Resurrecting old thread, which seems the right place for this stuff. Remember it takes a college degree to fly a plane but only a high school diploma to fix one. Reassurance for those of us, who fly routinely in our jobs, sounds familiar! After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humour. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a "P") and the solutions recorded (marked with an "S") by maintenance engineers. By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Auto pilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent. S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S: That's what friction locks are for. P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield. S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search. P: Aircraft handles funny.(I love this one!) S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious. P: Target radar hums. S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics. P: Mouse in cockpit. S: Cat installed. And the best one for last .................. P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer. S: Took hammer away from midget.

Milton Friedman dies at 94
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Huh? Guy Well, I think maybe he's relating this to what I saw of Friedman on TV in the early '80s. He was trying to explain, within the limits of an hour's programme, what his view of monetarism was, how it worked and what Governments should do. And in the end his recipe came down to controlling physical money - M1 - notes and coins in circulation. He may have been doing his ideas a disservice in the programme, of course. MG -

East coast Watts Tower. I like "FEAR NOT" at the top. Reminded me of "DON'T PANIC" on my BBC K7 set of "The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" radio shows. Can't find image on web, but the box looks just like the guide is supposed to look (which is the reason I got K7s rather than CDs). MG

Now reading...
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Finished Peter F Hamilton's "Judas unchained" last night. Towards the end, I couldn't put it down, so it kept me up 'til 1.40 am. Must be a good read, eh? It's certainly a LONG read. The two books are 2,379 pages together. Asimov would have made each volume into four, so I guess it's cheaper this way. Now starting one of my wife's books, which I think I bought for her in a second hand shop in Namibia a few years ago. "On safari", the autobiography of Armand Denis. In the late fifties, when we got our first TV, Armand and Michaela were THE TV wildlife programme pioneers. What they started, and popularised, has very much changed our perceptions of the world. My wife's comment was that it was amazing how little they knew about what they were doing. Well, we'll see. MG -

Who Have You Outlived?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to rostasi's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yep. Amazing how much he accomplished in that short time and how he changed music. For a Detroiter, that's an amazing statement. Soul developed between Billy Ward & the Dominoes' "Have mercy baby" in 1952 (Clyde McPhatter lead) and The Falcons' "I found a love" in 1962 (Wilson Pickett lead, plus Eddie Floyd, Sir Mack Rice and one of the 4 Tops' brother - the backing band later became the Ohio Players). Nothing that Otis, O V Wright, Carr or Aretha did after that took Soul further into church than "I found a love". (Soul is the classic instance of the innovators not being as good as some of those who followed.) MG PS the other members of the Falcons were Joe Stubbs (Eli's brother) and Ben Night. And the band in those days was known as "The Ohio Untouchables") -

Itunes already sells some albums that are not available as hard copies. Guy EMusic has a lot of OOP Universal stuff. But European customers can't buy it. GRRRRR! MG
