  1. Thanks Brownie. I thought it looked rather English, but not so. MG
  2. Indeed - though I thought the broom cupboard was in Mayfair. Booms happen because there's more than one born every minute - a lot more. MG
  3. What film is that from? MG
  4. The only one of those I haven't got is "Blue silver", so I suppose I ought to get that pretty soon As Chuck said, it's kind of a no brainer - Silver & the Jazz Messengers. That's what I voted for. Yes, it was terrifically influential, and I can see why that aspect appeals to many. I love it because it was SO RIGHT FOR ITS TIME. And because it's so funky. And because it's got all that Ray Charles stuff in it. And because it always makes me feel good. But there aren't any Silvers I've got that don't make me feel good. Oh, and there aren't any non-funky Silvers that I've heard. So... MG
  5. Scott Dolan made me think of this. He noted that the Village Vanguard was a venue where everyone played their best stuff. But for me, the exception is David Newman's "Fire". Sometimes, a record looks great on form, but doesn't live up to your expectations. A live David Newman album, with Hank Crawford and Stanley Turrentine sitting in on some tracks, looks too good to be true, at least in my book. Trouble is, it WAS too good to be true. Everyone plays fine but, for an album called "Fire", the spark wasn't there. MG
  6. It was all me, doesn't anyone remember??? Actually, I remember several of us mentioning daily about AAJ and Organissimo. Several of us would post links to the other sites, while the Bluenote forum was still up, but they soon cut out that function. For shits and or grins, I posted both links in my signature, and you could still click thru to AAJ and Organissimo. Man, seems like a lot longer than 4 years ago..... Hero of the People! (Sorry) MG
  7. Now I've had a look at what's in it, a bit anyway, it seems that different people have selected the music of different periods. In the teens and twenties, it looks like only "hardcore" jazz has been included. But in the thirties, particularly the late thirties, material with much less connection to jazz was included. So, for example, Glen Miller's recordings were included, but Paul Whiteman's weren't. Surely there's not much to chose between them? MG
  8. Thanks - got it now. MG
  9. I recall one wonderful cheapo Italian epic film of the late '50s or early '60s, dubbed into English by American actors, in which the following line is uttered (hope I can convey the accent): "Ah aim a troo Romayn citizeyn; throw theym into the piyut!" MG

  12. Stevie Nicks Don Nix Tom Mix
  13. It might be because AAJ is given some publicity in magazines such as 'Jazzwise'. I much prefer the 'underground' feel of this place tho'. It's like a Dutch Fontana to AAJ's CBS! :g MG
  14. I was at that session. Some construction workers heard the music and walked in. The door to Rudy's studio opens to the performance space. Nice session. Glad to hear it attracted the workers Hope you enjoyed it, too. (edit - Oh - I didn't mean to imply you weren't working, Chuck.) MG
  15. Virgil Jones and, yes, he DOES sound like Lee, but not as hard. MG
  16. Ubu, I think you and Lon are at cross purposes. The Concord blow out sale wasn't open to European residents. I wasn't aware Universal had started to issue Concord/Fantasy material in Europe. Can you point me to a site where I can see what they've issued over here, please? MG
  17. I couldn't find any track listings. The few volumes I tried to open for details said there weren't any at present. A pity. MG
