  1. I purchased the Basie and Gerald Wilson sets on Friday, they should arrive Tuesday. I carefully checked my bank account on Sunday night, the last day for free shipping, and found I could squeeze in the Oliver Nelson set. Not a bad haul...
  2. This set was reviewed in Jazz Times this month. They must have put out promo copies, unless they only gave the reviewer bits and pieces... http://jazztimes.com/reviews/cd_reviews/de...mp;issue=200710
  3. You Sir have good taste, and have prompted me to dig that monster out myself. Thanks, Yes, it's quite a project, but somebody has to do it. I love the clarinet playing on Anthropology. I have the Village Vanguard box too, I might wait a week before I jump into that.
  4. Yes, it is. I probably would have made a few purchases over a longer period of time and gotten whacked for shipping each time. I'm going to make a larger purchase (this was their plan anyway) and save shipping on what would have been two or three purchases. I am not interested in their entire output, but I have been satisfied with what I have bought from them, so far.
  5. I agree that Mosaics are not cheap, but I do find them a good value. You get what you pay for, that is, if you actually want the product. I have only noticed about 3 "sales" from Mosaic in the 15 or more years I have been aware of them and the amount was only about 10%, not much of a sale but it is better than nothing. I have specific tastes, I am not interested in everything they sell, but I have been very happy with the purchases I have made. I should have subtitled this thread "If you hate Mosaic and/or Mr. Cuscuna, you can ignore this." I do find the many responses fascinating, though. Has anyone actually made a purchase? I mostly listen to small group jazz, but lately I have been listing to larger groups. I am thinking of picking up the Gerald Wilson and Oliver Nelson sets. I was planning and going all out and getting the Basie set too, but I had a small emergency that took up a chunk of my budget.
  6. I am a bit surprised at some of the responses, I was just passing on some info I saw on the website while browsing. I think I will purchase a few sets I have been holding off from buying, and save 20 or 30 bucks.
  7. Over $100 purchases, inside the U.S., until Sept. 30th. Internationational shipping reduced by 50%. See the website. Time to buy...
  8. Thanks, I only have one of those, I mostly have the Blue Notes.
  9. Can anyone tell me which albums the material is from in the Dexter Gordon Prestige box? Thanks
  10. For listening pleasure, what makes me happy? It is difficult to choose one, so here are my top 3: The Ike Quebec Blue Note 45 recordings, which I bought from Mosaic in 1992, but are now available everywhere from Blue Note. Also, The 1960's Jazz Messengers...great stuff, and finally, the Turrentine set.
  11. I have Sixteen plus a few selects. There are about 5 more sets on my "want list". Hey, I have a birthday coming up...
  12. There are a bunch on my want list, but Chu Berry may bypass them all.
  13. Serge Chaloff. I do not pull him out too often, but when I do, I remember how good he was..
  14. I saw a Kenny Garrett a few years ago in Chicago at the now temporarily (we hope) closed Jazz Showcase. It was rather intense. There were a few occasions when he band stopped playing, and he and the drummer did a duo performance. Garrett would turn around and play his alto into the drumset, while the drummer did an Elvin Jones style barrage of snare and tom toms, as an accompaniment. Garrett played alto, soprano, and a tiny curved sopranino horn. After the set I had a chance to chat with him. The showcase is a small 200 seat club, and the performers usually mingle with the audience between sets. (one of the reasons we're still hoping it re-opens) I mentioned that his performance was different from the usual Showcase fare of old guys playing standards (I do enjoy listening to old guys playing standards) He commented that he is "creating new standards."
  15. I saw my first Jazz Showcase shows as a teenager at The Blackstone Hotel, starting with Art Blakey when Branford Marsalis was still with the band. I saw Blakey's bands 5 more times over a few years. Who else have I seen there? Max Roach, Milt Jackson, The Heath Brothers, The Harper Brothers, Tony Williams, Donald Harrison, Kenny Garrett, Lee Konitz, Roy Haynes, Lou Donaldson, Jack DeJohnette, Lockjaw Davis and Johnny Griffin together, Sonny Fortune, Scott Hamilton, John Scofield, James Moody, Dave Holland in the 1980's doing avant garde, and with his current quintet, Roy Hargrove, Joe Pass with Nils Henning Orsted Pederson, Hank Crawford, Frank Morgan, A new years show with Pepper Adams, Kenney Burrell and Wilbur Campbell. I'm sure I've forgotten to include a bunch. Most of these performers were seen from the front row, sipping a Guiness with my foot resting against the stage, sitting about six feet from the musicians. We've been lucky to have The Showcase. I hope it will re-open...
  16. The Lester Young Proper box this morning. Now I have moved on to the Crusaders. I do have the Art Pepper Village Vanguard and Fantasy boxes. Maybe they'll be tomorrows marathon.
  17. Not many people would admit this...The very first multi-record set I ever purchased? Kiss' re-release of their first three albums as a set around '76. I was 13 and just got a set of drums. (Those were the "Metal" years.) By the time I was 17 I was into Mile's, Sonny, and Coltrane, and anybody with a good drummer. The first Mosaic: The Jazz Messengers and Ike Quebec sets purchased at the same time in the early 90's.
  18. I have a ton of Lou, but not many albums in the Mosaic set. I'm waiting til it runs low, then I'll have to buy it...
  19. The Blakey set was my favorite, followed by the Ike Quebec 45's box (now entirely available outside Mosaic.) Turrentine, Crusaders, Mobley and Stitt are among my favorites, although when i listen to a set I haven't heard in a while: Serge Chaloff, Chico Hamilton, Illinois Jacquet, I still say to myself "damn, why haven't I listened to this in a while?"
  20. Serge Chaloff...I haven't listened to him for a while, I'll have to throw it on the cd turntable more often...
