  1. Announced on their website now
  2. Reportedly, there's a scheduled release date for early 2008.
  3. Just put this set on my wish list.
  4. Courtesy of a member of the duke-lym list, here is the track listing for this set:
  5. He's supposed to have acted as a sideman for Bird in a few gigs, while still on his teens. No recorded evidence, to my knowledge.
  6. From Birdland's website:
  7. This comes from somebody who got a review copy of this upcoming 8 CD set: -Some 1940 broadcasts -Fargo concert (2 CDs worth) -1943 Carnegie Hall concert (2 CDs worth) -and other tracks up to and including 1948. So 4 out of 8 discs are the Fargo and the 1943 Carnegie Hall concerts. Though reportedly they have done a very good remastering job, it's bit deceiving, isn't it?
  8. Some updates: -The Box will be available from Storyville's website on February 15th. -Prices: €66,98, £49,98, $79,98, DKK 499,00. + postage. -All the material has been issued before
  9. Best wishes, Agustín Pérez

  13. ... have ya the recent release - Mary Lou Williams Circle recordings (Progressive 7142)? Nope! It was in my first pre-selection, but I wanted to reduce my order to about 100 USD.... See the Harlem Stride Piano thread for some information on the Donald Lambert CD. As for the Hines discs, lately I am becoming a 'Fatha' sucker. His magnificent control over the whole keyboard, his unexpected runs... my God, what a player! Though not a stride piano player (in fact his typical approach is just the opposite -trumpet-like pianism vs orchestral pianism-), I've put him very near my pantheon of stride masters.
  14. Looks like Chris Albertson is not round here anymore, but he has brought very interesting memories re Donald Lambert at AAJ:
  15. Solo Art has just released a CD with the 1961 Circle recordings of stride pianist Donald Lambert. DONALD LAMBERT AND HIS HARLEM PIANO: GIANT STRIDE SoloArt (SACD 44) It's a straight reissue of the original LP, so no additional material (just 40 minutes of music, not 50 as it's claimed in the Jazzology website). There's more material from those 1961 sessions and from a previous one in 1950, which they have left out. Hopefully there will be a volume 2. Anyway, it's always a pleasure to see a CD release of the sadly underrecorded Donald Lambert.
  16. Just ordered from Jazzology: -Billy Butterfield With Dick Wellstood [JCD-174] | Qty: 1 -Earl Hines With Alex Welsh [JCD-348] | Qty: 1 -Donald Lambert And His Harlem Piano: Giant Stride. [sACD-44] | Qty: 1 -David Thomas Roberts: Complete Piano Works Of Scott Joplin, volume 1 [sACD-131] | Qty: 1 -Earl Hines - Four Jazz Giants [sACD-111/112 (D)] | Qty: 1 -Don Ewell - Live At The 100 Club Don Ewell - Solo Piano [sACD-89] | Qty: 1 -Ralph Sutton - Alligator Crawl [sACD-92] | Qty: 1 The Lambert is a new release with recordings whch had never been issued on CD.
  17. A bunch of discs from JazzLoft, $9.99 each, except the SteepleChase disc: Ran Blake Something to Live For (hatology) Jimmy Giuffre Emphasis & Flight 1961 (hatology) Lee Konitz/Martial Solal Star Eyes, Hamburg 1983 (hatology) Lee Konitz/Martial Solal Jazz... Juan (SteepleChase) Marc Copland Haunted Heart & Other Ballads (hatology) Steve Lacy We See (hatology)
  18. The answer was given in post # 136 above: Sorry, Mike, somehow I missed that post.
  19. Someone on another list has just mentioned he/she has heard the rumour that the Classics label has been sold. Could this be true? Any further information?
  20. The Diminuendo In Blue And Crescendo In Blue from Fairfield (1956) was issued on The Happening / Paul Gonsalves (Musica Jazz MJCD 1153). See my compilation of all the recorded versions of DiBaCiB issued on CD in our Ellington special at Tomajazz: http://www.tomajazz.com/perfiles/ellington..._diminuendo.htm

  23. At the 4&5 March, 1958 Mather AFB, Sacramento (Cal) date, none of the titles I listed in my previous post with bold letters were played, neither were Polly or Flirty Bird. At the 22 July, 1960 Mather AFB, Sacramento (Cal) date, none of the titles I listed in my previous post with bold letters were played, but there's another version of Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue. Oops, now I see Pete B's post. So, no need to keep on perusing Timner and Lambert.
  24. Look what Timner, 4th edition, lists: ----------------------------------------------------------- 1 Jun 1957 Sunset Ballroom Carrolltown, Pa. Duke Ellington and his Orchestra Clark Terry, Willie Cook, Harold Baker, Ray Nance; Booty Woodman, Quentin Jackson, John Sanders; Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Russell Procope, Paul Gonsalves, Harry Carney; Duke Ellington; Joe Benjamin, Sam Woodyard; Jimmy Grissom. 14 previous tunes not in your disc but then: Cop Out Frustration Take The A Train The Hawk Talks Three Little Words As Time Goes By The Happy One Caravan Diminuendo In Blue And Crescendo In Blue Things Ain't What They Used To Be I Got It Bad On The Sunny Side Of The Street I Let A Song... / Don't Get Around... ----------------------------------------------------------- So we're still missing Polly's Tune/Flirty Bird.
  25. To my knowledge, Koala was an Australian/American label which issued some live Ellington dates, partially. At least I can remember the dance date at Carrolltown, Pennsylvania in June 1957; the March 4&5 1958 dance dates at the Travis Air Force Base; and the Mather Air Force Base date on July 22, 1960. Probably your disc contains selections from one or two of them. I will try to add some discographical information later.
