From my Tete Montoliu research, I have discovered this session (different from the "Ben Webster Meets Don Byas" session, and actually recorded two days later): Date: February 3, 1968 Location: SWF’s Studio, Karlsruhe, Germany Label: [radio broadcast] Don Byas, Ben Webster (ldr), Don Byas, Ben Webster (ts), Tete Montoliu (p), Peter Trunk (b), Albert 'Tootie' Heath (d) a. Perdido (15:14) b. Stardust (5:12) Omit Don Bays (ts) on b. Broadcast on SWF Jazz Session program. I know this has been issued on a disc called something like "Tenorbattle" or "Tenor Battle", but I have no further reference (label, catalog number, additional material included...). He's supposed to have acted as a sideman for Bird in a few gigs, while still on his teens. No recorded evidence, to my knowledge.

This comes from somebody who got a review copy of this upcoming 8 CD set: -Some 1940 broadcasts -Fargo concert (2 CDs worth) -1943 Carnegie Hall concert (2 CDs worth) -and other tracks up to and including 1948. So 4 out of 8 discs are the Fargo and the 1943 Carnegie Hall concerts. Though reportedly they have done a very good remastering job, it's bit deceiving, isn't it?

The first installment of the Duke Ellington special on the Spanish website Tomajazz is now online. This special will comprise original chronological and/or thematic articles on Ellington´s music, a selected and comented CD discography, translations into Spanish of previously published articles and interviews, an Ellington Gallery and a few more miscellaneous items. ... have ya the recent release - Mary Lou Williams Circle recordings (Progressive 7142)? Nope! It was in my first pre-selection, but I wanted to reduce my order to about 100 USD.... See the Harlem Stride Piano thread for some information on the Donald Lambert CD. As for the Hines discs, lately I am becoming a 'Fatha' sucker. His magnificent control over the whole keyboard, his unexpected runs... my God, what a player! Though not a stride piano player (in fact his typical approach is just the opposite -trumpet-like pianism vs orchestral pianism-), I've put him very near my pantheon of stride masters.

Looks like Chris Albertson is not round here anymore, but he has brought very interesting memories re Donald Lambert at AAJ:

Solo Art has just released a CD with the 1961 Circle recordings of stride pianist Donald Lambert. DONALD LAMBERT AND HIS HARLEM PIANO: GIANT STRIDE SoloArt (SACD 44) It's a straight reissue of the original LP, so no additional material (just 40 minutes of music, not 50 as it's claimed in the Jazzology website). There's more material from those 1961 sessions and from a previous one in 1950, which they have left out. Hopefully there will be a volume 2. Anyway, it's always a pleasure to see a CD release of the sadly underrecorded Donald Lambert.
