You're certainly not the only one that feels that way. Maybe the Byrds should've done like BS&T and kicked McGuinn out. I certainly prefer the early Byrds (and Springfield and Hollies with Nash) to CSN&Y or their splinters. And the Yardbirds over Led Zep and Temptations with David Ruffin and Atlantic era Stax over later and so on (there are late '60s/early '70s things I love, but my tastes tend to run earlier than the demographics would suggest, whether I heard it back in the day or not). I'm not the Gene Clark cultist some ate though - I own none of his solo stuff and what I've heard is only mildly interesting to me, FWIW.

It's recently occurred to me that in some sense Ron Miles' playing can be seen as an extension of Don Cherry's in that it's the very opposite of the cliched trumpet player as egotist type of playing, not that I don't dig that too sometimes. What say you?

The concept of this record could work well, I think FWIW, but it only just barely does. Sco with McShann works in its own weird way. As does his bad joke title Country For Old Men. He and Frisell works, he and Miles, he and Eddie Harris (Hand Jive), ScoLoHoJoMoFo not so much. IMHO, YMMV, and sometimes his guitar sound is part of the problem and sometimes it's part of the solution, always part of the mix.

I could attribute it to this or that, for instance what I see as a rather relentless forwarding of persona, but honestly I don't know for sure. Ultimately my problem to figure out or just let it be - can't be on everyone's wavelength. But do check out Promises and yes it does have the London Sympathy Orchestra on it. I'm less taken by it than I was at first - but hearing it at the record store while I work is no doubt not the ideal setting for full appreciation.

Notorious is a bit of a mess as is, and I'm not sure there's a fix. Byrds generally are overrated by their fandom but who isn't? Early on they had a distinctive and effective sound of their own, their overall career arc is an interesting variation on the changes that many went through. Still, I've never really loved them, but it's probably more me than them. And as much of a pain as Crosby no doubt could be, McGuinn puts me off even more.

This. Best working band of their time? Maybe, if there even is such a thing as best or time. And I love the one with Sco sitting in.

As much as you get under my skin, which is admittedly as much me as you, this I find to be an interesting take - How do you feel about the Sanders/Floating Point thing from last year?

I run hot 'n cold on Sco generally, but have no problem with him although there are other places I've liked him better. He's representing the '80s era when he played with Miles - that's the idea of the album, Joe Hen playing with guys from different eras of Miles Davis bands - so his tone is totally appropriate. And the OP is trolling out of season as far as I'm concerned.

He can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think medjuck was referring to Dexter's playing in the movie Round Midnight, not the tune of the same name. That his comment was related to the ongoing discussion of Dexter's playing deteriorating over time, not the compatibility of his style and Monk's tunes. I have the Galaxy box, so I tend to think of the live recordings of that band as all one thing. If I was making a jazz albums of the '80s list there would be some Pepper, but I'm not sure which I'd go with - maybe the duets with Cables.

Why this particular Art Pepper album, as opposed to any other he did in this period?

His playing is always at least competent, and often quite wonderful. I found Notes & Tones annoying.

Yes, I know, no vocals. But its lead off tune "Chitlins Con carne" did make it into the repertoire of 'real blues' groups like Jr, Wells' and Jimmy Dawkins'. And I've found many blues fans do enjoy stuff like this, and Jimmy Smith, etc. as well as Muddy Waters, et al. And some don't - but then not all blues fans like the same indisputably blues singers. And the very concept of 'blues singer' has been questioned by some too.
