  1. Not sure when, or if, I will get out of this bag ...
  2. I own most, if not all, of the released output from Mingus and still find the 30 min. 'Fables of Faubus' (on Disc 4) even beyond Mingus' usual high level (including Great Concert). This 'Fables' includes many choice quotes, but given the context of the piece, the subtlety drawn from "Lift Every Voice and Sing' (the Black National Anthem) vs 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' is masterful.
  3. Straight from the horse's mouth (and I'm paraphrasing): "Now that the sets come shipped from a third-party warehouse with pre-printed numbers, there is absolutely no correlation between time of order placement and number received. As a matter of fact, even if you were the first to order a particular set, you could still end up with # 2000. The numbers are only there to signify that the sets are limited editions." I guess this is bad news for all the ebay sellers out there! Anyone reselling the Mingus set should be shot. A masterpiece.
  4. Wow. Did a random search and just fell into this thread! Amazing topic. What receives the most airtime in my home of late: John Carter / Bobby Bradford - Mosaic Select is the truth and light. Albert Ayler - Holy Ghost Sam Rivers - Mosaic Plan to spend more time with Art Ensemble, Bill Dixon (Black Saint), Threadgill (Mosaic). I put Complete Trane at VV on the avant-garde outside looking in and have all of Ornette's Atlantic singles. In reality all other titles are on the backburner until the recent Mingus Mosaic is fully digested. Will take awhile.
  5. Thanks. This was great.
  6. For me, it begins and ends with Bird.
  7. RIP
  8. Stretch on Disc 2. Amazing.
  9. This arrived today!
  10. Nothing makes me happier than when I see a box from 425 Fairfield Ave., Suite 421, Stamford, CT ... The Tolliver has arrived.
  11. It'll do more than that. Excited for this set as it is all live performance, but you all know this already.
  12. Appreciate all the suggestions. I've read a fair amount and really found As Serious As Your Life one of the more engrossing, satisfying histories on the subject. Wilmer's work is outstanding.
  13. Recently finished reading Valerie Wilmer's book and enjoyed it, particularly the discussion of the then lesser known lights. Can folks recommend others along similar lines ... exploring new thing, 70s loft scene, etc. (or link to a previous thread on the topic that I could not find). Thank you in advance.
