Mingus on Candid (especially with Ted Curson)

So what are all the albums that make up the Mosaic? -
Is this: "The Complete 1960 Nat Hentoff Sessions" -- is this a straight-up copy of the Mingus complete Candid set on Mosaic (which I don't have, and am seeing here looks nearly the same)? I'm especially interested in the sessions with Ted Curson (which appears to be all of disc #1 & #2). So, what's the best way to get the material with Curson on individual CD's? (Since the set I linked to appears to be gray-market, and I'd rather not get it unless I have to.) I first saw mention of this set on another board. Here's what I have to go on (from the post on the other board)... Also, NOTE, there are two extra tracks on the gray-market release - is Curson on either/both of them?? What is their origin??

Holy crap. My wife sent me this e-mail to me on Monday (she's already in DC, but had talked with one of her former coworkers back here in Kansas Kansas City). We both dismissed her former co-workers estimate of "in the 1000's", but now I'm beginning to wonder. -

Coffee, though I came to it rather late. Didn't like either at all until the year after I got my BA when I was 23 -- on a trip to Barcelona, where I got to enjoy Café con leche for the first time -- which is about a 50/50 mix of very strong coffee, and foamed milk. Then, I began to like coffee, now and then, but only in the evening maybe once a week, as a desert drink. It's only been in the last 5 years (when I was almost 40) that my wife and I even bought a coffee maker for ourselves, and started making coffee in the mornings most days. I still don't care much for tea. I can drink iced tea if I have to, but I pretty much can't stand hot tea. Now, I do rather like the milk-based tea-drink Chai, either hot or cold.

I bought a couple Ornette CD's from somebody on-line, and what I got in the mail today were really high-quality CDR's (semi-uggh!) I say "semi-", because they're both in remarkably high-quality packaging, with full-color printing on the face of the CD itself(!). The discs were "Of Human Feelings" and "Opening the Caravan of Dreams", and although I got ripped off - I guess I didn't pay all that much for them ($12 each), and given their rarity, I guess I should have been a little more "buyer beware" in the first place. Anyway, of all things, the copy of "Of Human Feelings" has a bonus track: "Dancing in Your Head" from Jamaaladeen Tacuma's 1984 album "Renaissance Man" - which I had never heard before. Question: Is that the ONLY Jamaaladeen Tacuma track that Ornette plays on from the 80's and/or 90's (or 00's)? (I realize there's a MUCH more recent Tacuma album that Ornette is on (just in the last year or two, the most recent Ornette thus far released, in fact). But other than that, is this one track the ONLY thing released under Tacuma's name, that Ornette's on?? It's a really nice track (its drum machine doesn't bother me, I'm afraid), and it fits in well with "Of Human Feelings", actually -- and expands the date to a more respectable album-length affair too. Amazingly, the packaging that came with this thing has all the personnel listed for both "Of Human Feelings" AND also for the bonus track (even identifying where it came from). The tray-card has graphics on both side (visible through the clear tray-case), everything looks like a million bucks (including the discs themselves). Hell, "Of Human Feelings" includes ALL the credits on the original album too (something like 15 in all). But no UPC codes (which was the first giveaway). But, I have to say that I almost don't feel all that ripped off (even if I would have MUCH preferred legit copies, of course - cuz I really hate burns). Oh, my other question: Am I right in assuming there never was and never has been any "with that bonus track" CD issue of "Of Human Feelings"?? I know the date came out in Japan on CD (I've even seen somebody else's copy once even -- without any bonus tracks). BTW, I imagine for dates like this (that are near impossible to find), this will become more common.

Live Blog: Tornado kills 116 in Joplin, Missouri -
Been listening to Kenton - "City of Glass" a whole lot the last week (the CD reissue of most/all(?) of Bob Graettinger's compositional output) -- and for the first time (after YEARS of trying), I'm really starting to dig it. Is this all the Graettinger there is out there? Any notable recordings of his material, beyond the Kenton I have on the one CD?

The author of the original blog post has quite a few jazz postings (84 in all!), all visible HERE. Lots of good stuff. (Keep hitting the "older entries" button at the bottom of each page from this search.) -
Excellent discographies!! Thanks for those. Numerous album covers I'd never seen, and fairly expansive session data.

Unbelievable destruction. This flickr slideshow just takes your breath away. There had been low-level tornadoes 100 miles around Kansas City Saturday night (but nothing of any significance, though lots of warnings). I was at a club last night (Sunday) - and had no idea about Joplin until I got home around Midnight. Death toll currently 89, and is expected by many exceed 100 (update: 116 reported dead as of 4pm Monday). I read somewhere this morning that it may have been the most destructive tornado in the US since the early 1950's (in terms of loss of life - was the metric I think they based that on). Upwards of 70% of the town significantly affected with damage, and something like 25% to 30% has been totally destroyed. Not a tiny town either - Joplin is over 50,000 in population. Some other photos and coverage... Detailed story from the local Joplin paper: Storm descends on Joplin Local authorities fear death toll could eclipse 100 Kansas City Star photos (81): HERE, just click on the photo itself to advance. Edit: General flickr slideshow of everything matching "joplin tornado 2011": HERE Joplin is about 150 miles south of Kansas City.

Hank Mobley's "Slice of the Top" is another 'all arranged by Pearson" outing, and arguably one of Hank's finest dates. What about Hank's "Third Season"?? - did Pearson arrange that date too?? (I'm 1,000 miles from my CD's, or I'd check myself). Those are my two favorite Hank dates, in large measure because of the superb arranging - some of the finest in the entire BN catalog.

Saw THIS blog post linked to from a Reddit thread, and thought I'd ask here. I can update the Reddit thread with any conclusions we might come to, and I'll invite the OP of that thread to join us. EDIT: Pretty interesting blog overall, with a lot of wide-ranging topics. Couple more music related here and here, but well worth exploring beyond those, IMHO.

Haven't had the chance to read the book yet, but that CD is quite nice.

The two Big Band dates are pretty sweet, especially those versions of the two Chick tunes: "Straight Up and Down" and "Tones for Joan's Bones".

Ok Chewy Here it is.Nows the time to reveal myself to you and others.Duke Pearson was my uncle. My mothers only brother. She is his only remaining living relative from his immediate family.Yes we were close, very close.More like father and son than nephew and uncle. He took me everywhere with him.I grew up digging his music from an early age.As well as many other jazz artist. But those on the Blue Note label was and still are some of my favorites of all time. When he was with Blue Note.I had the experience to see and hear hot wax hot off the press. The pic that you refer to,im not quite sure about myself.Theres nothing on the back of it.But I can tell you that one of the guys is Kenny Dorham, and probably Leo Wright.Yes I do have tons of stuff.Memoarabillia, pics, tapes, photos, and some music charts. Things that I dont even know what to do with ! I have saved all this stuff since his passing, augaust 4th 1980.I loved my uncle and love him for what he did for a living. Through him,i was able to meet some of the greats(or more famous) like Dizzy,Lee Morgan,Ella,Ron Carter,Donald Byrd just to name a few.Uncle Duke was a real cool cat.He was fun to be around and always kept us kids laughing whenever he was around. His song Jeannine was written for one of my cousins who just called as I was typing this post.Uncle Duke said that she had the prettiest brown eyes that he had ever seen. And thats how the song came about. My users name is ready rudy. And Im not nicknamed that becaues of uncle Duke recording Ready Rudy, named for the recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder.I was nicknamed that because one of my brothers use to play with Little Richard (lol ) Thats another story for another time.Im only a person thats trying to help keep uncle Duke leagcy alive.Im not looking for glory, money or fame.He was very special to me.And theres not a day that goes by that I dont think about him.Although he died young, his music lives on in me and those that loved him and his music. My Spidey senses are tingling.

Best consult a solicitor before saying anything, about anything at all - lest you then require the services of a barrister as well. Indubitably.
