I like the Yoshi's cds better than the new Kennedy Center. The recording is usually very good - excellent on MxJazz cds.I'm with you,I like the graphics and digipack cases-very elegant. KUDOS TO MAXJAZZ.

I agree with other's comments.I listened to "Lontano" late last night on headphones. It is very well recorded (nothing new for ECM),a tad less resonant than usual. The pianist is definitely one to watch for.Their trio cd is wonderful, very atmospheric-late night sounds, but veeery nice.Kudos for Tomas for snagging this trio. Bobby Watson's "Love Remains" !! great band,on the Italian RED label -
I agree with SOULSTATION, "Ju ngle Soul" has a good evening/late groove. The good Dr. is still swinging in good company.A cd well worth several spins.

I just saw a picture in Downbeat of McCoy backstage with BB King (from April).McCoy looked terrible, very gaunt and sickly.I hope it isn't the big C.Does anybody know McCoy's condition and how he's doing currently? I hope for the best, for a musician who has given me sooo much pleasure.

NEW LOCAL ?? I have been twice to NSJazz,in the old Hague location. How was the new Rotterdam locale? Anyboby been to both to compare. The "Human Gridlock" problem was very evident in the Hague. One piece of advice I can give rookies to avoid such problems is to find a room with several groups in a row that are to your liking and stay put.Let the music come to you ! North Sea is an intense Jazz experience, not for the faint of heart,or casual fan.It is definetly for the Jazz Warrior (maniac).Having just returned from Umbria Jazz for the 7th time,I can say it is a much more pleasing experience, better food, better wine, better environment, better looking women, more mellow. A buddy and I saw 3-5 shows/day,with ample down time between shows.I highly recommend it,but I live in Italy so perhaps I'm biased. But many American friends who have come, confirm my thoughts. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Jamie Cullum-nice stage presence, interesting voice, good songs (yes, that were pop-influenced also),good piano playing,a good time!! Herbie Hancock was disappointing. This was the third time seeing him and I was let down again.I await a Jazz trio formation. This was with a violinist,African guitar, electric bass, drums. There some good moments, but most of it left me cold. Pat Metheny was very good also.I saw him in various formations.Him sitting in with Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava was a highlight (especially the two in duo). Viva la Jazz !

RIP Jazz man After seeing and sharing many moments, dinners with John thanks to his association with Bobby Watson, may I tell this story. I once hosted John here in southern Italy at a Jazz festival about 6 years ago.He was coming from NY to perform and missed his connecting flight in Zurich (I think),meanwhile the crowd was getting anxious as the warm up act overplayed.I was in constant contact with the driver as to his whereabouts, trying to calm the agitated crowd.Basically he got off a stage in NYC and went straight to the airport and straight to our stage,no hotel,no shower! When he arrived at the venue,I was there to open the van door.I asked John how are you and what do you need? His warm, tired face looked at me thankfully a said, "Man Jeff,I'm just tryin' to get to the bandstand, once I get there it will be alright.I'd like some red wine (we were in Italy) and some water". Water and wine, like Jesus I said-you got it. After changing his clothes and having a few sips of each,he hit the stage-looking quite dapper on the warm summer night.I told the crowd of his trevails, stating that he had come from the NYC stage to this one directly."So please give a huge hand for our Jazz Warrior-John Hicks"!! He began the concert playing a 5 min. absolutely beautiful, mesmerizing solo,he then looked up and "hooked" up with the local rhythm section (who he had not prior) and had been waiting for him since long before his arrival on stage, and together the trio locked in and played a fantastic concert!! That is one of my best memories of John Hicks, total Jazz pro, gentleman, with a wonderful heart ! Thankyou John, for all your years in the Jazz Service, your music will be felt and remembered. RIP, Dr. Jeff

THE SOUND QUALITY SUCKS !!!!!!!! I am a big Pepper fan,but this is bordering on unlistenable (at least the second cd). I will be trading this immediately, even if I bought it for 15 euro.Anyone want to buy it? Send me a pm. Otherwise listen to the Vanguard recordings for good live Art!! Dr. Jeff

Anyone have any thoughts on alto phenom Bobby Watson. The guy led the Messengers for several years,is a prolific writer,a sound to die for, tecnique out the a**,and a hell of a nice guy. So why isn't he more famous? He has a sizeable catalogue as leader (great Blue Notes,Columbias, Red records) and sideman. What are some your favorite Watson recordings? A BW fan.
