Seriously, this bothers me, too. I've been there, so I can relate. When things get tough, the priority of retaining an OOP Mosaic set is eclipsed by its cold, hard, dollar value. I didn't really need all of those big black boxes cluttering up my shelves anyway.

BTW, has anyone ordered the Jimmy Smith Village Gate or Stan Getz Jazz Giants discs from BMG? I got a couple of these discs from them in crappy jewel case half-ass versions. Others were in the digipacks you would find in stores. No rhyme or reason.

As a genre in my collection, the Indian Classical discs have the worst cover art by a mile.

Gopalnath is a monster player. Biggest bummer ever: He was playing in town the same weekend as Tinariwen and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. I was out of town in my friend's wedding. Aaah! Speaking of Carnatic saxophone music, have you had a chance to hear Prasant Radhakrishnan? He has some traditional discs and a couple with his jazz group Vidy-a.

I do this myself at home -- I go these buffer wheels and polishing compounds for my bench grinder at home: Caswell, Inc. Does a fine job. I buy scratched used discs cheap and put a shine back on em. There is a limit to what you can do, and one has to be careful to buy things that are not scratched on the wrong side!

And now this again. Wheew! Clever play on that album title. Is Brijbushan Kabra still with us? He would complete that group. If not, they could introduce another guitar player to round it out. There are many out there, anymore. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Debasish Bhattarchaya, etc.

There have been a ton of them at the Half Price Book stores, too. Picked up a nice one: Ben Webster - Complete 1943-1951 Small Group Recordings [3CD]

I had Good Move when it got reissued in the US, and I used to have Ike Quebec's Heavy Soul on LP. I just can't hang with the man's B3 tone. That vibrato reminds me in a bad way of church/funeral homes. I like the harder, more percussive edge that other players dial in with the instrument.

Seeing those covers on the back makes me think that there should be a Mosaic Select in there somewhere.

Thanks everyone! It was a nice birthday weekend, with the finale being the John Scofield trio at the Iowa City Jazz Festival. I got a pile of CDs for gifts -- thank the CD Gods for the Amazon wish list.

I just saw a review of a Cy Touff date for Delmark cut in 1981 but unissued until yesterday. I haven't heard it yet, but given my enthusiasm for his Pacific Jazz date, I will be buying.
