    Ellington Suites

BTW: in the latest CD issue, the silence between Dance#1 and Dance#2 has been eliminated. But, in this process, the first bar of Dance#2, has also been cut off !!!

    Ellington Suites

There´s a studio version of the entire Liberian Suite for Columbia (dec 24, 1947), three days before the Carnegie Hall concert, recorded at the Liederkrantz Hall. Originally issued as Columbia CL-6073, it can be found on CD in the Chronogical Duke Ellington 1947-48 (Classics 1119) and it has been included as bonus tracks in the 2004 reissue of "Ellington Uptown" (87066) There´s also a studio recording of "I like the sunrise" for Verve, with Ella Fitzgerald (oct. 1965) and another one with Frank Sinatra for Reprise (dec. 1967).
  3. Probably the very same John Litweiler will answer you!
  4. Man--I didn't know Chris was doing that. Uh, add it to the "eagerly awaited" list, pronto. As far as I know, a lot of research work has been done, but this project is "temporarily forgotten", as he´s working on his autobiography. Chris?
  5. In fact (and unfortunately), I´ve never seen a single Uptown disc in Madrid jazz stores.

  8. On the Definitive/Disconforme/Absolute Distribution empire, there´s a lot to say. They issue discs under many different labels: -Definitive Records -Lonehill Jazz -Blue Moon -Jazz Factory -Fresh Sound Records ... to name a few. Where´s the limit and the difference between them? I don´t know with accuracy.
  9. Good question, bertrand.

  11. Take a look at this list of pirate and bootleg labels that have issued Monk LP´s and CD´s. Amazing, only for Monk! MONKZONE

  14. Yes, but the bottom line is, Michael is unconvinced of the sales potential of a full Mosaic box. Going with the smaller, less costly Select approach will minimize the risk of a full set that doesn't sell. Hey, and what about sales on a 10 CD Mildred Bailey or a 9 CD Four Freshmen box? Experience is the best teacher? Ooops, I just thought they worked for the fun of it!

  16. Because there were so many of them (13 sessions if you include Babes Blues which was released in the late 80s), it would make for one big ass box that wouldn't exactly be cheap, especially since its almost a given that a full blown Mosaic box will include unissued tunes, making it even bigger. The Selects are a lower price point and I would assume that Michael expects more people to buy one or two of the Selects and not all three; better to give them the chance to sample than to ask them to pay $100+ for the whole shebang, especially when, and even the former GHF will admit this, there isn't a lot of variety to the recordings. But that would apply to many of the bigger (7, 8, 9... discs) Mosaic boxes, Dan. And this hasn´t been the policy so far.

  19. Just picked, for 6.50 EUR each: -The swinging guitar of Tal Farlow -Anita O´Day-Carl Tjader: Time for 2 on the Verve by Request series. In fact, I have planned to acquire de Tal Farlow Mosaic but, for 6.50 EUR, I just couldn´t resist. I´ll enjoy this one for now, and sell it when I buy the Mosaic.

    Anthony Braxton

Been enjoying Braxton/Roach duo on hatOLOGY, "One in two-Two in one" this past weekend. An attentive listening of the interaction between the two players becomes a very rewarding experience!

  23. Sad news for the Ellingtonians... and for jazz in general. What a week!
