Don Cheadle may play Miles Davis in biopic
Dmitry replied to mgraham333's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah, man. I'll ice your ass...with music. That Miles muthafacka was baaaaaad. -
65" OLED sounds great, but would cost $3K+. Judging that I've been watching the EDTV for 10 years, and a 19" tube tv for 15 years prior to that, I don't think I'm OLED material. I just ordered this baby - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-65-class-64-5-diag--led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-black/4517900.p?id=1219755712404&skuId=4517900&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=4517900&extensionType=pla_multichannel:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!142919520071!g!!90347250431&kpid=4517900&k_clickid=53eb5c97-1b5a-4de0-abda-03de315e4005&lsft=ref:212,loc:1&ksid=53eb5c97-1b5a-4de0-abda-03de315e4005&ksprof_id=16&ksaffcode=pg22362&ksdevice=c&gclid=CjwKEAiAuKy1BRCY5bTuvPeopXcSJAAq4OVsdKx_ZrC2A3Zjve2SjfjhBE4EAs9XT_6hzGA1NK_t2RoCfTXw_wcB Reviews are very positive. I'm somewhat excited.

Not again!

I don't know if this was intentional, but it made me chuckle. -
I tried, but all I see are just mirror sites, which redirect to the WSJ article, which is hidden.. In other news, I just got a new ROKU2. The one I have is a 1st gen. unit. Let's see what this new one does better.
-
I can't read it, not a subscriber.
-
I think it's time for a new unit. The existing one is 11 y.o. and is not HDTV, it's EDTV. Damn 42" Panasonic just refuses to die, so I'm thinking of dumping it into the CL, or donating it to the school, if they will want to take it. Our local big box retailer is having a pre-SuperBowl sale {apparently this is THE time for buy a new TV for serious savings}, and they have a 60" 4K TV for $1,300, and a regular 1080 HD 60" unit for well under a grand. I know nothing about the current TV technology. Do I really need a 4K? We don't have cable, so no 4K programming to watch. Just get the regular HDTV, or pay a little extra for the future 4K capability? Any particular manufacturers are recommended? We do watch a lot of football [the real one, what you call soccer], and the European Cup is coming up this summer. Plus the Olympics.

Digitizing vinyl and listening to hi-rez. An interesting article on 192/24.
Dmitry replied to Dmitry's topic in Audio Talk
The preamp only has conventional rca inputs. I'm thinking ideally I would have these audio files in a type of a box with rca outputs, and a hand-held controller, like a tablet, laptop or my phone, from which, sitting in my listening chair, I could select the songs to be played, and which would have the access to the library contained in the said box, with cover art, track lists, personnel, etc. Does such thing exist? Also, how would I transfer these music files to the said box from my laptop, on which I would do the track processing/splicing/cover art, etc.? Newb..I know. -
Death of the iPod (Everyone's buying vinyl)

Plus vinyl hunting is fun. I like the big covers too. -
Not really. A couple of points. 1.Red Army was almost ready for an attack on Germany in 1941. Hence millions of Soviet troops, tens of thousands of tanks and planes amassed on the border that and prior year. Hitler was faster, and the Wehrmacht attacked first. 2. Soviets were not buying time. They lost over 2 million soldiers in the summer of 1941 alone, and lost every battle. The would have lost the war as early as 1942, if it weren't for the US LandLease program.

http://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-DR-05-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B004OU2IQG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453822584&sr=8-1&keywords=tascam+recorder I'm thinking of purchasing this Tascam DR-05 digital recorder for vinyl ripping. It has a line-in jack, so I can plug it into the second output of my preamp. It records up to 96/24. It has a usb out and records on the microSD card, so I can transfer the contents into my laptop. My question is , how would I playback these files via my hifi? Do I have to burn them on cd, which would negate the 96/24 resolution...or an upload into my iPod Nano is possible? So I'm old school... -

Ahem...it's a pretty obscure record, but I'll take a guess. -

Lol, I also don't wear a watch, unless we're traveling where my cell phone won't work. Then I wear a Casio sports watch, purchased for that very reason. Timer and stopwatch functions really help, when needed. Like you, I don't wear a wedding ring. Almost from the get go it got bent into an oval shape due to the nature of work that I do. Wife's got it somewhere, I'm sure. She, otoh, can't go out of the house without a watch on, and has been wearing her wedding ring since day one...I think. To get back on topic...I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I do have an Ipod, a thin one, with a screen, I think it's Ipod Nano? It's in the car, I think..but I don't use it at all. I should fill it up, I guess. What format should I use that doesn't take up a lot space, and sounds good? -
Are there any box bargains currently available?
Dmitry replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Damn that's cheap! Are the artists getting royalties from these sets? I'm still confused about these uber-inexpensive cd sets from Europe, don't have a single one. -
Nope. Listened to some samples of the Edwards tentet from this box. Sounds pretty good!

The real question here is...how come the king of hip does not have a single Blue Note album in that bunch?! -

It very well could be. Claxton shot a lot of staged McQ photos, with chicks and cars. -
The defintion of fetishism Nope. This is not what the term fetishism means. This is fetishism - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetishism I recognize that you're trying to sew a psychopathological lining into the collectors purse, and I see where you're going with this, but I think the terminology you're using is off the mark.
-
Well, tell that to the topic starter...I think his whole setup cost less than your souped-up Rega. Soup to nuts.
-
Actually, it's not the same thing. Rega does not produce these alterations. They sell their tables without a disclaimer that Rega's el cheapo plastic sub-platter is worse than the third party aluminum one, or the whole turntable can be bettered by various additional tweaks. In other words, their turntables' perceived shortcomings have generated a cottage industry, offering various tweaks for the the $1,000+ turntables. I find it amusing that someone would knowingly go out and buy a very expensive unit, and spend another $500-$1,000+ to make it "several levels better". Linn, otoh, is quite honest with their customers, by offering upgrades.
-
You've just proven my point. Rega charges a cool $1,000 for a tt that you will spend another $1,000+ to customize, basically altering almost all parts of it. As I wrote - Imho Rega charges much money for so little in terms of what they offer to their consumer...

In his last post he describes narcissistic behavior. I'm referring to this - More likely worship himself about his amazing superhuman power (including monetary power) of being able to round up such "desirable" items. And of course, the 1st press of Indeed and 1st edition of Darwin ARE superior to the others. For example, wouldn't You gladly pay $100 for either, knowing that they are worth more? That doesn't make you a fetishist, just someone who knows an amazing bargain. If it's only some, as you describe, who think these are superior to millions of other copies, then to all others these objects would have minimal, if any value. But this is not the case.
-
If the sound quality is good, this is definitely on my 'to buy' list. I see that they didn't do the Girl from Ipanema...not a bad thing. I'll probably go for the cd vs. the vinyl.
-
I understand what you're saying, however there is a clear definition of the term "fetishism", and it doesn't comply with your application of it to the collecting of record albums. What you've described is narcissism, not fetishism. Now, if we bring the $7,000 Lee Morgan's Indeed album back as an example, I think it just proves that someone who has deep pockets and collects records, will obviously spend more than someone who can't afford the price, and nothing else. And the more wealthy people will get into this area of collecting, the more the prices will rise. For instance, someone who collects rare books will spend $170,000 on a mint-conditioned first edition of Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species. In relative terms, collecting of record albums will seem like a bargain. Both the 1st pressing of Lee Morgan's Indeed, and the 1st edition of Darwin are just that - first of many, and thus unique. We can listen and read the consequent copies, which, like you said, sound pretty good. That's what I do. I do admire the collectors, though. They help preserve the world's heritage.

http://www.trustmeimascientist.com/2013/02/04/the-science-of-sample-rates-when-higher-is-better-and-when-it-isnt/ Interesting and non-partisan article that focuses on hi-rez, namely 192kHz. Apparently the scientists are not impressed. I've been toying with the idea of digitizing some of my records, and won't futz around with the 192kHz/24bit. It doesn't seem to make an iota of difference over 96, or 88kHz.
