Good chance it'll be accessible after today here: http://www.google.com/logos/, though whether it's still fully functional there, I'm not 100% sure.
-
Maybe I was dreaming this, but wasn't there also a "Herbie Handcock" screw-up on some BN CD reissue sometime in the last decade?
-
That's certainly gripping.

Any chance this group might be down in Washington DC or Baltimore at some point in the future?? I would absolutely LOVE to see them sometime.

Lunceford, Tolliver and Rivers sound samples
Rooster_Ties replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Don't know much about the Wildflowers box, but the first couple Amazon reviews seems to say it was originally 5-LP's of material recorded in the 70's. The new Rivers Select is all new recordings from 2008 & 2009. -
Lunceford, Tolliver and Rivers sound samples

Especially looking forward to the updated sound on the Tolliver set. The Charley reissue of Tolliver's "Impact" has always been one of THE weirdest sounding discs I've ever heard. I haven't listened to "Impact" in years, so I can't remember the details -- but frankly, I remember it being almost as bad as Stanley Cowell "Brilliant Circles" (although not 'bad' in the same way). Those Tolliver big-band dates are killer. And Sam Rivers' recent Florida big band date "Aurora" (from 2006) can be sampled at CDBaby.com* for a better idea of what that group can do. I've been calling them a 'Schoenbergian' big band with James Brown's rhythm section for a few years now -- and I was pleased to see the promo copy** for the Rivers set mentions the James Brown influence too!! *funny, the board won't let me link to it without generating a server error. Go to CDBaby.com, search on Sam Rivers, and it's the album called "Aurora". **Won't let me link to the Mosaic page with the promo copy, without the same server error. -
Wolfgang's vault has video of Miles at Tanglewood 1970
Rooster_Ties replied to medjuck's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Bought a 4th or 5th generation dub of this concert on VHS back around 1992 or '93. Good stuff! Exciting to have back then. Think I have a grey-market CD of it too, iirc. The details from Miles Ahead. -
Hell yeah, me too!

I vaguely remember a bad CC screwing up part of the rest of my exhaust system on a car I had 15-20 years ago. Can't remember the details, but I think something broke off and went further downstream - so I probably had to also get the exhaust pipe from the CC back to the muffler replaced (in addition to getting a new muffler, though I think I already needed a new muffler anyway).

Blue Note Releases (Not Reissues): 90's and Beyond?
Rooster_Ties replied to Justin V's topic in Artists
I think all of Greg Osby's leader-dates from the period with with Jason Moran are superb -- pretty much everything from 1997-2002. Not solely because Moran was in his band, but they were a case where the sum was greater than the parts. (I look forward to the day when they reunite on record.) Moran's first 3 or maybe 4 leader-dates are also stone classics, IMHO (though I've taken a bit less of a shine to his releases since those first 3 or 4). Mark Shim's two Blue Note dates were great too. -

God damn. I was expecting a typical marriage announcement - two, maybe three paragraphs at most. I could read 'happily ever after' stories like that all day long. (Well, IF they involved people as interesting as that, anyway. ) -
They are MORE MODERN than many contemporary bands. Amen to that!! ...and Gerald Wilson too, for that matter.

Didn't realize that, thanks! I just moved the content I had posted to the Nica thread.

Here it is again... Just stumbled on this on Youtube (via Reddit) -- an 80-minute documentary about Nica of Nica's Dream (Pannonica Rothschild de Koenigswarter) Click: Storyville The Jazz Baroness The Youtube description says... This relates to this thread (Who knew this? ), but I didn't want to bury it there where folks wouldn't necessarily see it. (I'm on a PC without any sound, so I'll have to check this out in a couple weeks when I get to DC. FYI, I'll be off the Internet the whole week of June 6th.)

Mingus on Candid (especially with Ted Curson)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Well, I guess I'd be interested in knowing the sound quality of the 3-disc "gray market" version too then. Not a fan of gray-markets of studio dates, but if the sound is that lousy on the legit versions... -
Sam's current Florida big band is outrageous, based on this 2006 release: Sam Rivers - Rivbea Orchestra: Aurora They're also the subject of a forthcoming Mosaic Select due out next month...
-
Somebody with both, please check. That'd be interesting to know if their source isn't the actual release.

The Spring 2011 organissimo Forum Fundraiser

Jim, I'll hit you up in a few months when we get our house sold. It goes on the market in 2 weeks, and I'll be in DC two weeks from today! (So much work to do between now and then. Note: I'll be totally off-line for the week of June 6th.) -
Whoa... -- the Insane Clown Posse has an orchestra? What miracles do not cease?

Image came through here the 2nd time I looked at this thread (but not the first).

To date, I've never been much for vocal jazz -- except for the arguably weird "heavy small group, with chorus" genre -- which I do rather like, and also the vocals some oddball 70's 'Strata East' and 'Nimbus' type things. Also, June Tyson, with Sun Ra. But, I do have a tiny smattering of things with Abbey Lincoln, that have begun to grow on me over the years, primarily "We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite" and she sings on one cut of Max Roach's "It's Time". (And maybe something else I can't remember at the moment.) So, what are my next TWO recommended purchases for Ms. Lincoln? (And with my recent downsizing, I gotta limit myself to two things at most - at least for now.) Also, isn't she on one or two things with/by Eric Dolphy? - seems like I've heard one or two cuts, ages ago. I'm leaning towards stuff by her in the 60's, but wondering if she had any killer dates in the 70's as well?

Some "before and after" photos are HERE (one big one) -- and several others HERE (several, scroll down). Each one has a 'slider' widget that let's you move back and forth (left and right) to see the before and after in the same frame. Also... -
Mingus on Candid (especially with Ted Curson)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Yeah, no plans to buy the copycat here. I avoid that kind of stuff if at all possible (unless it's otherwise never-available live stuff, then all bets are off. ).
