  1. He contributed to the greater good of life. His was a life fully lived. RIP.
  2. Charlie Parker, The Complete Live Performances on Savoy. Disc 4
  3. Disc 1 - Praying with Eric. Disc 7
  4. This set is rising to become one of my favorites. Amazing. Disc 2
  5. Rondo is a loose canon.
  6. ... and the congregation collectively shouted, "AMEN."
  7. Disclaimer: Dolphy is among my top 3 favorite artists. With that disclaimer in mind, I actually welcome the McPherson & Hillyer combo and try to appreciate them with different ears. In my mind, nothing compares to Mingus' classic sextet and it's quite possible Mingus felt the same way. Which is why I am pleased there is very little selection overlap between the Dolphy group and McPherson/Handy/Hillyer group in the set. That said, there does seem to be slightly less enthusiasm for the latter (could be a "sound quality" issue too), but I've enjoyed the entire set including the later material.
  8. Yes, this is my first time hearing this material, and from all the past reviews of the gig, I was expecting something of a disspirited mess. It's anything but, and upon initial listenings seems to be a "deeper" Mingus vibe than the previous year's celebrated performance. Definitely more "brooding", maybe that's just a factor of the instrumentation. Anyway, very happy to hear this, and good to have it to now play in conjunction with Music Written for... Well said.
  9. There's a ton of stuff in Bill's archive. It's just a matter of getting some of it out in a way that does it "right." Sunny's music is strewn about on too many different labels and I've heard a fair amount of live stuff that was definitely on the "miss" side of things, so it would be a challenge to put together a comprehensive set documenting his work. +1 for Marion Brown and Sunny Murray.
  10. Kelley suggests that Monk and Wright developed a friendly mentor-mentee relationship in Monk's waning (public performing) years. Quick search does not reveal a great deal about Wright since the early 1970s.
  11. Hopefully I finish the Monk bio by Kelley this weekend and can revisit the Pullman book.
  12. Agreed on the last two. Cathartic for me.
