The recent large increases in commodity prices are to some extent a function of their being priced in a rapidly depreciating U.S. dollar . That said , the last 5 years have seen an across-the-board rise in inflation-adjusted commodity prices as well , as China feeds the U.S. overconsumption that has been brought about by lax U.S. monetary policy . Historically however , shorter-term upward movements in real commodity prices such as the one currently underway , have never really come close to putting an end to the now 150-year trend of declining real commodity prices made possible by technological innovation . The fact that Chinese goods can be as cheap as they are in an era of rising commodity prices speaks to just how much of a cost advantage (primarily labor , but also regulatory ) the Chinese have vis-à-vis the United States , which is what Jim's initial post was pointing up . The price-deflation of manufactured goods resulting from this cost advantage isn't as great as it seems however given the poor quality of many Chinese goods .

Don't know about that , but he did make albums that were less than excellent . One that comes to mind is the one for Mode . Given the personnel , that is one dull record - the sub-30 minute playing time is a blessing ! I have tended to prefer Feldman's sideman appearances , and find his piano playing to be more enjoyably individual than his vibes work , so that may have something to do with my reaction to that album .

Counterfactual reasoning in this context is fallacious reasoning* . Moreover , even if the reasoning were sound , it wouldn't establish the desirability , let alone the necessity , of keeping decades-old music out of the public domain and in the hands of statutory monopolists . Historically , such statutory protection was intended to serve the interests of the public , not the copyright holders . Such is no longer the case , and we are poorer for it . *To understand the nature of the fallacy involved , see here. Chas, thanks. I just feel what I feel, that's the reality for me. I disagree with at least one of the conclusions above. I'm not preaching about it, just wish things were otherwise. You disagree with a least one of my conclusions , but feel it would be "preaching" to point out which one and why it's erroneous ? Is this , along with your , "I just feel what I feel" , evidence of misology , or am I just being eristic ?

Got that one recently and gave it a first spin yesterday - quite a ride! True, the solo material is great, but I quite enjoyed the strings date as well..... Fantasy dropped the ball with that reissue . In my judgment the solo record is more essential than the strings thing and deserved to be reissued in full . Why leave Hello Young Lovers off the CD ? It's the longest track on the LP , and one of the best . Yes , Jaki recorded the tune again at his Maybeck recital , but Byard fans will find much to savor in this earlier version . Fantasy also missed a chance to pay hommage to Jaki's sense of humor through use of the solo cover for their CD :

Ever Have To Sell Your Collection..........

Buddha collection ? There's some kind of irony in that.... It sucks to have to explain irony, but you'll have to in this case. I don't understand your comment. The irony arises from the fact that the Buddah stressed the need to eliminate desire , and a collection is nothing if not a manifestation of an extended period of single-minded desire . -
Donald Byrd with Strings -- Lunatic wrong info
Chas replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I wonder if the fact that Byrd has intonation problems on this recording tends to support Lonehill's 1957 recording date for the session over Lord's May/June 1959 date ? I have all of Byrd's recordings from 1959 , and can't recall ever hearing any intonation problems on them . -

I too share your enthusiasm for early Konitz . The Vogue material was later issued as part of a Prestige 12-incher , and is currently available on this French CD :http://www.amazon.com/Lee-Konitz-Bob-Brook.../dp/B000003EKU/ .

any important/interesting with or by Woody Shaw that's NOT on CD??
Chas replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
I think you'd like Azar Lawrence's first Prestige side from '74 . Woody's only on two tracks , and only solos on the the title cut , Bridge into the New Age , but the whole album's got that Tribe/Strata-East spiritual vibe . Too bad Azar's two later Prestige albums ( much like Patrice Rushen's ) went in a musically less-interesting , commercial direction . -

Do you have this one? I have always been curious about it - I have the other Mainieri Solid State LP. Like you , I've only got Journey Thru an Electric Tube , which IMO , is a record that in its best moments approaches Burton-Coryell territory , but one that , given the psych-rock vocalizing and fuzz guitar , I find that I'm not in the mood for all that often . Insight , being a quartet date , might cleave more closely to a Burton-Coryell dynamic and as such might be of greater interest to me , though I must admit to never really having been knocked out by Joe Beck's playing .

That Houston Person cover reminded me of this one :
