I'm in, of course! I have loved all of your BFTs so far!
-
I absolutely love #1. It's "Mean to Me", correct? It almost sounds like a revival of a great old band, like the Benny Goodman big band reunion sides of the 1950s, or a studio all-star band put together to record swing era favorites in the 1950s. Whatever the origins of the band, it is a rousing, infectious performance, with spirited solos. I am so glad that you shared this with us.

BFT 140 - Discussion of The Freedom Principle
Hot Ptah replied to jeffcrom's topic in Blindfold Test
Is that Kenny Wheeler on trumpet on Freedom 4? I was just listening to an ECM album that he plays on, and I hear a similarity. -
Is Straight 3 a David Holland track? Is that Vic Juris on guitar on Straight 4?

I enjoyed listening to this BFT a great deal. No wonder I could not identify some of them. I do not know much about Japanese jazz musicians. Thank you for opening that door for me!

2015 MLB Season - Let's Play Two!
Hot Ptah replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Lack of soda and perhaps too much candy corn has obviously turned your brain into mush. That's right, the Royals will win in four games, not six. If that happens (and look, I'm not even about to say that it's unlikely yet unless/until Royals go up either 3-0 or 3-1), I would say that two great teams met and played a great World Series. One won four games, the other didn't. I mean, I see greatness everyday in real life, sometimes in flashes, sometimes in ongoing behavior. It gets devalued on the human level because there's no bigmoneydick around to either use it or abuse it or sell it. It's just people doing a thing as well as it can be done because A) they've got the skill, and B) they've got the self-motivation to do it that way. Turn that into "no, that's not really special, anybody could and should do that, that's a replaceable quantity", well...no it's not. human history pretty much indicates that it's not, and all the Bold New World Reshapiers Of Destiny ain't gonna make it so, tyr as they so energetically try. Baseball being the "everyday" sport that it is, I think it's fair to say that the Royals have a great team right now, and that the Mets have a great rotation right now. Cumulative performance speaks to that far better than does the "what have you done for me lately" thing. Again, that's too Wall Street-y for me...how many great companies have been run into the ground by the pursuit of GREAT RIGHT NOW? Also, remember - great and greatest are not the same thing. That's a whole 'nother game, but in order to be the greatest, do you not first have to be great? I'll tell you what word gets tossed around too casually in general conversation, not sports, just in general. "Genius" as noun. There are far more moments of genius than there are actual geniuses. Maybe we could make "great" a verb, to cover it being an act as well as an ultimate condition. "Hey those Buffalo Bills really greated those four years, Too bad they couldn't great the Super Bowls even once". It's your language, use it or lose it! I've been watching baseball for 51 years, and have seen a lot of Royals games the past two years. The Royals are a great team. There is no need to analyze the meaning of the word great. By any definition, the Royals are a great team. -
Here is an example of why I do not post in the Classical Discussion forum. When I have attended concerts by Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble, and when I have listened to their CDs, I have found them to be quite satisfying. I have found their interpretations to be interesting and moving. But that is because I am an unsophisticated boor when it comes to classical music. I am the equivalent of the guy who says with regard to jazz, "oh, that Ronnie Laws is one fine saxophone player, I really like his playing, he must be considered one of the greats." So my lack of worthiness to post here is once again confirmed for me. To me the most interesting posts on the classical threads (and others) are those where listeners have been excited by music they've heard and want to communicate that enthusiasm (regardless of how much experience they have of the music). The least interesting are those where we are told which performers or composers we are supposed to 'appreciate' and which ones we are required to scorn. Post your enthusiasms, Hot Ptah. I appreciate that Bev, but I find I do not enjoy having my head torn off by the circle of experts. I get too much of that in my real business life. I come here to relax from contentious discussion in my real life career.

I think that this is a good idea. I will listen to all of them. The four of them taken together will be about as long as one Blindfold Test by everyone else.

New Releases/October/Constant Sorrow
Hot Ptah replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I am really looking forward to hearing all of these albums. Is anyone releasing more interesting albums in jazz today? -
I am still listening to the remaining tracks.

I think that Track 2 is the title cut from this: I think that Track 3 is "Five Four Three" from this Lee Konitz album: I think that Track 11 is "En El Campo" from this: I know that #13 is Sun Ra's "New Horizons", from more than one early album. I love early Sun Ra! Thanks for including it. I think that Track 15 is "Burungkaka Tua" from this: Rivers confounds me. There are many times when I love him and in general I think extremely highly of him. There are other times where his work just falls flat with me. I've read where others have complained about engineers inability to capture his sound effectively and wonder if that is part of the issue. I would not have guessed this was him. There is a lovely track on that album featuring Rivers on flute. I have not heard the album in a long time and would have to go back and listen again to identify which track it is.

Mosaic's forthcoming James P. Johnson set
Hot Ptah replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This will be an essential purchase for me. James P. Johnson is one of my very favorite musical artists. I am so glad that this is being released! -
I love this Blindfold Test. I do not have anything to add beyond the amazing guesses and commentary that are already here. I have been enjoying this BFT all month. It is really fun.

I saw Brubeck live several times in the 1990s and 2000s, and was impressed with his lyricism, and at times, his lightly swinging touch. As others have noted here, his playing had more variety than he is often given credit for.
