Oh, sorry to hear this. I liked Gene from hearing his first 45 for Atlantic - Sticks & Stones.
Have been recently grooving hard to his album "Duff's blues" with the Bill Warfield big band.

And Curtis played a solo on one of the Stones' LPs in the late sixties - was it the one with the irthday cake on the cover?
He also played the soprano solo on Carole KIng's "It's too late" if I recall it right.

Yes, me too. But I also forgot to get Jimmy SMith's "Straight life" - it didn't come out all that long ago, did it? - and never got round to getting Horace's "Soul sister" and "Silver's" serenades on CD, though I've got 'em on LP. I suppose they'd better go on the priority list.

I've bought a few Jackie McLeans and have a number with him as a sideman. Don't really like him much. The only ones I play much are "Tippin' the scales" - for Sonny, really - and "Jackie's bag" for Tina.
I think, with hard bop musicians, there are quite a few I don't really like much but, when I feel like it, I really want to hear their stuff. Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan fall into this group. It's not their music as such that I don't like; it's more their personas as they come through the music.

Another great Syliphone 2 CD compilation from Sterns, selected by Graeme Counsel; this time featuring Keletigui & ses Tambourinis.
I already have about half of one disc, so I know it's terrific. And the rest, as I listen, is every bit as good so far.
