  1. I remember listening to "A Secret Place" on vinyl as a kid, the best thing about it is that version of "Dolphin Dance". I second Grover playing his ass off, I love his playing on "CTI Summer Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl", "Breakout", the appearance on the "One Night With Blue Note" DVD, and Joey D's "Live at the Five Spot". When going to CVS of all places, they play "Just the Two of Us" a lot over their music cycle and I stop to just listen to that solo.
  2. right on felser. Benson's playing is torrid on that album, despite Ron Carter's cello playing. Shame the '97 remaster is OOP, I had to get the UK import, which is jewelcased and is otherwise the same as the '97 US edition.
  3. oh yeah, Stanley goes a little out on "Povo". That's definitely surprising if you haven't heard this album before. I think he was a much more agile player than people give him credit for. Also DeJohnette pushes really hard on vol. 1.
  4. I love Brad's solo on "Tumbleweed", and how he inserts that "He's a Real Gone Guy" quote there, he's such a serious dude that I imagine him playing that in the studio totally expressionless. Herbie is just a monster on "Loose Threads" one of the best recent solos on record I've heard from him in years.
  5. I wrote a review for AAJ which has yet to be published. IMHO, its the best Brecker album ever. And Herbie on Rhodes!!!!
  6. I gotta get Caravanserai. "Lotus" is probably my favorite Santana album though, it's a great record.
  7. ooh, a Ron Carter orgy!!!!?? man, if it includes his cello playing I don't know if I can contain my well, you know.......................................
  8. yes, he did. But Joey sounds like Joey on this album.
  9. wow. I am so broke.
  10. received it today and finished my first spin. This is the best Michael Brecker album, period. Its going to really hit you hard emotionally for those of you who love Mike.
  11. A promo should be in my hands any day now.

  13. didn't know that, thanks Rosco. How is that session?
  14. yes when the Second Quintet box arrives I will rip the original track order for Miles Smiles to my MP3 player as well as ESP for when I go somewhere. Those two+ Nefertiti are my fav albums of the band. Looking forward to all the extra material too! I remember when I mentioned buying the remastered Miles discs, many here were like "go for the sets!" so it's kind of funny how some people are preferring the original album sequences. The metal spine sets are pretty, but not for regular use, it is so tough trying to read the booklets bound by the metal spines! IIRC, the Miles/Gil box had two booklets.
  15. well, I decided to make the investment in the Second Quintet box as I love that material. Something really changed my view of Miles boxes, when I bought the Prestige Quintet box last year, hearing those albums, in session order was revelatory for me, and made me enjoy the music more. I ordered the longbox version of the 65-68 stuff BTW. I feel the sting of having sold KOB and Milestones, but I figure, hey, I will recoup that music with the Miles/Trane box. I will always keep my individual discs of "Someday My Prince Will Come", and the 63-4 stuff because well, for those I like having the original album form
  16. I have been considering his organ trio album, but a lot of opinions here and elsewhere mostly say it's a dud.
  17. and I ordered the Second Quintet box this evening...... finally decided I need it b/c I love that band so much. Now my question, I sold most of the single disc Miles Columbia's with Trane, but I kept the Legacy Edition "Round About Midnight" and "Someday My Prince Will Come" as I know the Miles/Trane box only collects the 2 tunes from those sessions he appears on. Now, when I buy the Miles/Trane set (probably next month), with that and RAM and "Someday My Prince Will Come" I will have all of what Miles and Trane recorded for Columbia correct? I have all the single CD's of the '63-4 studio and live material and of course the Blackhawk, Prestige Quintet and PN boxes.
  18. thanks for that info SS! I had no idea it was based off "What is this Thing Called Love". I will have to listen to the changes next time I put it on.
  19. yes, I agree. Red Clay and Sugar are probably the best CTI albums out there, they hold up very well. A lot of people must have done who knows what on Sugar's cover though!
  20. damn, another one gone.
  21. In Concert with Stanley Turrentine is very nice. Features Herbie and Jack DeJohnette
  22. I thought around 2003 or 4 when the RVG's used the same masters as the JRVG's? b/c around 2000 or so the sound of them really got better such as the JM Cafe Bohemia albums and such.
  23. his self titled is a classic. No wasted talent there.
  24. I am interested in this Trio of Doom stuff, to hear if its as bad as all of you are saying!
