  1. And what was Iowa's motto, when it was an independent country? I hope you're not suggesting that the EMINENT CHUCK NESSA, poster of this board, is lying about his location in his control panel MG MG, One thing to keep in mind, and I say this all with respect and affection for you--from your desk in Wales, while Western Michigan may look like it is close to Chicago on a map, it is several hours away by car, and a million miles away in character. In fact, Chicago is like another dimension, a huge cosmopolitan city surrounded by a different universe, small town America. A very short distance outside of Chicago, and you wouldn't know that you weren't in the middle of an endless farm.

  3. But any trumpet player who shares a birthday with Mr. A cannot join in!
  4. Ronnie Matthews--Roots Branches and Dances, on Bee Hive, late 1970s. With Frank Foster, Ray Drummond, Al Foster, Azzedin Weston. Am I correct that none of the Bee Hive releases have made it to CD?

  6. Happy Birthday Chris! I have been enjoying your work since 1970, when I started reading your Stereo Review record reviews. They really made an positive impact on me in my impressionable youth, and did a lot to deepen my interest in music. I hope that you have a great birthday!

  8. I have found that Don Carter's "Heaven's All Star Jazz Band" really appeals to children. It is a story about how a much beloved deceased grandfather must be hanging out in heaven with his jazz favorites.
  9. In my opinion, Brilliant Corners is the next choice.

    Sonny Fortune

Yes, it is excellent and very appealing to listen to.
  11. Agreed. Although the inclusion of Stevie Wonder's I Just Called To Say I Love You was a bit of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. I never realized Bix did a trumpet solo on that one. The only stereo track in the set. Except for the version of the Captain and Tennile's "Love Will Keep Us Together", with the solos by Henry "Red" Allen and Chu Berry. They take the song to another level entirely!

  13. Brubeck claims that Desmond had a fragment and didn't know what to do with it, and that he, Brubeck, had a huge hand in writing the song.
  14. I love Duke's "In a Mellow Tone", but it seems to attract mediocre performances like moths to a street light. When the members of a lackluster group, which has exhibited its ability to play mainstream stuff in a very ordinary way, suddenly start beaming with delight as the leader announces, "now we will play 'In a Mellow Tone' by the immortal Duke Ellington!", I want to head for the exits.

    Sonny Fortune

Those are his best albums ever, in my opinion. Awakening has the most erotic cover I have ever seen. I saw Sonny a few years ago in a quintet with alto saxophonist Frank Morgan, a two alto group. Morgan was tasteful and appealing. Sonny blew the roof off of the hall, taking it to many levels above the rest of the performance.

  17. I'm with FFA...in the sense that it's not the tune...it's who's playing it. Sure we all have our favorites, ect. Mine seem to change over time. That's the great thing about music. One thing I know for sure is, that my favorite players...I like every tune they play on. I stayed away from this thread because I didn't like the concept. I just checked it out for the hell of it and Soul Stream and FFA have it exactly right. i hoped that more jazz standards would be noted, and not just pop standards One thing that's notable in the thread is that, not only are people not mentioning too many jazz standards, but zero Soul Jazz standards have been mentioned. I am really surprised people haven't been down on "Way back home", "Freedom jazz dance", "Cold duck time", "Sister Sadie", "Chitlins con carne", "Dat dere", "Mercy, mercy, mercy", "Comin' home baby" etc etc. I wonder if that's because people really like them or if they just don't care. MG I, for one, like them, and don't think that they have been overplayed.

    Red Norvo

I saw Red Norvo live in the fall of 1982, with Tal Farlow. They played extremely well. It was a memorable concert. Does anyone know how much longer Red performed in public?
  19. I don't suppose that anyone would have the courage to mention Scott Yanow's book on this subject. I know that I don't!
  20. I have read about the latest NEA Jazz Masters awards, and have read the list of those previously honored. My question is, what do leading jazz musicians think of this award? When they are honored, do they feel a warm rush of joy, a feeling that they have been truly recognized at long last, that now their entire life's work was really worth it? When they are not among the list of those honored, do they feel depressed, go out and get drunk to get over the bitter disappointment of it all? Do they see the entire program as one more bit of silly nonsense (which happens to come with a check to the winners?)
