Robin Rusch and Thomas Heberer (ICP Orch.)

God damn. I was expecting a typical marriage announcement - two, maybe three paragraphs at most. I could read 'happily ever after' stories like that all day long. (Well, IF they involved people as interesting as that, anyway. ) -
They are MORE MODERN than many contemporary bands. Amen to that!! ...and Gerald Wilson too, for that matter.

Didn't realize that, thanks! I just moved the content I had posted to the Nica thread.

Here it is again... Just stumbled on this on Youtube (via Reddit) -- an 80-minute documentary about Nica of Nica's Dream (Pannonica Rothschild de Koenigswarter) Click: Storyville The Jazz Baroness The Youtube description says... This relates to this thread (Who knew this? ), but I didn't want to bury it there where folks wouldn't necessarily see it. (I'm on a PC without any sound, so I'll have to check this out in a couple weeks when I get to DC. FYI, I'll be off the Internet the whole week of June 6th.)

Mingus on Candid (especially with Ted Curson)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Well, I guess I'd be interested in knowing the sound quality of the 3-disc "gray market" version too then. Not a fan of gray-markets of studio dates, but if the sound is that lousy on the legit versions... -
Sam's current Florida big band is outrageous, based on this 2006 release: Sam Rivers - Rivbea Orchestra: Aurora They're also the subject of a forthcoming Mosaic Select due out next month...

Somebody with both, please check. That'd be interesting to know if their source isn't the actual release.

Jim, I'll hit you up in a few months when we get our house sold. It goes on the market in 2 weeks, and I'll be in DC two weeks from today! (So much work to do between now and then. Note: I'll be totally off-line for the week of June 6th.) -
Whoa... -- the Insane Clown Posse has an orchestra? What miracles do not cease?

Image came through here the 2nd time I looked at this thread (but not the first).

To date, I've never been much for vocal jazz -- except for the arguably weird "heavy small group, with chorus" genre -- which I do rather like, and also the vocals some oddball 70's 'Strata East' and 'Nimbus' type things. Also, June Tyson, with Sun Ra. But, I do have a tiny smattering of things with Abbey Lincoln, that have begun to grow on me over the years, primarily "We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite" and she sings on one cut of Max Roach's "It's Time". (And maybe something else I can't remember at the moment.) So, what are my next TWO recommended purchases for Ms. Lincoln? (And with my recent downsizing, I gotta limit myself to two things at most - at least for now.) Also, isn't she on one or two things with/by Eric Dolphy? - seems like I've heard one or two cuts, ages ago. I'm leaning towards stuff by her in the 60's, but wondering if she had any killer dates in the 70's as well?

Mingus on Candid (especially with Ted Curson)

Yeah, no plans to buy the copycat here. I avoid that kind of stuff if at all possible (unless it's otherwise never-available live stuff, then all bets are off. ). -

So what are all the albums that make up the Mosaic? -
Is this: "The Complete 1960 Nat Hentoff Sessions" -- is this a straight-up copy of the Mingus complete Candid set on Mosaic (which I don't have, and am seeing here looks nearly the same)? I'm especially interested in the sessions with Ted Curson (which appears to be all of disc #1 & #2). So, what's the best way to get the material with Curson on individual CD's? (Since the set I linked to appears to be gray-market, and I'd rather not get it unless I have to.) I first saw mention of this set on another board. Here's what I have to go on (from the post on the other board)... Also, NOTE, there are two extra tracks on the gray-market release - is Curson on either/both of them?? What is their origin??

Holy crap. My wife sent me this e-mail to me on Monday (she's already in DC, but had talked with one of her former coworkers back here in Kansas Kansas City). We both dismissed her former co-workers estimate of "in the 1000's", but now I'm beginning to wonder. -

Coffee, though I came to it rather late. Didn't like either at all until the year after I got my BA when I was 23 -- on a trip to Barcelona, where I got to enjoy Café con leche for the first time -- which is about a 50/50 mix of very strong coffee, and foamed milk. Then, I began to like coffee, now and then, but only in the evening maybe once a week, as a desert drink. It's only been in the last 5 years (when I was almost 40) that my wife and I even bought a coffee maker for ourselves, and started making coffee in the mornings most days. I still don't care much for tea. I can drink iced tea if I have to, but I pretty much can't stand hot tea. Now, I do rather like the milk-based tea-drink Chai, either hot or cold.

I bought a couple Ornette CD's from somebody on-line, and what I got in the mail today were really high-quality CDR's (semi-uggh!) I say "semi-", because they're both in remarkably high-quality packaging, with full-color printing on the face of the CD itself(!). The discs were "Of Human Feelings" and "Opening the Caravan of Dreams", and although I got ripped off - I guess I didn't pay all that much for them ($12 each), and given their rarity, I guess I should have been a little more "buyer beware" in the first place. Anyway, of all things, the copy of "Of Human Feelings" has a bonus track: "Dancing in Your Head" from Jamaaladeen Tacuma's 1984 album "Renaissance Man" - which I had never heard before. Question: Is that the ONLY Jamaaladeen Tacuma track that Ornette plays on from the 80's and/or 90's (or 00's)? (I realize there's a MUCH more recent Tacuma album that Ornette is on (just in the last year or two, the most recent Ornette thus far released, in fact). But other than that, is this one track the ONLY thing released under Tacuma's name, that Ornette's on?? It's a really nice track (its drum machine doesn't bother me, I'm afraid), and it fits in well with "Of Human Feelings", actually -- and expands the date to a more respectable album-length affair too. Amazingly, the packaging that came with this thing has all the personnel listed for both "Of Human Feelings" AND also for the bonus track (even identifying where it came from). The tray-card has graphics on both side (visible through the clear tray-case), everything looks like a million bucks (including the discs themselves). Hell, "Of Human Feelings" includes ALL the credits on the original album too (something like 15 in all). But no UPC codes (which was the first giveaway). But, I have to say that I almost don't feel all that ripped off (even if I would have MUCH preferred legit copies, of course - cuz I really hate burns). Oh, my other question: Am I right in assuming there never was and never has been any "with that bonus track" CD issue of "Of Human Feelings"?? I know the date came out in Japan on CD (I've even seen somebody else's copy once even -- without any bonus tracks). BTW, I imagine for dates like this (that are near impossible to find), this will become more common.

Been listening to Kenton - "City of Glass" a whole lot the last week (the CD reissue of most/all(?) of Bob Graettinger's compositional output) -- and for the first time (after YEARS of trying), I'm really starting to dig it. Is this all the Graettinger there is out there? Any notable recordings of his material, beyond the Kenton I have on the one CD?
