  1. I have a Sun Ra track from emusic that says it is 728 hours long. It is not. That would be a good cost per minute, if so.
  2. I need to nab that Ashley JSP set soon...
  3. Interesting to hear what those extra years adds to those songs. I love them both for their own charms. The 20s stuff sounds rough-n-rambunctious, but the 60s is more contemplative and world-weary. Sugar Baby is one of my all-time faves. I think Frisell covers it on his "The Willies" release.
  4. Maybe it was your copy I found at Laurie's bookstore on 9th and Nicollet Mall. I wonder what Jim was charging on it? He was way overpriced on a lot of things... It very well could have been -- can't remember where I sold it. Things are WAY overpriced there; run-of-the-mill OJCs will run upwards of $20. From what I recall I paid $5 for it at least ten years ago. I have only been here for about 8, so it must have been a different copy.
  5. Hamell on Trial is a hoot. There are some live recordings up on archive.org that made me smile. I am headed to see Jack Rose the guitar player in St. Paul tonight.

    Miles From India

I d/l this from emusic last night, listened on the bus this morning. I am an Indian music fanatic, and 70s Miles is some of my favorite music of all time, but this left me ambivalent. Maybe my liking of those two things puts me at a disadvantage when evaluating a project like this... For one, it is always hard to know where to put a sitar in the mix. It has one of those sonorities that can easily get lost; too low in the mix and you risk losing those resonances that make it so distinctive. As a result, it gets pushed higher in the mix than what would sound natural [or what i would perceive as natural in most other contexts, classical-wise.] I was hoping for a harder edge on some of the pieces, too. That is one of the things I love about Miles' 70s output -- that frenetic urgency. I find that same intensity at the apex of some of my favorite Carnatic performances, but was missing from this.

    Miles From India

Wasn't the word that there would be a release around that? I remember reading that here, IIRC. I am going to add this to my emusic list tonight!
  9. OMFG I am never going to get to hear this. Will Phil and Bobby get the hint and put out an un-numbered 2nd edition of this already? Aaaagh!
  10. I had a bunch of these at one point. One funny memory I have of this series: I was working at the public radio station, sitting the board while A Prairie Home Companion was on air. I was listening to the Bernstein disc with the more modern pieces from the station's record library. The piece in particular was Ligeti's Atmospheres. I THOUGHT I was listening to it in audition mode, but it turns out it was going out over the air ON TOP OF Mr. Keillor. I got a phone call from a listener that asked if there was some kind of problem; I said, "We are having some technical difficulties."
  11. sweet!
  12. This just arrived from BMG -- can't wait to turn it up at home! Disc 5 sounds good enough to these ears; can't wait to hear 1 & 2 with even better fidelity.
  13. I saw that at the JazzLoft site. Holy cats, that is a lot of material.
  14. Well, today I feel a little more justified in my dislike of Steve Miller.
  15. On the way, for free: Common - Finding Forever Coltrane - Giant Steps [was waiting for the Atlantic box, but will get this for now] Ben Webster - Soulville Pharoah Sanders - Elevation And from the clearance section, $1.99 ea: Hilary Hahn - Bach violin concertos John Adams - Road Movies
  16. I was getting work done all day long.
  17. Good thing I just got more shelves from Ikea! :rsmile:
  18. on the flip side of this is that it's a far weaker overall market for CD sales than it was in 1993, and that this will be a major jump in terms of material for Mosaic. The overall market, for sure, but for niche productions like this? yes. I suppose the enthusiasm of those reading this thread might not equate with the record buying public. Very true.
  19. Those hatOLOGY reissues of Braxton's material went OOP PDQ, IIRC. Those were issues of 2,000 copies? Basel 1977? Dortmund 1976? These are all in that sweet spot that this box would cover.
  20. I have his "Passing Measures" disc, and enjoy it greatly. Pulitzer, though?

  22. I just discovered something as an add-on for Firefox; it is something that will rip all mp3s in an M3U playlist. You might find this interesting if you peruse archive.org... dig it
  23. Mr. Weiss is a super-fast shipper, which makes me very happy!
  24. I think he is playing Art Taylor's drum kit.
