  1. Thank you all for the input,I appreciate it ! I have since found some of these tracks on You tube, sound quality varies.
  2. I am quite enticed by this pairing. I would like to know if anyone has heard these concerts in some form? I really would like to know about the sound quality? Bad recordings really put me off. Thanks Jazz fans.
  3. Has anyone heard this new offering from BE trio recorded in '76 in Madison,Wisconsin ?
  4. Ciao Lon,

I saw that you ordered the new Hank Mobley from Jazz Messengers.I used to order from them monthly for years-great store ! I visited them in Madrid.

I was wondering if you've received it,how is it and how is the sound?

    Thanks Lon,  Jeff

Just saw this, only shows up on my profile page, and noticed it because for some reason it shows up on rooster tie's phone when he looks at the board and he's seeing things that look like private messages to him. Interesting!

No Jeff, haven't received this from Jazz Messengers, usually takes more time than has passed since the shipping date, probably will be a week or so more before I have it. There are favorable reviews of the release though on the thread about the release, and most seem to say that the sound is quite good on two of the three sessions, and okay on the third.

  5. Great article ! I had the pleasure of hosting Ray Brown' s group at a local Italian Jazz festival maybe 12 years ago. Besides enjoying a great show and dining with the band (sitting across from Ray and next to Hank Jones),I acted as translator for Ray for an Italian jazz magazine writer. The writer asked several questions along the lines "Miles Davis continued to innovate his sound his entire career but your bass playing has remained in the same style, why"? Mr. Brown didn't take too kindly to this line of questioning and was visibly perturbed. He said to me "Jeff , this guy better get some new questions or this interview will be over fast". I said Ray don't shoot me I'm just the messenger." Rest assure I gave theoblivious writer the lowdown but the interview was pretty brief ! Don't mess with Mr. Brown ! Great article ! 6. Yes I did. They list the same titles (S. Turrentine, L. Donalson) that have been available for pre order for what seems like 6 months or more.
  7. What happened to XRCDs from Elusive disc ? They haven't released anything new for awhile. I have about ten of these titles and all are excellent ! Please Elusive disc get it together. Three cheers (or more) for Alan Yoshida's mastering = EXCELLENCE !!

  11. Hello board members, Am going to Japan (Tokyo/Kyoto) in mid-April.Can anyone give me some tips on good venues for live Jazz as well as Jazz music stores (cds) new and used? Thanks much, Jeff
  12. Jeffsjazz here. I must agree with several posters. This cd is simply fantastic and a concept cd that hits it out of the park. By far her best recording ! "Too young to go Steady", gives me goose bumps.Listen to it on a nice valve system to get that warmth ! Absolutely gorgeous !
  13. Not to ruffle anyone's feathers but why are clickable links frowned upon?
  14. Our Spanish friends ? (depends on your point of view I guess) have released these live titles: 1) THE COMPLETE 1966 GENEVA CONCERT + 2 BONUS (CD)- Thelonius Monk http://www.jazzmessengers.co/en/68154/thelonious-monk/the-complete-1966-geneva-concert-2-bonus 2) AT THE CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL 1987 (CD)- DEXTER GORDON AND BOBBY HUTCHERSON http://www.jazzmessengers.co/en/68163/dexter-gordon/at-the-chicago- jazz-festival-1987 3) THE COMPLETE STORYVILLE BROADCASTS (CD)- DAVE BRUBECK AND PAUL DESMOND http://www.jazzmessengers.co/en/68151/dave-brubeck/the-complete- storyville-broadcasts Has anyone heard or purchased these ? How are the performances/recording quality? I need good- great sound, otherwise it bothers me on my system. Thanks for the input, Jeff
  15. I bought a pair of LS3/5 clone design,or actually based on them on ebay UK several years ago,for $300 (used) and sound fantastic ! AVI Neutron 5 speakers- assembled in Britain. Check them out,you won't be disappointed. My second system, much like your needs, are filled by a pair of Epos (also English). I can't remember the model but they don't make them anymore but other models are available-great value.I paid $150 used in pristine condition. Hope that helps.
  16. Nice playing, ATROCIOUS sound. Buyer beware,I bought this and feel ripped off ! Horace sounds like he's in another room playing and the mic sounds like it was covered by a blanket !! Always be weary of those Spaniards !
  17. Brownie, Do you have this reissue? I just ordered it as I was intrigued by the group. Howis the sound? Thanks, Jeff
  18. Probably about the same as the 3-CD set from Definitive that covers 1946-51 (master takes only). Yes, and what was the sound like on that one? I have this set and the sound is quite good considering it's age. Keep in mind tht I don't like bad recordings, especially heard through good stereo gear. This one is well worth the investment.
  19. IIRC it was either Hentoff or Ira Gitler who said that, in the late '50s, and the writer later explained that he was referring to his tone, not the quality of playing. Mobley's tone in the '50s was more Lester-leaning than it later became, but it was somewhere between the "brothers" school and the Hawk/Byas/Webster/Rollins tone school. The rhythm section was so damn hot at that point it was probably inevitable that they'd spin off as a working trio. Blackhawk recordings are my FAVORITE live Miles ! I love hearing Mobley live and the sound is wonderful and I'm from San Francisco ! peace,JJ
  20. Can anyone comment on the sound quality? The sound samples sound fairly good but am curious as to the actual cd sound.
  21. I received the new box set (complete and in recorded order) some days ago.Am loving it!! I have one of the volumes and several others on CD-R. The box set is well done and the sound is wonderful.I was listening to the XRCD of Miles' "Bags Groove" which sounds fantastic immediately after listening to one of these volumes and the sound was quite fine by comparison-I am impressed.Nice recording work by Mr. Nunn and Contemporary! I had waited years for this to be re-released remastered as a box set by Fantasy or now Concord, don't hold your breath folks! Leave it to the Spaniards, but give credit where it is due. THIS IS TOP FLIGHT 50's JAZZ THAT DESERVES TO BE HEARD IN IT'S ENTIRETY!! Buy this box set,you won't regret it. Dr. Jeff
