  1. Good to see you back.
  2. You're being too kind to the truly clueless reviewing here. Wasn't it Tynan who referred to 'Trane and Dolphy at the Village Vanguard as 'anti-jazz'? And Williams thought that the tape splices he heard on In a Silent Way were simply editing mistakes, not intentional choices. They should've both been fired. Ernie plays the way Ernie plays, deal with it.
  3. For 'tear jerkers' I might suggest Gene Ammons, but tastes/perceptions have changed at least as much there as with groove tunes and it's harder to get a handle on the shift on the 'plays pretty for the people' side - dance stuff can be measured to an extent with the accents falling here and here instead of there and there, but...
  4. I've been seeing it too, off and on, but not at the moment. [[Template core/front/global/updateWarning is throwing an error. This theme may be out of date. Run the support tool in the AdminCP to restore the default theme.]] It's back!
  5. Assuming that the Adderly Brothers' Mercy Mercy Mercy is overplayed, how about their Work Song or Sack of Woe?
  6. I have a Professor Longhair album on a Wndham sub that I quite like. IIRC, Winston produced it and Gatemouth Brown is the guitar player.
  7. Not a subject that I'm well versed in, but I wonder about those who have played both sides of the fence dividing smooth form real jazz, are there any who did better work on the smooth side?
  8. IMHO Blue 'Trane is something special, I will most likely get the mono LP and the stereo + outtakes on CD. I currently own a Liberty era pressing that I've had for ages.
  9. I love EH, but no more than Frank Strozier, C Sharp, Sonny Red, or that other obscure alto player whose name I'm forgetting right now.
  10. Yes, and the Mean Greens version isn't an edit of the Electrifying version, although edits of the Electrifying version do exist. And there are live versions of varying length. And aren't some in different time signatures too, 5/4 versus 4/4, or am I imagining that?
  11. Made me laugh, hard. don't stop being you. On the other hand, I was damned glad that they finally fully corrected the record for Jim Thorpe.
  12. William Bell, new collection of early Stax singles on Ace, Soul of a Bell, and a leftovers collection from 30 years ago. He's not the superhuman that Otis was, but he's his own guy and darned good. New one on the resurrected Stax label is good too.
  13. Some were built open, some closed. There are some racers who have run at Bonneville at 200+ mph with the AC on, P3s & P4s didn't have any and reputedly don't make good street cars, although some have tried to use them that way.
  14. It helps that it's shot at exactly the right angle. Not just pretty, 1-2-3 at Daytona in '67 after the Fords broke. Many drivers did both this series and F1 back then, I think that's less common now.
  15. Who exactly is this for at this point?
  16. I've played in 'free' situations, and it's certainly no guarantee that something interesting is going to happen. It's not cutting edge anymore. And maybe nothing is and that's ok. There are lots of other options to explore, many of which are more novel at this point. But to me it remains an option that's there if you want it. As both a player and a listener I'm mostly interested in other things at the moment, FWIW.
  17. If we're doing Le Mans and other long-distance closed wheel sports cars now, this is what a proper race car looks like: For some reason I associate this car, a Ferrari P3/4 with the Miles Davis 2nd quintet which was its contemporary.
  18. Unnamed model with Chris Ammon's Ferrari, if this is what happens when you don't win any races what in the world happens when you do? Ammons drove for Ferrari in a particularly chaotic era for them and while he led races and set lap records, he rarely finished. Won long-distance for them and the Tasman series too.
  19. Bonus tracks not available elsewhere might get me to buy this, maybe.
  20. Despite my admiration for Lauda, I avoided seeing Rush since I have a bit of a thing about fires since my brother died in one. And I already knew the story and rarely go to films..
  21. I followed F1 and long-distance racing when I was young, had a subscription to Motor Sport since they had the best coverage IMHO. Niki Lauda, the face of courage, won two more world championships after having been given the last rites.
  22. Can't say I agree with this, the version of the Ellington Suite with Dolphy is exquisite.
  23. I've just listened to little snippets and it sounded fine to me.
  24. I'm certainly not buying this, I'l just be glad if they stay in business. I own very little Hubbard post-BN, so it is to me. But he is often better as a sideman. So is Joe Henderson, IMHO.
  25. I certainly don't need this, but if it keeps them in business then that's great.
