  1. for those of you in the Portland, OR area there will be a record show at the Elks club at SE 50th & Hawthorne this Sat night, 5-9pm. I'll have two tables: 1 of my mixed stuff and 1 of my late brother-in-law's mostly rock LPs & CDs. Also selling a C-melody sax, tenor mouthpiece and assorted other stuff. Thanx.
  2. Last Date and Live at the Lighthouse make clear how much of a crying shame it is that Lee died when and how he did...but on the other hand if it's really true that BN was planning to pair him with the Mizell bros., well i won't say it's just as well but I really dislike their stuff and not because I don't like funk/groove (as those of you who got my blindfold test well know) but precisely because I do dig natural funk/groove..to me there's nothing more grotesque than fake funk. End of rant. Back on topic, Last Sessions? Hell yeah!
  3. Went, had a nice time listening to the Reptet and talking to fellow board members. They gots cute young ladies in the band and the ladies and the guys all play good too! Thanks Johnny. I'll post more when I get a chance to listen to the CD, if you get a chance to see 'em by all means go...
  4. Certainly not Ayler's best, but I'll probably pick it up to satisfy my completist urges...I do kinda like the version of ghosts since itshows just how differently this great tune could be done.
  5. sure, 43 v. 71 is part of it but not all... it's also the material, the relative solo space alotted, and a mostly 'on' performance v. a really 'on' one... Hopefully, this one will do well enough that we'll get more from collecter dude's stash so we each can have the live Rollins gig of our dreams... "Last of the Mohicans" - funny and true, in so many ways.
  6. Gatemouth Brown died a couiple of days ago, saw in the paper and confirmed with Google. He survived Katrina but was forced to evacuate his home outside New Orleans. I didn't own a lot of his records or ever see him live but I always enjoyed his eclectic/catholic/? approach to a broad range of American Vernacular Music, for lack of a better term.
  7. Used my Borders 30% off coupon to get this and while I'm glad I did it's not all that...pretty typical late Rollins, enjoayable and more in places but not nearly as strong as, say, Live In Japan from the mid-70s (an import only, still I think) which has more energy, more better Rollins more of the time and better sound. I haven;'t heard the Ronny Scotts albums yet, I sold my Live in Denmark, hearing Sonny play anything for 40+ minutes was too much of a good thing for me...
  8. Will try to make the 9/24 show...
  9. It's da bomb!
  10. This thread prompted me to relisten to Spirits/Witches & Devils; great record, great playing from all concerned including Norman Howard. Would be v. interested in hearing more from him. Would also like to see S/W&D reissued with the spirituals and other material recorded the same day (w/out Howard) for a fuller picture of one of Ayler's best days in the studio.
  11. Filled both vehicles (Studebaker & Mazda) for $2.63/gal recently, but saw a lot of $2.89 & 2.99 per gal of reg on the way to the beautiful Oregon coast yesterday. The trip cost about $20 in gas but was well worth it. Guess I should be glad I don't have that R#-engined Avanti I want, loosey milage and premium, but I'd make it all back racing suckers who don't know how fast a Stude can be...
  12. sidewinder: Thanx, that's about what I figured. I have this on CD too so I guess I'll have to sell one or the other at the next Night Owl record sale here in puddletown, Oct 8th.
  13. I just got an LP copy of Miles Dark Magus, dutch pressing v. nice shape (haven't played yet). Don't think this was ever on vinyl domestically, how rare?
  14. Recently acquired LP of Jack McDuff, On Wth It! V. greasy with Joe Dukes, Harold Vick & Eddie Deihl. Not on CD? Recorde in '61 not issued til a decade later.
  15. Lowriders with the back corner up always look like a dog pissing on a hydrant to me, esp'ly if the're next to a hydrant...
  16. Impossible: Thanks, but acvtually we were thinking of not renting a car and taking taxis or whatever - is $20/person from the airport to downtown reasonable? Dana
  17. Most of my younger library co-workers just give me blank looks when I kpoint out that the reason that the Dem's used to do better in National elections was that they used to own the south... (Lyndon Johson knew he was cutting his own party's throat when when he pushed the voting rights act through Congress, with a lot of Republican help, and took a perverse pride in doing it anyway). 1066 I knew immediately, but not some of the others. How about 1745 or 1885?
  18. How long ago do Pat Boone do his In a Metal Mood? At least that was funny...
  19. I drive a '59 Studebaker Lark with an automactic tranny, V-8 with a newly installed 4 barrel that needs some tuning so my mileage is nothing to write home about. But my wife drives a Mazda Protege which is what we take on trips and our child care arrangements allow me to catch a ride to and from work sometimes. If the long-promised library branch near my home ever gets built, I'll transfer, walk to work and save the Studebaker for fun. I understand the appeal of cars like my Studebaker (which gets good mpg compared to, say, a Packard, a supercharded Stude or a Hummer) but it's not 1959 anymore and maybe it never really was...
  20. My wife and I are going, see seperate thread...
  21. My wife won us a trip to the Newport jazz fest (I think she thought they meant Newport, OR but it's RI) this weekend. Airfare, tickets to the fest and Hotel included, ground transport, food, etc. not (so with tax on the whole thing it;s gonna be expensive in the end). If anyone is familar with Newport and can offer any advice on getting to and from theairport, venue, places to eat, etc. I'd appreciate it. Thanks muchly.
  22. I hope he comes back so I can ask him for some Narvel Felts reccomendations...
  23. The contents of the long-awaited (by some...) box set of The Band have been posted on the net at http://theband.hiof.no/albums/a_musical_history.html Looks good, with lots of rareties of various sorts, as well as big chunks of the essential regular stuff spread over 5 CDs and 1 DVD, including stuff with Ronnie Hawkins, Dylan and early singles on their own. Robertson was heavily involved, Hudson less so, Helm not...
  24. Next to singers, drummers may be the most subjective of tastes, so these are some of my PERSONAL FAVORITES: Papa Jo Jones Roy Haynes Elvin Jones Billy Higgins Tony Williams (up through Capt Marvels anyway) Joe Chambers Odie Payne, Jr. Fred Below Sam Lay Al Jackson, Jr. Clyde Stubblefield John Starks Mitch Mitchel Micky Waller Bill Stewart Kenny Barron
