Lou Donaldson- "At his best"

It really was Calvin. GG was only on "Musty Rusty". You're quite right Dan - I'd forgotten about "Rough house blues", arranged by Oliver Nelson. So, except for "Rough house blues" and the aquaducts and law and order, what you get with the Chess Bros stuff, is your regular Lou. MG -

Why limit our choices in dolphin hues (and music) to what we assume are the only choices? edit - these particular dolphins appear to exist in Asia. I've also seen pink dolphins personally, swimming in the Amazon River (them, not me!) . Well see, there you have it. Unlimited options in dolphin color, apparently, yet everybody just keeps on accepting freakin' green as the way to go, never considering all the other possibilities. THAT'S what I'm talking about! Steel grey. Same colour as most bridges. That's why it hasn't got a bridge - camouflaged by the dolphins. "Green" was picked in order to disguise the song's bridgelessness. "Bridge over troubled water" hasn't got a bridge, either (well, neither version that I own has). But "Mean streets-no bridges" has. And, to make matters worse, the Board has decided to stop notifying me of posts on this thread. I dunno what to make of it. Seems like the whole world's against me. MG

Lou Donaldson- "At his best"

I think it's one of the best. Calvin Newborn is on this one, which always makes an album special for me. Lou's albums made for the Chess Bros are all very good indeed. They don't have that sound that RVG gave musicians. And they feel more relaxed than BNs anyway. So you don't get a MAJOR kick out of them. What you get feels to me much more like Lou's regular thing, rather than something that had been rehearsed to perfection. Lou didn't record for Chess during his tenure at BN. Before "Sidewinder", every BN musician who got an album onto the pop charts left BN. According to Francis Wolff, this was because BN didn't pay royalties. It wasn't of concern to musicians, who were getting more upfront from BN than other companies, until they had a hit. So when they went to BN to ask where their royalties were (who reads a contract?) they were told to eff off. So they did. And Donald Byrd, who was one of them, started studying law, with the specific motivation of advising other musicians on such matters. After BN had been sold, Francis was able to attract Lou back on board, I guess when the Chess contract expired. MG -

Your collection is larger than mine, in that case... I'm just only getting into it! This one is really good. http://www.amazon.com/Kar-Boubacar-Traor/d...5315837-0791254 Since you are at it, check this beautiful disc by Rokia Traoré out: http://www.amazon.com/Wanita-Rokia-Traor%C...TF8&s=music For kora, this one by Toumani Diabate: http://www.amazon.com/Kaira-Toumani-Diabat...TF8&s=music and this one by Ballaké Sissoko: http://www.amazon.com/Deli-Ballak%C3%A9-Si...TF8&s=music are great. My favorite disc of West African music is a masterpiece by Jali Musa Jawara titled "Yasimika", sadly OOP: http://www.amazon.com/Yasimika-Jali-Musa-J...TF8&s=music This looks like a good compilation of West African music: http://www.amazon.com/Rough-Guide-Music-Ma...TF8&s=music Get some good West African music (thankfully, quite a bit is easily avilable these days) and throw this Rudd's "Malikool" nonsense away. If you like Djeli Moussa Diawara's "Yasimika", you'll like these other albums he has out in France. http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_ss_m/171-389...=11&Go.y=10 Note Jali Musa Jawara and Djeli Moussa Diawara are the English and French ways of spelling the same name. It makes searching for his records just that little bit more irritating I think Diawara has done more than anyone to develop the use of the kora in contemporary Guinean pop music. I love his stuff. Nah, you're talking about the obverse of Alexander's point. Metal WAS made for you - it just hurts your ears like 100 dogs. Now, Dan's point is that he can get Lowell, even though that wasn't made for him, but not some other stuff that also wasn't made for him. Don't mean a thing. There's hundreds of types of music that he doesn't get, most of which he hasn't ever heard. Dan would feel the same if, while he's listening to Lowell, I drove up with a Fatou Guewel Mbalax street parade blaring out. No one can get everything. Get what you can and get it good, I say. But don't try telling me that Islamic street Mbalax is crap! Tell me to shut up because I'm causing a nuisance. And tell the guy who's playing Rap the same (if you dare). MG

Are dolphins naturally green or blue? Never could get a handle on that. I always thought that Dolphin Street itself is green (as in it has trees and such) rather than being a street named after a Green Dolphin. Maybe they meant "Green-Dolphy Street"... I thought it was from a film with Sydney Greenstreet in it. MG

That's a very nice sleeve. I don't think I ever saw it in person, as it were, just poor reproductions. Who did the painting? I can't make out the signature. MG -

Yes! (That mean, yes you're right, Jim, not that it's better than being a plumber.) But it does depend. I've never been a plumber, but I have been a maintenance man in a laundry built in the 1890s and I can tell you, that really fucking sucked! But I've got a friend who's a plumber and loves it. And what you're saying, Jim, is the real reason I never kept up the alto lessons. I couldn't see myself as ever being good enough to do anything worthwhile, in my opinion. All that stuff about needing the money for a double bed for my missus and me is just a smartass remark (though it's also true). MG

From (failing) memory I say no. The remaining tracks are from a quartet by Q and the rhythm section. They were on the BN cd called "Easy Living". They might be elsewhere in the BN/Mosaic world. The titles were: I've Got A Crush On You Easy Living Nancy Chuck's correct. They were issued on "Easy living" BST84103 in 1987, with 3 other tracks from the session: Congo lament Que's pill See see rider Previously, the latter 3 tracks, together with 2 others from the same session BG's groove two I Q shuffle had been issued on LT1089 "Congo lament". The complete session was issued as "Easy living" CD CDP-7-46846. Those three tracks haven't been issued in any other way, as far as I know. MG
