  1. I often used to notice that, nice and sunny in London but a drive up the M1 found Sheffield chilly and grey. The cherry blossoms are getting ready for their debut later this week maybe. This is what they look like a few minutes from my home, at the back of Toho film studio.
  2. Agreed, and from the same era This Sporting Life. Both outstanding films.
  3. Too many to list. Howards End The Remains Of The Day Lean's Oliver Twist , Great Expectations and Passage To India The Exorcist , as previously noted. Solaris The Godfather LA Confidential Master & Commander Psycho Double Indemnity etc etc
  4. The final part of The Jinx. A classic, meticulously well made documentary.
  5. Thanks for the recommendation. Actually I have a PDF copy of The Sleepwalkers already loaded on my tablet and hope to get round to reading it in the not too distant future.
  6. I think there's a fair chance we might hear more from him on WW1. He's covered WW2 extensively so The Great War offers a wealth of writing opportunity. The tangled prelude is clearly explained with background sketches of the mood and mind set, the ulterior motives and naive assumptions laid out convincingly without being long winded. The parts covering the clashes between Austria and Serbia are very interesting and make a change from the usual thread following developments in the west. That's as far as I've got so far. My grandad was a regimental musician and was involved in the Somme among other campaigns. Like others he was reluctant to talk about his time there but one tale completely chilled me and comes back to haunt me even now. He took a bullet through his helmet, grazing the top of his head. The implications of the shooter aiming half a centimetre lower are very difficult to get my head round. Just one of the many reasons I'm interested in military history.
  7. The Japanese call this time of year sankan shion, literally three days cold, four days mild and it's quite accurate. Today slate grey skies and cold with morning rain. About 4C.
  8. 1913 : In Search Of The World Before The Great War - Charles Emmerson Fascinating up to now.
  9. Hawks On Hawks - Joseph McBride
  10. He's over seventy so even though his injuries are described as non life threatening, the recovery process will be long. I'm five years his junior but a mere double fractured wrist was a quite serious impediment for several months. I wish him all the best for a speedy return to health.
  11. I'd love to hear her but it isn't working for me. Abode is up to date, version 16.0.0.305.
  12. Yeah, it's like TV crack, incredibly addictive. This show has both changed and remained consistently good over the last two seasons. I've watched all seasons on broadcast. Indeed, the the level of the show has remained constant throughout, no small achievement. I've been a fan since it began.
  13. RIP Spock, the true spirit of Star Trek. http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/feb/27/leonard-nimoy-spock-star-trek-career-appreciation
  14. Just finished this one myself last week. Very easy to read, as was the previous volume about the war in North Africa. I'm now awaiting delivery of the third and final volume about the invasion and liberation of Europe. He's an excellent writer.... 'Crusade', his account of The Gulf War is also very good. I'm on the last few pages of The Day Of The Battle and will start The Guns At Last Light today. He's a good writer, plenty of detail and anecdotes and a clear narrative type drive that doesn't tire the reader by straying into academia.
  15. The Shield is great. It manages to keep up the level of tension right through to the satisfying and well crafted end. Writing a good conclusion is something that seems to evade a lot of long running series but this show succeeds admirably.
  16. Did you ever read his first one about the War in North Africa? That was quite good. Yes, I've just finished it and continued straight into The Day Of The Battle.
