd really like some explaination of the meaning of these sentences. ← Hello Chuck, Now I think I know how it must feel to be a member of the panel on the McGaughlin Report. Just waiting for Chuck to chime in with a ........WRONG!!!! No harm intended here Chuck. Just an opinion. I apologize if I was not clear. On the McMaster during some of Hank's solo's the rhythm section seems much more prominent/pronounced than on the RVG. IMHO. To ME the RVG of this one sounded more life like. That is all.
-
I have found this to be the case on many of the RVGs. But for.. the increased volume, I cannot always discern a significant change.( Not trying to re-plow old turf just stating my opinion!!!) On the other hand...... I recently decided to pick up the RVG of Hank Mobley's Hi Voltage. It is one of my favorite Hank dates and after listening to the McMaster I thought it could use some improvement. The RVG is much improved IMHO. In the McMaster Hank is very deep in the mix. The RVG seems much more balanced. As I said, just my opnion. I would welcome other comments. Maybe we need to start a new thread. Do not want to hijack Peter's thread. I am curious as to what may be coming down the pike as well.
-
Agreed. I picked this one up not too very long ago and it started me on a Jim Hall kick. That led to his collaborations with Paul Desmond. Got stuck there for a while. Hall's touch is fantastic. He reminds me of Miles' famous quote that it is often the notes that you do not play that are more important than the ones you do. He plays what he needs to play at just the right time. This is a good record and if you are not familiar with a lot of Jim Hall's work it is a good place to start. IMHO

Don't know about the "moanin' " but I am in agreement with the everything else. You just don't get any bad Lee Morgan.....just some better than others!!

Spotted some hard to find Blue Notes in a recent visit to a shop I frequent: TWO HEADED FREEP........RONNIE FOSTER ALSO: LOU DONALDSON..........QUARTET, QUINTET, SEXTET TOCJ/no OBI..... Both VG shape/ may have light surface scuffs that do not affect play. If anyone has been looking for one of these shoot me a pm... As always.....Trades first/ then sales. Thanks

I bought the Japanese reissue of that date: The RCA box seems to be getting a few knocks on this thread. I'd be surprised if the sound wasn't an improvement over the earlier Mosaic. I also like the packaging of the RCA - sturdy construction, informative essays, etc. Also, the tracks are laid out so that each cd corresponds with one of the original albums, with additional bonus tracks - a definate plus in my book. Of course, in the past few years the original recordings have been reissued individually by BMG. No matter how you get it, get it! These recordings are wonderful. ← So if I have this disc(which I do and love) and I get the RCA box, I should have everything. How many discs in the RCA box?
