I got my last two international shipments out today, wouldbe recipients in France and the UK should contact Brownie and Tooter. I have the domestics all made, addressed and ready to go to the post office tomorrow. I sent Brownie's copy the same day as Tooter & Mike's, so hopefully it will be there soon. Looking forward to getting underway...

saw/heard the original 4 play sans pa in an acoustically suberb lecture hall at the University of Portland; that was sweet. Interviewed hemphill once; at least I tried to, he didn't want to talk about leaving the WSQ or losing his leg so I was stumped (sic, v. sic but I couldn't help myself). I'm not sure why they keep recording, other than someone being willing to pay them and work's work...

Shrdlu Sorry I missed your Q re C-melodys earlier! Yes, no one makes them any more, most of what you see were made in the twenties, some later. I actually own two, a Conn and a King. Other than somewhat old fashioned keywork (the Conn more so), they play pretty much like comparable tenors and altos. Finding a comfortable playing posture can be an issue depending on how big you are and how you like to hold your horn. Vintage mouth pieces tend toi be rather 'stuffy' and modern tenor or alto mouthpieces can present intonation probs, fortunately you can buy modern C mouthpieces that use tenor reeds. i need to check these out and/or look for a Selmer short shank tenor mp to trade my honking huge Berg Larson for... Oh, and I still love Bix and Tram.

i may have said this before, but I STILL think that Blue Mitchel was da man for blending trumpet with organ, other guys like Lee M played well on organ dates but to me Blue really had the sound for it... I really like Lou's Alligator Boogaloo and after stuffs but they do get a little samey if you listen to 'em all in a row...

My wife is going into labor

All the best to you and your wife... -
aric, aric, aric Curtis is a great singer, back in the day he pretty much out sang young Bob on a nightly basis... Best local club gig (any genre) I ever saw was Robt Cray w/ Curtis on a dbl bill with Paul DeLay w/ jim Mesi, i.e. the two best singers in town supported by the best harp oplayer and the best guitar. U REALLY SHOULDN'T CAVALIERLY DECLARE THAT SOMEONE SUCKS WHEN YOU'VE JUST SEEN THEM ONCE AND PROBABLY WEREN'T EVEN PAYING ATTENTION IF THEIR WERE ANY HOT CHICKS NEARBY! Dana, 30+ years in Portland

Regarding Jimmie Dorsey, good enuff for Prez, Bird and Little Walter to dig, good enuff for me. Those that dis him musta been talking to Tommy...

Robt Plant's oldies side-project EP, The Honey Drippers was about 17 min. and lots of C&W LPs were under 30 including some plum brilliant ones by Willie in the '80s. It's not how long, it's how good, least that's what I always say...

Ive got: duets w/ Gato B duets w/ Archie S duets w/ Buddy T (!) (yes I used to have a sax & piano duets fixation) Water From an Ancient Well and some early trio record the title of which I can't remember I think I should get some more...

As i believe I've mentioned previously, I love trib albums: when the're done well they tell you some things new about both ends. i love Monk playing Ellington, WSQ and Clarinet Summit playing Ellington, Blythe Playing Monk, That's the Way I Feel Now (VA play Monk), Lefty plays Jimmie Rodgers, etc. But the most important thing to remember 'bout Monk playing Ellington is that it worked, i.e. it helped Monk actually make a living from playing music and helped Riverside get back the $ they'd invested when everyone else (Prestige & Blue Note) had given up on him as even marginally commercially viable. If the much cursed Orin deserves any credit for this, them bless him!

best selling non-vocal all-acoustic jazz albums
danasgoodstuff replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Probably Kind of Blue, just like now. If you discount reissues, maybe one of Dexter's on Columbia or something on CTI if that's 'real jazz' enough for you... -
The Spousal Unit needed the computer last night, but barring any unforseens the rest should be done and on their way by tomorrow...

RW's On Broadway is a fine slab o' grease....just wanted to make sure that didn't get lost in all this fun trivia mongering.

Had a busy weekend what with my 3 year old's bd party and all, but I still hope to get BFT 22 mailed to domestic recipients tomorrow.
-
Yes, in a sense they are, but do you really expect any such institution to say 'no, we're sorry, but we've covered all the really heavy guys and we're full now"?

Don't know the Mocking Shadows. The only band from Calgary I've heard is the 49th Parallel whose most excellent 45 "Labourer" I have around here someplace. I could ask my brother in Saskatoon if he's heard the MSs... By the way Cooltrane, if you haven't figured it out yet it's "Maceo Parker" and ther is something inherently funny 'bout the idea of a Canadian funk band, although no more so than say AWB who were Scots (but they were in on the joke, hence their name). Maybe they should cover Hank M's "Funk In Deep Freeze".

couw Thanks, I'll give it a try but some are already made so the're going out the way they are, unless they can be 'fixed' somehow? Dana, luddite extermist

Hi everyone: Haven't had time to respond individually to all the PMs but the BFT signup is open through this weekend, at least. I will try to get things mailed next week so we can get started with the fun soon after. Thank you all for your interest. This BFT is a sort of thankyou/tribute/apology (for all my crankiness) to the Organissimo BB community. All the selections are connected, in one way or another, to threads here and all of them connect one to the next. FINALLY, DON'T PLAY IT ON YOUR COMPUTER WITH REAL PLAYER UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWERS! (there must be a way to disable that but don't ask me...) Dana

Jimi Hendrix Has Best 'Guitar Face'
danasgoodstuff replied to 7/4's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I thought the Alvin Lee quote was "looking like he was being jerked off with steel wool". If he was having "his genitals extracted with a chain saw" I suspect his face might go rather blank...unless, of course, he was into that sort of thing. Horn players have a hard time doing this sort of thing, except He Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned... -
OK, BFT #22 went out to the European sigups Tooter, Brownie and Mikeweil yesterday. They have kindly agreed to distribute to others in their respective areas. I think if I can get the rest out next week that should put everyone on an equal footing, n'est pa? So who else wants one?
-
Mike, Thank you, please PM me your adress. Dana

OK let's link this as the signup since I've done a test copy and it's fine. The vol. does go up and down a bit, my software allows me to corect for that but I'm not sure how or how well it works. Any thoughts, anyone? Also, any volunteers for 'treeing' it overseas?

A great musician and an allround smart, interesting and original guy. Opinionated, sure, but one of the few who could really back it up. it's stunning that someone that good could put his horn down and not pick it back up for 60 years...

Larry Kart's jazz book
danasgoodstuff replied to Larry Kart's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
My prob with N&T was that Taylor asked so many blantantly leading Q's in an effort to get his subjects to say anti-rock things, making me wonder how "uninhibited" the rest of it was... -
Al, Done, thanks. Just got my BFT #21 today, thanks again. Dana
