yeah, rhythmically her songs are cool with the percussion, uses of funk and jazz influenced basslines and harmony. I agree that production wise the 5 or 6 songs from "Love Deluxe" hold up better, and though generally I'm not a fan of vocalists, I do listen to the lyrics in her songs, "Pearls" is some heavy stuff. A friend of mine was saying how he prefers Janet Jackson's blatantly sexual lyrics on tunes like "Warmth" over Sade, but for me there's no contest.

Ferdinand Jay Smith also composed the HBO World Championship Boxing theme songs, which are stuck in my head. Especially the one from the mid 80's.

she uses real drummers, Paul Cooke is an ass about his time in the band. I wonder what attracts a lot of us jazzheads to the music. I wonder if Sade could swing on a standard, probably not though. BTW GA Russell, would yourecommend the "Lovers Live" CD or DVD? I've seen clips on YT and I love the Chinese dress she wears on that, but is the CD pretty much the same as the DVD?

yeah I look forward to when her new album hits. She seems to be fairly personable. Yeah, the jazz chords and things is what attracts me to her thing. I kind of ignored it in the 80's and 90's, it was just kind of there. But she has a great band, they've been together over 20 years, a rare thing.

I'm sure the name will make many gag here, but I picked up her Best of last week. I dunno what it was that made me pay attention to her stuff now, but it is hipper than most R&B and soul on the radio nowadays. Excellent mood music though.

I have the Legacy Edition, and find the sound much better than the Miles/Gil set. Although on disc 2 I skip the live "Aranjuez" because I have the Complete Carnegie Hall, 1961 disc.

yeah JOS' intros were amazing on "Groovin at Smalls". The ending of "Laura" is definitely surreal. For me, my fav. JOS albums will always be "The Sermon", "Houseparty" and "Midnight Special". All indispensable records for me, since I was a baby.

for me, the Bobby Hutcherson Mosaic hasn't lived up to the hype for me beyond "Cirrus". I'm holding onto it tho, I doubt someone would trade me the big Elvin box for it.

I love this album, my fav. Shorter, bought it a few weeks ago. I like the RVG's sound.

I'll second the recommendations for the High Note discs, "Isabel the Liberator" on the second volume is a fav. of mine. "Stepping Stones" is an essential disc too. I want to pick up "Master of the Art" and "Night Music" eventually.

I own the original LP (which I know, appears to be just as 'legit' (not) as the CD you have), so it's really a question of wanting the material from my preferred media source (CD). I do own the box set, but that version of "Power To The People" from the Everest LP is really fantastic, and unique - since no other live version of the tune was ever released (legit). Mine disc says Everest.

Gatti always was a fav. of mine, he gave us tons of memories. Probably the 2nd greatest trilogy of in my generation of fans.

I came across an old rec.music.bluenote post mentioning that a take of "Black Narcissus" exists from the "In Japan" session not included on the box, as well as the bass/drums solos edited out from that album's take of "Blue Bossa". Anyone know why the set was issued this way? it's fantastic regardless, but just kind of strange it's incomplete.
