Age Discrimination: Old Like Me
danasgoodstuff replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Most of my younger library co-workers just give me blank looks when I kpoint out that the reason that the Dem's used to do better in National elections was that they used to own the south... (Lyndon Johson knew he was cutting his own party's throat when when he pushed the voting rights act through Congress, with a lot of Republican help, and took a perverse pride in doing it anyway). 1066 I knew immediately, but not some of the others. How about 1745 or 1885? -
How long ago do Pat Boone do his In a Metal Mood? At least that was funny...

I drive a '59 Studebaker Lark with an automactic tranny, V-8 with a newly installed 4 barrel that needs some tuning so my mileage is nothing to write home about. But my wife drives a Mazda Protege which is what we take on trips and our child care arrangements allow me to catch a ride to and from work sometimes. If the long-promised library branch near my home ever gets built, I'll transfer, walk to work and save the Studebaker for fun. I understand the appeal of cars like my Studebaker (which gets good mpg compared to, say, a Packard, a supercharded Stude or a Hummer) but it's not 1959 anymore and maybe it never really was...

My wife won us a trip to the Newport jazz fest (I think she thought they meant Newport, OR but it's RI) this weekend. Airfare, tickets to the fest and Hotel included, ground transport, food, etc. not (so with tax on the whole thing it;s gonna be expensive in the end). If anyone is familar with Newport and can offer any advice on getting to and from theairport, venue, places to eat, etc. I'd appreciate it. Thanks muchly.

The contents of the long-awaited (by some...) box set of The Band have been posted on the net at http://theband.hiof.no/albums/a_musical_history.html Looks good, with lots of rareties of various sorts, as well as big chunks of the essential regular stuff spread over 5 CDs and 1 DVD, including stuff with Ronnie Hawkins, Dylan and early singles on their own. Robertson was heavily involved, Hudson less so, Helm not...

STAX/VOLT - The Complete Soul Singles 1968-71
danasgoodstuff replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It was the Bar-Kays, not the Mar-Keys, who died with Otis. http://www.sl-prokeys.com/stax/stax-mclemore.htm is an interesting web site by a later session player at Stax, Sandy Kay as he was then known, who just hopped on a plane in May '69, showed up on McLenore Ave. and talked his way into a job playing keyboards! (he did notice that they kept his tracks well isolated at first...) I bought the first Stax box for roughly $60 when it was new, maybe the best money I ever spent. My fav's are the obscure things like "Yank Me Doodle" by a bunch of guys Packy Axton met at the bar that night... -
Not a big fan of Swallow generally but I liked his work on the BN Sco/Friz thing. Gimme Duck Dunn or Tommy Cogbill any day; in fact I could name 'bout a dozen R&B players I'd take over jazz guys on electric...

AOTW May 29-June 6: Weather Report, Mr. Gone
danasgoodstuff replied to Guy Berger's topic in Album Of The Week
I too remember that db review and Joe Z's (over) response to it. If I remember correctly, they gave it one star out of five; I thought it was 'bout twice that good! Seriously, it was the first, but sadly not the last, Weather Report album to disappoint me. -
I've liked this ever since vinyl days, even though I had a shittly Liberty pressing. KD & JH had a thing going on and Tony Williams is a mean cowbellist.

I think Pepper and Byrd are v. good together and this is my fav of the albums they did for BN. Like seemingly everone else here I sep'ly like "Jeannine".

Rooster's BFT#25 -- official "check-in" thread...
danasgoodstuff replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
Got mine about a week ago but they won't play in the two players I've tried so far, oh well... -
Is it too late for me to contribute $?

I was just checking the credits to the BB King, King of the Blues box and noticed that Fred jackson, Jr. is listed as playing on the King Size album in 1976 and Donald Wilkerson on the Blues N Jazz album in 1982. Would those be the most recent sightings for these two (both of whom I dig)?

School board bans performance of "Louie Louie"
danasgoodstuff replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
School board has no more business banning Louie for its supposed musical short-comings than it does for its imagined lyrics. Micro-managing the marching band simply isn't their job. And since when can you determine a piece of muic's value by simply counting the notes, chords, whatever? For what it's worth, I drove Richard Berry around Portland one day when he was playing here, nice guy, dug "Impressions". "Louie Louie, me gotta go" -
Crouch on Rollins
danasgoodstuff replied to Chrome's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Good quote Larry, but I don't think Sonny's prob is even unique to jazz; I think Clapton and Beck have spent most of their careers either trying to solve or to ignore this riddle. Clapton recently squared his circle at the Albert Hall, maybe Rollins will too, but who's left for him to do that with? And on a related note does anyone else think rollins may have avoided playing with Lee Morgain cause he was too close to Clifford, or am I just projecting? -
I'd be particularly interested to here some stuffs from outside the acknowledged classic period just to see if that perception was based just on what he chose to issue... And I agree that non-geniuses can do genius-level work, Big Pink & The Band anyone?

Crouch on Rollins
danasgoodstuff replied to Chrome's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I, too, used to fantasize that Mr. Rollins would one day make the album I really wanted him to. Then I grew up... Sonny does what he wants; dig it or not. -
And, if I'm not mistaken (since I don't have a discography in front of me), there's an outtake that hasn't been on any reissue, or am I thinking of another great LD date. Guess I'd better go check...
