  1. Truth!!!
  2. Still drinking from the Dizzy cup ... Disc VI.
  3. Yep. If you are not on FB, this is what I would suggest in terms of sending feedback. I had a chance to chat with Sue at the Mingus HS Competition. Lovely, gracious woman. I only wish she had made this offering public before meeting her. I would have lobbied hard for the 6 CD Mosaic treatment in person.
  4. From Charles Mingus Facebook page: NEVER BEFORE HEARD MINGUS RECORDINGS SOON TO BE RELEASED!! Part 2 of Mingus's 1964 Town Hall Concert with Eric Dolphy and Part 2 of Tyrone Guthrie concert "My Favorite Quintet." (History: Charles and I ran out of money after releasing the first half of these concerts in 1965. The tapes have been in storage ever since.) The plan is to make this music available digitally-- and perhaps in a Mosaic box set produced by Michael Cuscuna-- if there is enough interest. Please let us know! --Sue Mingus My link Maybe others know additional details ...
  5. Ummm.... "tome", not "tomb" is what you meant, right? "Tomb" seems about right. Haha! You both are correct ... when you are 300 pg into a book and have yet to put any kind of meaningful dent into it, both "tomb" and "tome" are appropriate.
  6. Well said. Blues People is next up on my list ... after I finish Cohen's tomb, Ellington's America.
  7. I had to good fortune and pleasure to listen to the Benny Golson Quartet at the Jazz Standard (NYC) last night. If I am that lucid and spry at 80+ years young, then I will have lived a wonderful life. Enjoyable set which included a couple of standards, Domingo and Autumn Nocturne. Terrific stories. BG is so gracious. I approached him and shook his hand. He thanked me for coming out to listen. Does not get much better than that.
  8. This a great topic. Thanks for asking the question. Looking forward to additional answers.
  9. Rufus Harley, Complete Atlantic Recordings. Disc 2.
  10. Like an old friend, Herbie Nichols is there ... disc 3
  11. Trying to scare up a sitter for the weekend. No luck so far. If not Lou, I'll see Benny Golson when he comes to JS in a couple of weeks.
  12. I should hope so. However, if it were not someone with your avatar and handle, one could also assume you were talking about Konitz. I understand what Delightfulee is saying, as I have been following the same trajectory myself, staring with all things Lee Morgan,, then--and I thank Lee Morgan for opening the vistas-- moving further out, eventually getting deep into New Thing music, finally this year actually "dusting off" those hard bop recordings and bringing them back into rotation. I can't say with the same infatuation, but certainly with listening pleasure. Ha!! Just seeing this now. Loves me some Lee!
  13. European Echoes ... the Trio's synergy is sublime.
  14. Played his Complete Blue Note Sessions by Mosaic last week ... amazing, amazing work. Can see myself spending more time getting into those sessions well into the New Year.
  15. Historically, Miles/Bird/Blakey/Lee/Trane/Mingus/Monk. In 2011 I made more of a concerted effort to dust off my hard bop (Mobley, Donaldson, Hubbard, Golson/Farmer, McLean and really all Blue Note recordings). Ended the year spending more time with the New Thing and will likely continue exploring in that direction.
  16. Thematically, I'm closing the year with a bop revival ... earlier today - Bud Powell and The Quintet. Right now, The Fats Navarro Story. Will in all likelihood continue the bop theme all weekend.
  17. The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Herbie Nichols. Disc 2.
  18. WELCOME Delightfulee!!! I too followed the forum for a long time before joining. You'll find this a good place, lot's of passionate music fans and knowledgeable musicians here. I am listening to Duke Ellington Complete Capitol Recordings Disk 3. I think it's interesting to hear the band without Johnny Hodges (who accounted for a lot of the beauty and soulfulness of the band), Russell Procope gets in a great solo in Lady Be Good, it's astonishing actually. Duke's piano playing is very strong here. As is the trumpet section, it's stacked! All in all, a difficult time for Duke and his men, but the music is still quality Ellingtonia. Thank you, Jazz Nut. The knowledge of and reverence to the art on this forum is inspiring.
