Thanks, Uli. That looks like an awesome event, alas I will be in DC on the 6,7,8 of April. http://www.dummymag.com/lists/the-10-best-record-stores-in-washington-dc Now, of these, which one is the best in terms of quality of the vinyl, not the quantity? I will only be able to visit one record store. Thanks.

Best city to live in for 'Quality of Life'

I am emphatic all right, товарищ Рокфеллер. Same sort of thing has been going on in London over here. The cynic in me says there is a heck of a lot of money laundering that has been going on ! -
No-one from DC here? It doesn't look like much is happening in DC https://dcjazz.com/ Ramsey Lewis Quartet is in town, playing the Blues Alley. Just saw him solo, here in magical, incomparable and business-friendliest state of them all - Rhode Island. Looks like our paths have crossed again, this time in an even smaller body of land.

I'll be in DC for a couple of days next month, staying in a hotel near the National Mall. Really want to visit the NA Museum in Annapolis. Unless I'm missing it, there is no convenient way to do it via public transportation. Not crazy about renting a car, but is this the only sensible way to do it, for a 1/2-day trip? i was under the impression that the DC and environs are served very well by the rail system.

Lol. If you want to draw me into this, you'll have to do better than these raggedy old record changers, with their 20 gram corundum needles. And besides, listening to these terrible, distorted and otherwise flawed records is what got most of you old farts, except of course the forum iconoclast aka Scott, into jazz. Not cds...records.

Best city to live in for 'Quality of Life'

German-speaking cities dominate the rankings in the 18th Mercer Quality of Life study, with Vienna joined by Zurich, Munich, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt in the top seven. Who made up this list, the North African and Arab migrants? Sounds about right. -
I used to attend religiously, until we moved out of NY, and then sporadically. Last year was a good one. The new venue in Brooklyn is excellent, airy and well-illuminated. Definitely will be showing up this year as well, on Saturday morning. If anyone wants to hang or just say Hi, let's do it. https://wfmu.org/recfair/

I like beer and I like breasts. Do I feel the need to discuss this on-line? No.

Thanks for the info. Two trumpet movies in one month. What are the odd of that?! ..Hmm, this actually looks like a thought-out film.

RAMSEY LEWIS SOLO IN RHODE ISLAND FEB.18, 2016

Funny you should say that... http://alumniconnect.bryant.edu/s/1434/alumEngagement/interior.aspx?sid=1434&gid=1&pgid=1962&cid=3976&ecid=3976&crid=0&calpgid=13&calcid=664 -
Yep. There's an OCD component to it as well, I reckon. Also, I wonder how durable the master tapes are. Plus all those numerous KOB reissues, I doubt original tapes are still used.

It's been almost 2 weeks with the new tv , and I must say it's awesome. I don't know what the LG blur would look like, and I'm sure the OLED looks much nice, but damn, this 4K tv is infinitely better than what we've had for almost a dozen years. I did buy the Harmony 650 remote, which was a breeze to program, but the elderly in-laws that are staying with us continue to use the 3 oem remotes, as opposed to one universal. So now we have 4 remotes instead of 3. The question I now have is how to fine tune the picture on this tv? It came pre-tuned from LG, but I'm sure there's a way to zero it in even better. Ph, and nobody wants my old 42" plasma. Craigslist is teeming with old flat screens, which people almost give away. I haven't called the Salvation Army yet, not even sure they would take it.

The analog medium is inherently flawed, playback is prone to defects and numerous variables... Got it now, Scott?

The analog medium is inherently flawed, playback is prone to defects and numerous variables...but I love holding the sleeves, looking at the artwork, being able to read liner notes without my glasses, and of course dropping the needle onto the lead-in groove. PC starts, Bill Evans takes the challenge. It's magical. CDs...they are just too easy.

Bryant university. A nice small amphitheatre venue. Are you going to the Frankenfest? -
RAMSEY LEWIS SOLO IN RHODE ISLAND FEB.18, 2016
Dmitry replied to Dmitry's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Lewis has some serious chops for standards and stride. He played Coltrane's Dear Lord! I didn't expect that. He also talked about Maurice White, warmly reminiscing about him and their work on the Sun Goddess. All-together it was an almost 90 minutes-worth of solo Steinway & Sons. Lewis is going to be 81 this year. -

Scatting to Hank Mobley's solo on If I Should Lose you.

I'm no musician, but I find her range quite limited to attempt to emulate Coltrane's tenor. It's like playing it on a recorder. I recognize what it is, but it's like a pencil sketch of Mona Lisa. Just my $0.02 -
I'm not privy to the contemporary jazz vocals scene, so those names don't mean anything to me. Heck, anyone named Jamison Ross sounds just too f@#$ing preppy. This girl is good. She won. Never heard of here before. I hear some Jeanne Lee in her, among others. Here's the whole jazz line-up. https://www.grammy.com/nominees?genre=16

Speaking of that...does a 89 y.o. singer with 17 other Grammy's under his belt really need/merit another one in the best traditional pop vocal album category? Or we should view it as Bill Charlap's triumph?

No , I think your Zappa analogy doesn't play here. Parallels between Kamasi and Sun Ra: 1.Two large scale orchestras + singers & dancers, playing non-conventional music. 2.Both play original tunes, no standards. 3.Both woodshed-ed, and pretty much lived together with other band members [according to the NYT piece on KW that's what he did/does]. 4.Both would draw large non-jazz audiences. For example, I heard Sun Ra on the same bill with the Sonic Youth. Those are just the obvious similarities.

Getting back on topic .. I just watched/listened to The Epic on youtube. The music is OK, nothing amazing IMHO. I lost interest with it after a while. There once was a much more original big band with it's leader also dressed unconventionally. It was called the Sun Ra Arkestra. I am surprised no one here has drawn the parallels between Sun Ra's and Kamasi's acts. Am I off by comparing the two? Even though I was less than thrilled about the music, I'm glad there's an act like him. It's always good to have the non-jazz listeners exposed to our music. Because all of us were non-jazz listeners once.
