  1. Sonny Stitt - Primitivo soul - Prestige (blue label) - boy, am I GLAD Dan Gould sold me this one!!!! then Arthur Scales - I'm a believer - I Am - I wasn't too impressed the first time I listened to this. Scales seemed a bit too smooth for a gospel sax player. Now I see it's a problem with the drum machines; on the tracks he does without them, he's fine - passionate and fiery. This is from 1989 and I Am was distributed by A&M, so I guess some major influence got in there somehow. MG
  2. Somewhere on the board, someone posted to the effect that Mosaic number don't necessarily run consecutively - ie that the low numbers are always sent out early and the hich ones late. MG
  3. Mildred Clark & the Melodyaires - Help me Jesus - Heat MG

  9. Ramsey Lewis & Jean DuShon - You better believe me - Argo MG
  10. Clair Rayner Prince Rainier (by implication) Louis XV
  11. Rev Clay Evans & Fellowship Baptist Church Choir - From the ship - Savoy MG
  12. Welcome Azar. I'll certainly get this. I saw you with Billy Harper at Smoke last month and regretted missing out on your music for so long. MG
  13. "Goin' Places" was the first TJB album that was recorded with Herb's touring band. The previous 4 albums all used studio cats. Now that's odd, since Alpert ran the record company and could have used whatever musicians he wanted (I assume). Or was it that he didn't start touring until he had got four hit LPs under his belt? MG Actually, I always thought it was fairly common for big name musicians to have separate touring bands. TJB started as a studio project, so that may have been a part of it. Maybe it took a while for the personnel to stabilize and for the band to fall into a consistent groove. I agree - I'm sure that was normal practice. But most bandleaders weren't owners of record companies. MG
  14. Not sure what to say, Jim. I DL'd it and unzipped and I have no tags showing in iTunes. Not sure what else I can do to "wipe" them. I've sent you a PM which should help. MG
  15. But with so many musicians making their own discs nowadays, a little relevant span does no one any harm. MG

  17. I'm certainly not competent to do that. MG
  18. OK - the OJCs are fine. You should be aware that this box includes the following Jaws/Shirley Prestige LPs Cookbook vol 1 (an alternative take of "But beautiful", of which I wasn't previously aware, and not listed in the 1978 Prestige discography, is included) Cookbook vol 2 Cookbook vol 3 Smokin' Jaws and At ease (MV) - but one track from this LP, "Man with horn", has been omitted. Pricewise, this looks to be a better deal than buying the OJCs separately. The tracks are set out in order of recording with the exception of one track (WTF?!?!?!?) Prestige issued this material in a most higgledy-piggledy way (a frequent practice), so I guess one can get a different perspective on these classic sessions. "At ease" was recorded 31 Jan 1960 and must have been released early in that year, so it's only just come out of copyright. I dare say the stuff has been copied from Prestige CDs, so the sound is likely to be good. MG
