  2. I can just HEAR that statement being read out! I think Peter Cook would have done it perfectly in his E L Wisty voice. MG
  3. Craig Douglas Les McCann Frankie Vaughan
  4. My wife has been urging me to find a recording of an African choir singing that (a capella) for years. Do you know of any? Or even a football crowd... MG There are several good versions, including one before a rugby test match, to be found on U-Tube. This IMHO is the best .. featuring Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow40LQs0ue4 Thanks - was that Paul Simon on stage with them? MG
  5. After getting the Haruna Ishola CD yesterday, I dug out of my LP shelves Akanni Animashaun and his Apala Group - Akanni de alawiye orin - Shanachie (probably licensed from Nigerian firm) and, because my hand was in the right area, Fela Kuti - Gentleman - Creole orig UK issue Hugh Masekela - Home is where the music is - Blue Thumb orig UK issue in the impossibly ridiculous packaging. MG
  6. That's me - didn't realise it had gone. MG
  7. Your wish is my command: CLICK HERE. Thanks very much, Matthew. I'll try it tomorrow; it's almost bedtime here. MG

  9. Thanks Clem, but I flogged all but one of my Classical LPs in the early '70s, when I decided that I couldn't afford to pursue that kind of music as I'd have liked, as well as Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Ska, Reggae, and the different kinds of African music I was beginning to encounter. I STILL can't afford it! BTW, my wife's aunt was a mate of Ron Smith. Used to have a few of his Alkan recordings. I had quite a bit of Delius, too. V nice, particularly "SOngs of sunset". MG PS Daniel-Lesur's "Symphonie de danses" on Erato was one of my all time favourites. One I wish I hadn't flogged.
  10. Revisiting this thread from day 1, did you originally write "latex"? MG It's a Seinfeld reference. Hilarious sequence. Guy Ah, I saw one episode of that. MG
  11. OK - gone back to page 1 and see it's Firefox2. Would some kind and more competent person (than me) tell me how to get it, please? I assume I don't need anything else before I get Firefox? MG
  12. Yes it does! Just happened to me. Aha! Must therefore check how to turn it on. Gordblesherguv! MG
  13. Having heard Lou on records with Art Blakey and Brownie and really digging him I got "Natural Soul" and was underwhelmed. BTW is there a reason it's not included in the Mosaic? Four that I can think of offhand. It's later. It's with an organist (as was "Here 'tis", which comes between "Midnight sun" and "Gravy train" - and is going to be in the Baby Face Willette Select, I understand). It was a hit. It's been available on CD for some time and doesn't seem likely to be deleted. Oh, and you'll be getting Ronnie and Reggie round to show you the error of yer wayz on "Natural soul" MG

  15. The ArkivCD series is offering the classic Karajan recording http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album....p;album_group=8 It's surprising that DG would let this go OOP. I'll get the regular CD as long as it's still available. So how did you dig that one up, Claude? When I looked at the composers list, no mention of his name. MG
  16. I was thinking, as one does inevitably this week, about "Jazz on a summer's day". I got my Dad to take me to it, one Sunday, when I saw him in the last few years of his life. He thought it was good. He used to like a lot of the old Swing era singers who were still around. But my parents split when I was two, so I never knew my Dad very well; certainly not from that angle. My mother liked general pop music. Perry Como was her favourite. I bought a few of his albums in 1960, for something she could enjoy. I was astounded, however, when I brought my first Duke Ellington LP home, in 1960, and she said she'd seen him live in the '30s! But I wouldn't say her taste influenced me, not even as a teenaged reaction against it. MG
  17. Can I ask a basic question? What's the attraction of listening to music on shuffle? I can't see why I should let a machine choose what I listen to at any particular time. I don't get it. MG

  19. Though I can't afford Classical music as well as all the other stuff, Im underwhelmed, too. No Finzi No Honneger No Daniel-Lesur No Alkan No Schmidt Just the usual pop stuff. MG

  21. There's no material with Clifford Brown on the Donaldson Mosaic. The set includes these albums: Wailing with Lou - Blue Note 1545 (recorded in 1957) Swing and Soul - Blue Note 1566 (1957) Lou Takes Off - Blue Note 1591 (1957) Blues Walk - Blue Note 1593 (1958) Light-Foot - Blue Note 4053 (1958) LD + 3 - Blue Note 4012 (1959) The Time Is Right - Blue Note 4025 (1959) Sunny Side Up - Blue Note 4036 (1960) Midnight Sun - Blue Note LT-1028 (1960) Gravy Train - Blue Note 4079 (1961) Oh well, I've got it all then. 4 only on vinyl; the rest probably both. MG
  22. This is a really nice date recorded in two separate sessions in April and May, 1957, and released on RCA. Features Witherspoon with a nonette with Jay McShann, Ray Copeland or Emmett Berry, J.C. Higginbotham, Hilton Jefferson, Seldon Powell, Heywood Henry or Al Sears, Kenny Burrell, Gene Ramey, and Mousy Alexander. I have a 10-track CD of this released by RCA/BMG in 1994, but I want to get the Mosaic release for the extra cuts. Thanks Hank - explains why I never heard of it. I don't follow major labels. MG
  23. Haven't got any of the McShanns but I agree about the rest. And all the Junior Mances are great, too. MG
