  1. You can trace back common Plutonian ancestry.
  2. They are linked through Chicago. Sun Ra essentially launched avant garde jazz in Chicago, and the AACM picked up the Arkestra's baton.
  3. Technically, Russian has only 3 tenses. But I imagine that you are implicitly counting the the different uses of verbal aspect as tenses.
  4. Maren: That makes quite logical sense, especially considering what Brownie has added. I never thought of that before! In Russian, there are three different leters for "sh", "shch", and "ch." Shostakovich begins with "sh." Tchaikovsky begins with "ch," Saltykov-Shchedrin uses a "shch."
  5. Shostakovich (or Chostakovich) makes more sense than Tchaikovsky. Where did the "T" come from? There is no T (sound or letter) in the Russian word. It must have come from the same transliterator who transliterated Chekhov as Tchekhoff.
  6. I Never Inhaled (And Neither Did She)!
  7. That appears to be a correct identification of the music. But it was actually recorded in Birdland in February, 1962. The European Tours box gives incorrect information.
  8. I have a strong preference for this one too.
  9. Don't forget the "Ancestral Song" by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. That is one of their best (IMO).
  10. I am in, of course! Thank you, Volkher.
  11. A related point: One interesting message of Ted Gioia's excellent book West Coast Jazz is, ironically, how influential Count Basie was on the so-called "cool jazz" artists in L.A. in the 1950s. Intuitively, one would think that Ellington would be the greater influence. But Gioia's book gives the opposite impression.
  12. What would jazz be without Count Basie? Thank you for this thread, Milan. 100 years! We HAVE to celebrate. We have to do something.
  13. When I click into Organissimo and see this thread on the top, my heart drops. I wish Elvin the very best for the time that he still has left with us.
  14. Not long ago, this place had a reasonably good stock of used Masters of Jazz CDs at about 10 Euros a pop. I don't know what is left. http://www.parisjazzcorner.com/ There is another place right on Place St. Michel in Paris that was selling Masters of Jazz CDs dirt cheap a few years ago. Brownie must know the place.
  15. I think that you guys just need to hear it one more time before it really clicks.
  16. I don't know that particular neighborhood. It is true that there are some relatively nice neighborhoods around there. In general, some of SE Washington can be dangerous.
  17. What do I think? I think that Coleman and Bley at the Hillcrest is the shit. I wish that Paul Bley could somehow make available the rest of the tapes.
  18. Could that be the bottle that did him in?
  19. Thanks for the information, LAL and EKE. I sure don't remember an obituary for Emmett Berry. RIP
  20. 15th and Massachusetts might be the ticket. That is right in the heart of DC. Most buildings around there are in good condition. But you never know until you actually see the apartment, of course! I live on the border of Silver Spring, which is a rather large and diverse city next to Washington. Do you have a more concrete address? In any case, Silver Spring would not give you the same benefits as downtown DC, and would require at least a 30-40 commute to the LC. John
  21. For a while, I believed that they used a very liberal Italian copyright law that placed almost everything over 15 years old in the public domain. That law has now been replaced (I believe) with the EU condition of 50 years.
  22. By chance, is Emmett Berry still alive?
