  7. It's looking a bit better this morning here. How are our continental European friends doing? MG
  8. Joe Fields has always filled the Prestige niche, where he worked before he started Cobblestone Records; then Muse; then HighNote/Savant/Fedora. Joe is my hero. In a couple of years, I'll probably have more albums on his labels than on Blue Note. MG
  9. Much though I respect your views, Soulstream - and I really DO - that is a bleeding terrible thing to say about a musician one admires. What you're saying is, "he wasn't good enough to communicate with the whole world". Well I don't believe it. MG

  11. So, did you find any music when you got the wrapping off? MG
  12. I think my vote goes to Clem's post/poem Clark Terry fucked my mother And lots of other words to that effect. But I can't remember what thread it was in. MG
  13. Yaya is a Mandinke name. I have a couple of albums by Yaya Bangoura (aka El Bango). And don't forget, one of the tracks on "Memphis to New York Spirit" is "The Mandingo". I didn't know about John being called Yaya before, but I can see it makes sense. MG
  14. Well, it's been very unpleasant here today, but nowhere near as bad as you folks. I feel for you. MG

  16. I wonder if the reason "Got a good thing goin'" came out before "Let 'em roll" was BN being bounced into it, because they were told that Patton and Green had recorded "The yodel" for Atlantic a few weeks earlier, with Grassella Oliphant. Ironically, Atlantic didn't issue "The grass is greener" until early 1968. MG
  17. Very short. "Got a good thing goin'" came out 10/66, only 8 months before "Let 'em roll". Maybe it didn't sell well. Soul stream would be better able to answer that, but I think the difference between "Let 'em roll" and "Certain feeling" is quite huge and indicates a lot of work on John Patton's part. There was a complete break with his former colleagues (partly because GG was out of it) and a radically different approach. Looking through the BN discography, there doesn't seem to be any notable hiatus between the two recording dates, except for about 5 weeks in late summer of 1967, when Alfred Lion actually retired. So I think it was down to John, feeling ready to record. MG
  18. Wow, I've never heard that!? These are the Blue Notes that were issued with the new mono/stereo sleeve design (post Liberty acquisition), before the issue of the 1967/68 BN illustrated catalogue. 4237 12/66 Unit structures 4240 12/66 Rough n tumble 4222 3/67 Cornbread 4248 3/67 Vibrations 4228 4/67 Bring it home to me 4250 4/67 Jody grind 4239 6/67 Let em roll 4246 6/67 Empty foxhole 4252 6/67 Sweet honey bee 4245 10/67 Like someone in love 4247 10/67 Symphony for improvisers 4253 10/67 Street of dreams 4255 10/67 I’m movin on 4263 10/67 Alligator bogaloo 4251 4/68 Easterly winds 4206 ? Contours BN also delayed the issue of "Street of dreams", which had been recorded before "I want to hold your hand" (released 7/66). MG

  20. Doesn't seem to be here. MG
  21. That's another for which there's no release date in Schwann. Schwann only used to quote release dates if the company provided a track listing - the date is technically a reference to the date on which the track listing appeared in earlier editions of the catalogue. Looks like there was a period when Prestige staff couldn't be asked to provide listings. MG
  22. I think Peterson was a bit earlier than the mid-eighties. That scene was definitely in heat in 1983 - when Pathe Marconi began to issue Blue Notes like Don Wilkerson's "Preach brother" - they were the first branch of EMI to decide that BN was commercial. Althugh I can't swear that I remember his name from that period, I'm sure he was one of the pioneers of the "Don Wilkerson is God" movement. And the scene was as eclectic then as now - I first heard of the Truthettes - a female gospel quartet - through that network. In those days, the scene was championed by the magazine "Blues & Soul", which gave great reviews to Soul Jazz albums by the likes of Ponder and McDuff. Trouble was, living in Cardiff, there was nothing like that scene here, so I never got a first hand taste of it. MG
  23. I've got a few R&B Proper boxes and they're nice. Sometimes they're complete - Dinah Washington and Wynonie "Mr Blues" Harris - sometimes they're nearly complete - Joe Turner. It doesn't REALLY matter. Going to get the Roy Brown later this year. MG
