  1. Yes, but that was many months ago. Not sure what has happened with the DETS series after Storyville was purchased. I recently asked in the duke-lym list if there's an expected release date for those new volumes and got no replies.
  2. Click on each of the 54 jazz musicians to see the drawings EDIT to add the link to the English version of the website
  3. Rest in peace. Another great is gone. A personal favorite of mine.
  4. God bless "Cañoncito" Puskas. Kopa, Rial, Di Stefano, Puskas & Gento. One of the best forward lines. Ever.
  5. Thanks for starting this thread, Chuck. Count me as a Harry Carney die-hard fan! The sound of Duke Ellington's orchestra wouldn´t have been the same without him. I only regret he didn't record more as a leader... To my knowledge these are his only leader dates: -the "Harry Carney's Big Eight" HRS from 1946 -the Wax date from 1947 (two sides) -two sides recorded by Norman Granz for the Jazz Scene album -the "Harry Carney with strings" disc (despite negative opinions, I love this album) -the "Harry Carney and the Dukes men" (1958)
  6. This was recently posted at AAJ:
  7. Just came from the Marc Copland Quartet (with Tim Hagans) concert. A nice one, though I would have desired more solo space for Marc.
  8. I recently bought 'Jay McShann/Milt Buckner - Kansas City Memories' on the French Black&Blue label. Listening to "Milt Jay Bird" (co-credited to McShann and Buckner and played as a two-pianos+bass+drums feature)... am I wrong or this is just a variation of James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout"?
  9. I have no news on this regard, but will ask at the dukelym list.... No news from duke-lym. BTW, I ordered a few DETS volumes that I was still missing the other day.... been in a Ducal hunting lately.
  10. I had also spotted this one and put it on my wish list... FWIW, here´s the cover: And the info available at the Mighty Quinn website:
  11. Nah! Surely it is Tony Manero...

  13. I love "St. James Infirmary", even if it´s a tuba solo.

    Vic Berton

Ralph Berton claims Vic was the first to use brushes on "Remembering Bix":
  15. Last Tuesday (XXV Festival de Jazz del San Juan Evangelista): Dave Douglas Quintet ("Meaning And Mistery" project), with Don MacCaslin (ts), Uri Caine (Fender Rhodes), James Genus (b) and Clarence Penn (d).
  16. Just got these Black&Blue CDs in the mail: Broadway (Irvin Stokes) Sneakin' Around (Helen Humes) Scufflin' (Harold Ashby) Kansas City Memories ( Jay McShann, Milt Buckner) Cat Speaks (Cat Anderson) Gettin' In The Groove (Panama Francis) Tenor Abrupt (Arnett Cobb, Guy Lafitte) Just You, Just Me. (Earl Hines, Harry Edison)
  17. A bit late but... ¡FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS, BROWNIE! (sorry, been away from my computer this weekend and missed your birthday!)
  18. In accordance with this, my first post was also pretty tame! Yes, it seems as it is under construction, with more contents coming.

    Frog Records

Another CD has just been announced on their website: DGF 62 Memphis Jug Band - The complete Vocalion & Okeh recordings plus unissued Victor tests, vol.4
  20. Hey Dan, fastest trigger gets it all! Other very recommended Black&Blue titles, though not in this offer, are the Joe Turners ("Joe´s back in town" and "Poor butterfly") and the Johnny Guarnieri .
  21. ... and 20´s, 30´s even first!... unless that, in spite of good remastering, you can´t stand that "early days" sound.
