  1. thanks Rachel . "Double Guatemala" is just funny to me, because the tune is like so Pat in the way its contoured but so simple at the same time. What exactly is a Double Guatemala anyway? lol
  2. as for other guitarists, Pat Metheny does allow taping and trading of his shows just as long as he doesn't see the red recording light, then he'll sort of self edit.
  3. my DVD player has a slight pause between tracks and gets kind of annoying on live albums.
  4. I have a couple live gigs from this tour from Monterey and just the trio in Oakland. The Oakland show contains a version of Q&A that may top IMO the definitive version on the "Trio Live" record, Pat decides to skronk out halfway through and its funny. "Double Guatemala" cracks me up, Rachel, was that the guitar synth on that one with just the straight tone and distortion? David Sanchez doesn't have the fire that Brecker added with Pat but his tone reminds me of Joe Henderson, which I like.
  5. gotta pull this out again, bought it backn a few weeks ago. I love that montuno John and Grant get on "Latona".
  6. I've kept Live in Tokyo, and got tired of albums like Heavy Weather and Black Market. There are great tunes on those albums, but Live in Tokyo, which admittedly I have to be in a mood to listen to, is the hottest WR I've ever heard on record.
  7. thanks David. Hope Hub is playing well these days. I don't know how you feel about the subject but I got a copy of a live show from FM Radio of a Berlin Jazzfest with Freddie and Woody Shaw and Dizzy together, quite fun to listen to.
  8. sweet a live album coming.
  9. nah Porcy, he just wrote the lyrics.
  10. only Kenny G. I'd go see is Kenny Garrett the REAL Kenny G.

aww I must have given Chuck a fever Seriously tho, "CTI Summer Jazz At the Hollywood Bowl" is one of my favorite albums, I grew up on it.
  12. yes Jim there is quite wild playing on the Mosaic box for sure I haven't listened to the first disc in ages.
  13. I also agree on Jimmy playing sheets of sound before Trane.
  14. interesting posts John and Jim. I don't have much to add other than each time I've listened to Wood, the consistency in the work is quite wonderful. BUT.......... Branford's rant which I read was really out of line. I enjoy quite a bit of Bran's music, but some of his opinions I feel have been laced with personal attacks, such as his account of Miles response to Wynton when he jumped uninvited on stage, citing Miles reaction as he knew his chops were shot and couldn't play anymore. And, Dr. George Butler, always thought what he did was a joke but the info on this thread definitely tells me that a lot of the crap music he produced was a result that he didn't know anything but cash money.
  15. thanks Jim. The JOS live boot I found of the same band except for BB and Zoot, his solo on "Walkin'" made my jaw drop. first time my jaw has dropped listening to JOS since "Legacy". I gotta get some more CD-R's so I can burn the Germany set........ A+ sound too.
  16. Pat primarily used the Synclavier guitar synth on this session, not his trademark Roland GR300 (the weird trumpet sound) synth. And, whenever he soloed in the Synclav guitar he would use a sax sample mixed with the guitar tone, I haven't gotten Song XX yet, may have to, but the original disc the sax sample was way up front which is something that never really bothered me. FWIW, he uses a sax sample on "The Roots of Coincedence" from "Imaginary Day" however it was coming from a different synth device as he stopped using the Synclav panel in his guitar, same guitar however.
  17. I used to have one of these sets as a kid on the Kory records label, Bags Groove was on one side. Anyway, I saw this "Best of More Jam Sessions and the Jimmy Smith Jazz Set" Volume 2 at Amazon and it piqued my curiosity since I just d/l a killer JOS jam from Germany in '72. Is this Newport '72 CD worth getting at all?

back to Bob. I always liked his "Rocksteady" arrangement on "CTI Summer Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl" and his playing on Stanley Turrentine's "Cherry" is unobtrusive.
  19. Soulstream you are right about they don't make Donald Bailey style drummers anymore. Many drummers I hear with organ try to play as if its a piano and that doesn't work necessarily
  20. up for air. I think Donald gave Jimmy *exactly* what he needed at this point, a very rhythmically responsive style to Jimmy's playing. Donald had figured out a way in a modern jazz context how to make bop style drumming really work with an organ, and Duck's synthesis of Max Roach, Philly Joe and Art Blakey was something he made his own thing. The closest drummer I've heard to getting near Bailey's level of activity with an organist is Byron Landham with Joey D.
  21. I love that House Party t-shirt! gotta get it sometime.

I found Stanley Turrentine's "More than a Mood" at Coconuts used in my area, but other than that I haven't found much exciting OOP stuff.
  23. yes Roy looks amazing at 80 and he plays amazing at that age too.
  24. yes, those three tracks were available on the Mosaic. Please BN reissue At the Club Baby Grand as a RVG and I'll be happy.
  25. I really enjoy that Forrest/Grey version of the band, and along with Eric Dixon, a 1-2 punch on tenor.
