  1. Onslow - String Quartet Op.9/1 Chadwick - String Quartet No.3
  2. Mozart - K.481 and K.526 Brahms - Piano Quartet No.3, Op.60
  3. Last night went to a concert featuring the excellent vocalist- Veronica Swift. She is the daughter of Hod O'Brien.
  4. I recall reading a fairly lengthy interview with Claude Williamson in Cadence Magazine a number of years ago. Claude filled in a lot of information regarding his brother Stu. Unfortunately don't recall any of the details.
  5. This is a CD that features great jazz from the 40's. The number of musicians who play here in a variety of groups is extremely large. One track even has vocals from both Stan Kenton and Benny Goodman. Another interesting item is that 2 tunes with group titled "Ten Cats And A Mouse" has Peggy Lee on drums.
  6. Interesting that during that same time period, I had been writing about the jazz scene in Detroit for CODA.
  7. I am also someone who like Stu Williamson's playing. He also played valve trombone, but it is his trumpet playing that especially stands out
  8. Disc 1 I really love Morgan's 50's recordings. This disc has sidemen such as Clarence Sharpe, Horace Silver, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones on 7 tracks. The remaining 3 tracks have Kenny Rodgers (Alto), Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Paul Chambers and Charlie Persip.
  9. Mozart - Piano Concerto No.17, K.453 Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto
  10. Last nights concert was very good. David Hazeltine on piano and The New York Allstars. The group included Vincent Herring on alto, Eric Alexander on tenor, Peter Washington on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums. The Louis Rich Theatre was 95% full, and the audience was very responsive to the music..The musicians seemed to having fun and the two sets were both filled with a good selection of tunes played with enthusiasm and passion. This was the first Tucson Jazz Festival concert I have attended. Tonight we will be going to our second Tucson Jazz Festival event. It will be to hear vocalist Veronica Swift. We have heard her before and she is the real thing.A true jazz singer.
  11. Sacchini - 6 String Quartets - Quartetto Academica - IL Canale DC-U09
  12. In the 50's, Waldron was not one of my favorite jazz pianists. I much preferred to hear Sonny Clark, Horace Silver, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Ray Bryant and many others. But Mal's recordings in the 50's tended to be more in the straight ahead vein. He most often was playing with bebop or hard bop oriented players who wanted to swing. The Mal Waldron I have heard from his later periods had veered away from the style of playing I prefer to hear.
  13. So if there are 8 people in an Octet, wonder how many people are in a Quartet???????
