Two quintet dates - 'Oh baby' and 'Steppin' out' - with Vick, Mitchell, Patton & Dixon spring to mind immediately MG How could I forget them. I've got the Vangelder ear Oh Baby too. Steppin Out was one of the last sessions in Grant's discography I got to hear. Don't think I'll be finding an original vangelder of that anytime soon. The Soul Brotherhood is one of my all time favourites as well. Yes, the Kynard session SHOULD have sprung to my mind as immediately as the 2 Blue Note jobs. MG

Hank Mobley - The Feelin's Good
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Tom 1960's topic in New Releases
Well, I dont think that these audiophile LP releases are at all suitable for soul jazz. Hell, the music was always for parties and dancing! No audiophile company is going to want people spilling beer over their product, or bouncing up and down near the turntable, causing the stylus to bounce sympathetically, then complaining it doesn't play properly. Good job too MG -
I think there's something in that, but perhaps not what you think. Early in his career, GG said (can't remember which sleeve note it was) that he didn't listen to other guitarists but to sax players. I don't think he was averse to trumpet players - in addition to those mentioned earlier, he was with Bill Hardman on Lou Donaldson's 'Musty Rusty'; Richard Williams on 'The way I feel'; Clark Terry on 'The grass is greener'; Tommy Turrentine on 'Blue John' and 'Natural soul'; Virgil Jones on 'Pereson to person'; Marcus Belgrave on 'The real thing'; Chuck Mangione on 'Hold on I'm comin''; Irvin Stokes on 'Man with a horn'; others, too, I expect, as I haven't looked through his entire discography. Few guitarists apart from Grant Green recorded with a musical saw player in the band; does that mean they're averse to musical saw players? Well, maybe... But GG would and could play with anyone. MG

What music did you buy today?

Postman just brought me 2 CDs Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers - Dateline/Big stick - Prestige (Ace BGP) Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers - Saffron & soup/Shuckin' and jivin' - Prestige (Ace BGP) Terrific! MG -
CD Universe sent me an e-mail to say this was coming out in a few days. Well, it's been out since February over here, but I didn't know, so, thanks CD Universe but I won't buy it from you Four albums and I haven't got any of them. 3 are Moodsville albums: Good old Broadway - MV23 No strings - MV25 Make someone happy - MV31 Today and now is an Impulse job, which I used to have and enjoyed before financial pressure hit 'Good old Broadway' and 'Make someone happy' were issued (with a couple of tracks from 'No strings') on 'On Broadway' (PR24189 - which I've had in my wish list for a few years ) but I think the rest of 'No strings' has remained unissued on CD (surely not?). So, as I love Hawk's Prestige material, this is a worthwhile reissue, as far as I'm concerned. Everything comes to he who waits - but then you've got to carpe diem! MG So, when I went to order it, found it's not coming out here until 15 April. Oh well, I'll carpe diem later, then

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

What a fun date! I play this on CD quite a bit. Well worth the listen. MIne's on Roulette. Did Prestige have to hand it over to them at sometime? The album illustrated is Roulette SR59049. The original issue was Prestige PR7459. Recorded 10 Sep 1965; produced by Richard Carpenter (who I think was Stitt's manager). I've never seen this album on either label. As far as I knew, in this period, Sonny wasn't contracted to any label. Maybe Prestige didn't own the master but Carpenter? And he passed it to whomever he could get bucks from? MG -
Hank Mobley - The Feelin's Good
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Tom 1960's topic in New Releases
Mosaic, too, is a label driven by the taste of the owners. What do you expectr? So is Nessa, so were Chess, Vee-Jay, Verve, Atlantic, Blue Note, Contemporary etc (plus some localisation elements, of course). Any label owned by an entrepreneur is going to focus on what the guy or guys think or thought would make money. Chuck doesn't chuck his money away. Oh, and how many soul jazz boxes have Mosaic issued? Not many and most on the verge of getting it on - Big Blue Mitchell Stan Turrentine Jazz Crusaders Select John Patton Curtis Amy Bennie Green Duke Pearson? No Freddie Roach, because MC doesn't think the quality's up to much. No McGriff on Sue or Solid State (both owned by EMI). No Lou Donaldon late BNs. Ditto Grant Green. No Les McCann on PJ or Atlantic. No Hank Crawford or Dave Newman Atlantics... The list of classic soul jazz that Mosiac could but won't issue is endless. MG -

I've got the 10CD JATP set on Membran very similar but not exactly what's on the Verve set and of course no personnel details or notes, but a little searching on the internet gets you all the necessary info. Thoroughly enjoyable. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jazz-at-Philharmonic-Norman-Granz/dp/B002PDB9LE/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1364729760&sr=1-1 Thanks for the link, Ray - just ordered it. See you reviewed it there MG -
Hank Mobley - The Feelin's Good
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Tom 1960's topic in New Releases
All this material HAS been released on LP & CD. This is just putting it all together. A worthy thing to do but I could just shuffle my Mobley rips around on the hard drive and get a digital version. So, no real point in BN issuing a CD, I'd guess. They've done a LOVELY job on the sleeve, I will say. MG
