  1. If this is an urban legend, it's the absolute best! The thing that's just slightly unconvincing is the use of American date format. MG
  2. Yeah, looks like answers will stimulate some remarks like OMG etc etc! MG
  3. He plays some nice organ on Maceo Parker's "Roots revisited". MG
  4. Not the Dr. Lonnie Liston Smith! Identified as plain Lonnie Smith on the album back cover! Ah, (mops brow). Thanks Brownie. MG
  5. OK, here's the first Organissimo all organist BFT. Someone said some time back that it was strange there hadn't been one. So here it is. There may be an organist or two on the bonus disc, but I'm not guaranteeing anything I'll be sending out downoad links on 31 March, for discussion during April. So PM me to get a link. And if you want actual CDs, PM me early, so I can get 'em in the post to far flung places. MG
  6. Anyone have any sleeve notes written by Dzondria LaIsac? Whoever he/she was, they appeared on Duke/Peacock LPs in the early '60s and they're so bad - so effin' awful - that they're magnificent. I just checked and I can only find 3 here, but there were quite a lot. MG
  7. Lonnie Smith? DR Lonnie Smith? I never knew... MG
  8. Yeah! Dig all those.... McGriff's uptempo version of Stella By Starlight is a killer on The Main Squeeze. Also, one of my all time favorite of the McGriff/Sonny Lester teamups is his "I've Got A NEW Woman" The songs are short, but tight and full of fire. And the sound of the organ is killer on that one. Fly Dude is just one of his best albums period! Fly Dude just arrived in the mail... Yay! Treatsville for you! Does it have any extra tracks? MG
  9. Actually, a complete Verve Hodges/Wild Bill Davis would be a great Mosaic! MG Throw in the RCA stuff and you got a deal. Yes, I thought there were only 6 Verves, which could make a Select. But there are 7, and I see there's quite a few unissued tracks. So adding in the RCAs, which I LURVE, makes sense for a biggish Mosaic box. (Though actually, isn't Atlantic City the acme?) MG
  10. That's the best critique of Smooth Jazz I've seen yet. Thanks for that thinking Lazaro. MG
  11. You won't dance the tango for dinner with poor loser RVG? Almost choking, here!!!! MG
  12. Over on the Vic Feldman thread, "Soviet Jazz themes" has gained support as a Mosaic Single. Just spreadin' it around, in case someone should be looking for ideas, y'know... MG
  13. Jimmy McGriff - Stump juice - GM orig UNAC 5/COGIC - A song is born - GosPearl orig MG
  14. Is 21 March his birthday? MG
  15. "Shhhhhhh.... (For a Little While)" (available here) Game over. Well, if it ain't coming out on CD - at least it's been reissued on LP. Everyone should have this http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=5y3...6%26amp%3By%3D6 $8.99 from Da Barstids MG Oh, and while I was having a look, I ordered 3 others. (I'm supposed to be saving up for an African music binge in Paris )
  16. Saw the personnel you listed and realized that Junior Cook, Slide Hampton, and Mickey Tucker (but not Bill Hardman) all play on Mickey Tucker's The Crawl, also recorded for Muse - obviously Mickey Tucker would have played on his own record. Anyway, I wondered if they were recorded on the same day or close together. Nope - Tucker's date was recorded sixteen months later. Never bought "The crawl" - good title. What's it like, Paul? MG
  17. Bill Hardman - Home - Muse orig with Junior Cook, Slide Hampton & Mickey Tucker. Very nice indeed! MG
  18. Also, one of my all time favorite of the McGriff/Sonny Lester teamups is his "I've Got A NEW Woman" The songs are short, but tight and full of fire. And the sound of the organ is killer on that one. Now that's one of the few I haven't got! MG
  19. Aretha Franklin Anna King Betty Harris
  20. Certainly not! Ron Jefferson was nowhere near great! He was a heavyhanded drummer relying on simple formulas. Had the misfortune of running into him on several occasions when he was in Paris in the mid-sixties. Not only was he a lousy drummer, he was also an obnoxious person! A musician to avoid! I always loved hs work with Les McCann. MG
  21. Actually, a complete Verve Hodges/Wild Bill Davis would be a great Mosaic! MG
  22. "but was roughly pushed aside." Thwow him wuffly to the floor, Centuwion! MG
  23. Very nice thanks Mark. He looked very smart. MG
  24. Just read today that Fred McMurray was a swing band tenor player in the early 30s. Oh, and Rhodri Morgan, first Minister of the Welsh Government is a bit of a jazz fan. MG
  25. Oh, the other terrific McGriff GMs are "Fly dude", with George Freeman and Ronald Arnold and "The main squeeze" with Ponder and the great Conrad Lester.
