  5. There's an interesting article by Jack Chambers on the July-August 2006 issue of Coda (n. 328), called "Duke Ellington's Parallel Universe: The Secret Stockpile" where, besides a profound analysis on the so called "stockpile recordings", he tells the story of the Mercer Ellington-Leonard Feather owned label. Small excerpt:

  7. Guess you're talking about one of these two 1951 private sessions: (extracted from Peter Losin's Charlie Parker discography)
  8. Shame MF can't show up to announce this. Well, Chuck, he's probably involved in many projects and I guess he has had no spare time to hang around here lately.

    Al Hibbler

No reference of Al Hibler singing "I didn't know about you" with the Ellington Orchestra found on Timner (4th Edition). The song was quite usual in the band's book in the mid-40s, but with vocals by Joya Sherrill or Betty Roché.
  10. About 25 new "Leader Discographies" are now available at Michael Fitzgerald's website, among them those of Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, Mulgrew Miller or Dewey Redman.

  15. Spanish publisher Electa has just put out a book with the photographs of the great Herman Leonard, called "Tras la escena. La fotografía de Herman Leonard". Hardback. 31 x 24 cm. 238 pages. I guess it's the Spanish edition of the recently published "Jazz, Giants and Journeys: The Photography of Herman Leonard" from Scala Publishers. Haven't put my hands on it yet, so I can't tell you anything about the quality of this edition... but it will be a Christmas present, for sure!
  16. 18 €, obviously mispriced (in these occasions, I looooove that those big stores don't know a word about jazz!)
  17. Just picked the first volume (3CD) of this Intégrale Louis Armstrong, and for a bargain price (obviously mispriced, 18 €!!!) I think this is going to be as great as the Django Reinhardt Complete series. Yes, I know, many of us have most of this early Armstrong material over and over but I think it's great to have it all in one collection, and what a great collection! (Disclaimer: I missed the Louis Armstrong Masters Of Jazz series) Liner notes by Daniel Nevers and photographs enclosed are very good (and Laurie Wright's involving is a guarantee of quality, though his only contribution is the English translation of these liner notes). Packaging is great as usual. And as for sound quality, I haven't A/B checked with other releases (mostly Classics and King Jazz CDs in my case), but the overall impression is good. BTW: Volume 2 has just been released:
