  1. M. Same here when I had the original CD. Although it is not one of my favs, its tempting to buy the reissue to hear the new stuff and reevaluate the record, because despite my tastes it is a landmark record in the Metheny catalog. I just know that when they reissue "Zero Tolerance for Silence", I am skipping that one However if Pat decides to add bonus tracks to the other albums like live versions, that will be cool. I wonder if he'll do an expanded "Road to You", I have two CD's of A+ quality(sound and music wise) of takes they did not use for that album, how they started floating around, I dunno
  2. hey Jim, I'll write a review soon myself, but............ was the take of "Smoking Section" unsatisfactory to you guys? cuz at the end I hear "that one sucked, we need to tape it over" the take sounded fine to me.
  3. unfortunately I think it'll only be a small group like us, that recognize Hank as a genius. (Probably noone more so than Aric )
  4. the more and more I think about the circumstances surrounding the end of Hank's life it makes me very sad. I can only hope that when I have a career and some money I could help great jazz musicians like him get off the street if they are in need of serious help. I may go pull disc 5 from the Mosaic in a bit and listen.
  5. yes, SS1, its that percussive way of playing that Ray Crawford developed in the Ahmad Jamal trio.
  6. Randy, you look like Paul Wertico in your portrait seriously, your face reminds me of Wertico.
  7. wow, great story.... kind of bittersweet too. What went on at those jam sessions after the One Night With Blue Note concert?
  8. Birdland and Bohemia for me. With the Bohemia discs getting the slight edge.
  9. what a great name for another herbie-album! Hard as a cock! ← the new single from "Hard As A Cock", "Han on my Cock" featuring Akinyele! (somebody BETTER get that reference!
  10. Jim, Joe, Randy, got my copy today what a great disc. The writing and chemistry has improved tremendously, "Greaze Monkey" and its 6/8 bridge/interlude thing had me hollering out it felt so good to hear there. The 6/8 again towards the end had the feeling of the transition to third section of PMG's "Third Wind" to my ear, very nice. "Smoking Section", OUCH!! may cause fires if unattended! I gotta get some of the local musicians I know to hear that one. "Stomp Yo Feets" well, that tune is sooo funky that Soulive couldn't even pull a tune out their ass like that if they wanted to You guys are bringing da organ funky fizzle fo rizzle. "Tenderly" just beautiful, Randy I dug your Gadd like groove there The Zappa tune, can't say I am a fan of FZ but you guys sure made it interesting. Thanks for making an organ record that doesn't necessarily conform to the typical idea of what an organ record *should* be. And you guys gotta play my area sometime. Unfortunately I graduated so can't really help with the Harpur Jazz Project, and to be honest with the exception of the advisor, my former teacher, I have zero faith in the new membership of the HJP. None of them have jazz as a huge big thing in their life like I do However some new joints have opened in the area recently, so if you want info Jim, drop me a PM if you'd like.
  11. yes, it is. What was more touching was when his management personally replied to my email, saying he had read it. I shared a story from my personal life in there.
  12. nope SS1, the tunes on the RVG are from 6/17-18/56, not 2/11-13/57 like the Mosaic set.
  13. I listened to soundclips of the RVG vol. 3, sounded too trebly to me compared to the original US reissue, I'm not upping this one, too much other stuff I'd like to hear.
  14. I played "Slightly Monkish" for a friend once and got a weird look. His comping behind Thornel Schwartz on that is hilarious. boo boo be boo boo boo be boo boo ::changes stops:: BAH!
  15. I haven't heard him outside "Serenade for a Soul Sister" but the set looks tempting.
  16. waiting for my copy ^.^ preordered back in June.
  17. Yes, SS1 that set is well worth searching for, if only to hear the second album that produced "The Champ."Me being the huge JOS fan I am, never listened to his first album as much as his second and third.
  18. I have the Mosaic too thankfully. "The Duel" sounds to me as if it predates free jazz in a way, does this track indeed go "out", Jim, Soulstream, anybody?
  19. those are GREAT essential Jimmy Smith albums. However, those vols, do not correspond with "Jimmy Smith At the Organ, Volume 3." Volume 3 is a follow up to "A New Sound, A New Star, Jimmy Smith At the Organ" volumes 1&2 which were Blue Note 1512 and 1514
  20. shame, I love his work on "Walkin" by Miles.
  21. AT THE ORGAN are actually BLP 1551 AND 1552.
  22. SS1 you burn CD's of the stuff you d/l from emusic? I used to do that cuz its less than the cost of buying an album from Fantasy's list price.
  23. anyway, anyone receive the RVG vol. 3 yet? I don't want to replace my copy from the 2 disc set, is the sound a huge leap? I thought it was decent on the 2 disc set. I never replaced by "Home Cookin" either for the RVG. Didn't need to.
