Well, I didn't know that! Bet Spector never engineered a Wild Bill Moore date! MG New thread? Joe Meek worked for some time as Denis Preston's assistant at Lansdowne, engineering quite a few of their jazz sessions. Then branched off and did his own thing. Ah, so that was the connection! MG -

Shirley Scott - making the tenor/organ combo acceptable/successful. And where would we be without tenor/organ combos? MG -
Yes - all of those. And another I like a lot is "The truth" which was originally recorded for a Texas label, Jet Stream, but wound up being issued on Brunswick in the late '60s. It's a funny kind of LP, with some tracks being chopped up and used elsewhere, but T-Bone and the band are in fine form and, unusually, there's a nice trombonist in the band. I think (but haven't tried comparing them back to back) some of these tracks were on the CD "Rare & well done" - Home Cookin' (Blue Moon in Europe). There is also a Bluesway LP that I haven't got called "Funky town" and one on Polydor which I think was produced by Bob Koester (or maybe has simply been reissued on Delmark) which I also mean to get round to one day. What's that? I've been in Prague recently and I definitely fell in love with her. Porcy, You should have seen her back in 1983 before she went all high-end 'cosmetic upgrade' on us and started in with the heavy doses of pre-lipstick base, liquid foundation primer and lip defining pencil a la Burger King --- a truly natural, unpretentious beauty she was! It's all the stag nights that make the make-up necessary. MG -

What's the Deal with Elton and Rod?

Not me, of course Well, you should listen to the stuff on David Newman's "Scratch my back" - the finest album Orrin Keepnews ever produced and the greatest disco album ever - which DOESN'T have slush words. I wanted to put some on the BFT but the best tracks segue into one another and make up a 13 min marathon - I just couldn't do it to y'all MG -
What's the Deal with Elton and Rod?

Before he made it big as "Crocodile Dundee", Paul Hogan had a TV show in Australia (think Benny Hill) and my father's company, Gould Entertainment, had distribution rights in the US, and that was his first attempt to make an impact in the biggest entertainment market. One of the best segments I remember (and it was a very funny show) was a video vignette of Hogan doing pratfalls, while the main eye candy on the show, a stunning blonde with a killer body, strutted through the scenes in her Daisy Dukes, all to the sounds of "Hot Legs". Ah, I remember it like it was yesterday. (to complete the story of my Dad's involvement with Paul Hogan, after the movie became such a huge hit, my father's phone rang off the hook with TV stations that now wanted to run the Paul Hogan Show. And just when Dad was positioned to make a killing, Hogan's management pulled the plug. Said they didn't want to allow his old, sometimes risque show, to get a lot of attention. Something about a different image. We had the Paul Hogan show, but I don't think I remember "Hot legs". And I think I SHOULD! Still, it was a very funny show with quite a bit of that stuff; maybe it didn't stand out for me because of the music. (Well, that's my excuse.) MG -
Thanks so much for posting that, Brownie. MG

I don't like either but I'm intrigued - what's wrong with Rod's disco records? MG -
Fathead played the final shows at the Jazz Showcase on New Years Eve. I spoke to him and his wife Karen for some time before the show. I mentioned the new cd to David and he and Karen were very excited about it. David played a few tunes from it during the two shows. Here is an image from the finale. m~ On order - as ever without any need to listen. MG

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Well, since it's Bobby Bland's birthday today, I'm playing Sweet vibrations - MCA orig - this 1980 album is actually one of his best! Here's the man - MCA reissue Two steps from the blues - MCA reissue Ain't nothin' you can do - Duke ABC repressing I literally wore my first copies of the Duke LPs out! MG -
G A Russell noted in the vinyl thread that it's Bobby Bland's birthday today. And that reminded me of this This LP came out in 1980, one of several produced by MCA, inheritors of his contract with Duke. The other LPs weren't really too good - a couple of good tracks on each but nothing special. So, when I found a real cheap copy of this, I wasn't expecting very much. But it's one of Bland's best ever! And that means extraordinarily good. It was conceived as a tribute to Joe Scott, who had died a short while before. Bland's backed by strings but it all works. Even "Over the rainbow" is great! (With a nice George Bohannon solo) And there are great rhythm numbers like "Hollywood woman", and "Sweet vibrator". But, as ever, it's the blues that come through most. And there are some splendid ones on this, none more effective than Rufus Thomas' "Just because I leave, that don't mean I'm gone (Suspicious)". Oh yes, yes! MG

I've nothing against it except to say that I'm having great soul searching to confine myself to two 80 minute themed sets but that I really welcome the discipline. MG
