Little Peggy March Charles Walker John Scott Trotter -
Two Kandia Kouyate CDs have been issued this year by Syllart Records. They are available through Sterns. The first to come out was “Ngara”, issued in June. In August, Syllart issued “Amary Daou” These are not recent recordings. They purport to be compilations of material from her first two LPs. But it’s not quite as simple as that. For one thing, discographers are in some doubt as to when her first two LPs came out or were recorded. Amary Daou presents Kandia Kouyate – Amary Daou AD001 is dated as 1983 or 1984. Le grande vedette Malienne et L’Ensemble Instrumental du Mali – KS232 or Disco Stock 7220 is dated 1986 or 1983. And the sleeve notes to “Ngara” date the recording to 1981. And she recorded “OUA” (Bolibana) in late 1982 or early 1983, for the March 1983 meeting of heads of state of the Organisation of African Unity. Anyway, this material is early eighties. Well… some of it is. But, to make things more interesting, the track list provided for “Amary Daou” on the Sterns site is wrong – Amazon UK have what looks like the right listing on their MP3 site, which is what I’ve used to piece these two releases together. “Amary Daou” CD tracks and sources Balassama 7:41…………… “Amary Daou” LP Nyamadyla 6:37…………… “Amary Daou” LP Kandia Nana 6:00 ………… “Amary Daou” LP Ouale gnoumandon 5:14 … “Amary Daou” LP Bronkoly 7:09 ……………… “Amary Daou” LP Mayomba 14:47 …………… “Le grande vedette” LP Saradigan 11:24 …………... “Le grande vedette” LP Guede 13:08 ………………. “Le grande vedette” LP “Ngara” CD tracks and sources Kandia Djeli Nana 6:50……. Unissued 1999 recording Sora 9:35 …………………… Unissued 1999 recording Bouka 10:34 ……………….. Unissued 1999 recording Douwawou 7:06 …………… “Kita kan” CD Doninke 7:13 ...……………. “Kita kan” CD Sarama 6:54 ………………. “Amary Daou” LP Yolele 14:43 ……………….. “Le grande vedette” LP “Douwawou” and “Doninke” are supposed to have been recorded at the same sessions as the three unissued performances. These two tracks are the only ones on “Kita kan” that had not previously been issued on Syllart’s K7 “Woulale”. I hope this is helpful. These are BRILLIANT recordings! MG

If we look at the words of a number of songs, we can see without effort that their content is different, often radically so. For example, the content of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of war” is different to that of Cole Porter’s “Always true to you darling, in my fashion”, which is yet different to Porter’s “Night and day”. All different again in terms of content are Thomas A Dorsey’s “Take my hand, precious Lord”, James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift every voice and sing”, Louis Jordan’s “Saturday night fish fry”, and “I’m gonna move to the outskirts of town” and Youssou Ndour’s “Toxical waste”. If we look at the style of the words of these songs, we can also pick out differences in the way they’re put together. Some stylistic differences would be technical – are any of these songs written in iambic pentameter or what? Other observations would relate to the way the words are made to flow with the music or against it, the type of language used. And so on. But when we come to look at the content of the music that is part of those songs – or any music whatever – what can we say about content as distinct from style? There’s plenty we can say about style in music, but I’m at a loss to say what the differences in content between one piece of music and another are. Does this mean that music is style without content? (I suspect there will be technical statements that could be made but the skill of a great musician is surely to get through to an audience that is unequipped educationally to appreciate his skill; ie, keep off the technical stuff, please, music isn’t made for other musicians.) I'm thinking of getting another External hard drive from Amazon UK, if that's any help. (Gotta say, most of what I buy from Amazon is from sellers, which is no good to you, I think.) MG -

I get that, too. I'm on IE8. It's confusing if it doesn't always happen the same way. You close a window, rather than doing a "back", and you find you're out on your arse MG Well, if you hit the "compatibility display" button, everything will surely fall into place. See my earlier post about this. I just did that and everything's fucked up! I've got all the things everyone's been complaining about! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Gonna hit it again and see if I can stop it. MG Yes, that stopped it, thank goodness! So the problem with opening in the same or different windows isn't a compatibility display problem. -

Ah, I get it - you only get new content that's timestamped later than your last visit. So, when my computer stops and shuts itself down (which it did at about 7.30 this evening) the board thinks I'm not interested in the stuff I hadn't got around to reading before it shut down. Bummer. MG There's also the "Today's Active Content" link near the bottom of the main forum page (in one of the dark blue bars), that appears to give you the threads that have been posted to in the past 24 hrs or so - different than "View New Content", which as you say only offers up what is timestamped since your last visit. The first thing I did when I found that the new board was up was to copy that link ("Today's Active Content") and paste it in as my bookmark for the site. I'm not sure if Jim adjusted anything since then, but at the time I didn't see a way to bring up topics that were older than 24 hours. I see that there is one now (at the bottom of the "Active Content" page. Look for "Active in the last..." and a dropdown menu for more options. I've found the "today's active content" link now, thanks. But when I came on just now, I hit the "view new content", after I'd logged on - no, I did it before I'd logged on, but was told I didn't have permission, so I logged on and it automaticaly took me to a 24 hour list. So perhaps you get something different if you come in without logging on... Dunno. I'll look for the "active in the last..." link later and play with that for a while. MG Yes - I just tried the "today's active content" and "view new content" now I'm logged in and they give different results. They only give the same results if you're not logged in when you try the "view ne wcontent". -

I ordered 16 a couple of months ago and got 8. When I followed a link in their e-mail, I found that the balance of orders doesn't get filled if it's not filled within 30 days of the first dispatch date. So I can wish for those 8, if I want to use up my three wishes fruitlessly. MG -

Funny thing on the save jazz thread, which I only saw this evening. I'd got to page 11 when the board forgot which page I was on But it still took me to page 12 when I hit the next page arrow that doesn't look quite like an arrow. Then, when I reached page 13, it decided that, actually, there were only seven pages in the thread But it still took me to 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, when I hit the next arrow MG -

The "new content" list cuts off about two hours after that post This afternoon and evening, I've been listening to Houston Person - Basics - Muse Houston Person - Very personal - Muse promo Clifford Coulter - East Side San Jose - Impulse (red/black label) Clifford Coulter - Do it now, worry 'bout it later - Impulse (red/black label) MG
