  1. I think he actually means this. Thanks for posting Ray! I'm sure he'd get a gort to do the deed.
  2. Put me down for $100 too. I'd LOVE to have and hear that Cherry material someday. Would some sort of grass-root effort be of any value here?? Please note, I don't want to jump the gun and suggest a letter-writing campaign (cuz I understand these things are sometimes best finessed behind the scenes). But if several dozen people were willing to put up $50 or $100 each -- would that maybe get through to the powers that be??? Wishful thinking, to be sure, but stranger things have happened on rare occasion. Chuck, any advice for us here?? (And I suspect this is gonna come up at least once every three or four years, as long as this material is still in the can.) I jumped the gun last time (check JSangry's original Diz-n-Bird thread, deep in the thread where some discussion of this unreleased Cherry and Lacy came up -- where I suggested 'carpet-bombing' a certain someone with letters and e-mail about this, which it turned out would have probably been very counterproductive)... ...so, I think it would be helpful to know -- is there a more constructive way to go about trying to -- in the words of JSngry -- FREE THE ATLANTIC TRIOS!!! (Or maybe we just let it lie, until this comes up again in about 2009 or 2010.) PS: Wasn't there some speculation that we might see an "unreleased and long-out-of-print Atlantic material" Mosaic Select sometime?? -- that would include the Cherry, Lacy, as well as Hasaan's long thought lost single leader date??

    Don Cherry

Found this thread searching for something else. Cool read, up for more eyeballs.
  4. From another thread, almost four years ago...
  5. Still, to say Miles and Trane were completely crap is pretty fucking stupid.
  6. More, with a little explaination of why he (supposedly) hates jazz, or at least (clearly) loves saying he does... November, 2001 -- Modern Drummer
  7. Seems Copeland's opinion of jazz is somewhat variable... Interview from October 2001
  8. Reading this, and the rest of the interview - the guy clearly has 'issues'. Wouldn't be the first time a talented musician turned out to also be a major jerk.
  9. Damn, I just listened to most of this one last night - and was even thinking of starting a thread about it. Wild collection of material. Law Years and Happy House are my favorites -- Law Years especially.
  10. For the moment anyway, here's a link to most of the press conference 'show' they did on Monday. http://www.xmission.com/~pashdown/Police_Whisky_20070212.asf The first little bit of the first song is cut off. The video runs about 40 minutes or so. PS: Here's a report I cobbed from another board...
  11. Well, Sting turns 56 this year, and Copeland will turn 55. And much to my surprise, Andy Summers turns 65 this year! I had no idea that Summers was almost 10 years older than the other two. (Not that 65 is all THAT old any more (my Dad turns 80 this year, and I'm pushing 40), but still -- I had no idea that Summers was already 35 years old when he first joined the band in early '78 -- while the other two were only about 25 each.)
  12. Sorry people. All y'all who're hatin' on The Police are just plain wrong. I think most of their music HAS stood up as well or better that anything released during that same timeframe ('77-'83). Has "Every Breath You Take" aged well?? Or "King of Pain" or "Wrapped Around Your Finger"?? Well, no, they certainly haven't. But 80+% of their total output is as fresh today as when it came out. Nearly everything on their first four albums is great, and probably the better, more "hard-hitting" half of their fifth (and last) album -- which otherwise marks the beginnings of Sting's march into "solo-esque" Sting material (like all the megahits I cited by name above). And UNLIKE the Eagles (or Pink Floyd even), this band will probably mix things up quite a lot when they trudge out their older material. The Eagles and Floyd, on the other hand, just recreate their album material in concert, note for note, sound for sound, ZZZZzzzzzz..... Name me one act as popular that's come on the scene since 1975, that was and still is as capable of group improvisation and relatively complex group interplay?? Copeland is arguably one of the most interesting Rock drummers of the last 30 years (say what you want about liking him or not, but he has a real voice). And Summers has some quite serious improv chops too, well within the same ballpark as some of the best prog musicians you can name. And like it or not, Sting has written some damn fine material in his day. Sure, he's a snoozefest when he's not being challenged (which is about everything he's done since about 1992), but he's a far different animal with Copeland pushing him metrically, and Summers pushing him harmonically. THAT Sting is a serious MOFO, and I think (or at least hope) he's still capable of being pushed and pissed off enough to really matter again. So yeah, count me as a fan. And if I can somehow swing it, I'll sure be trying to catch these guys on tour, HELL YEAH!!!
  13. A new compilation, from what I've heard... I'd be very surprised to see a new studio album. More like a new box set, according to some supposedly good sources. Also (supposedly), it will include a quite a bit of previously unreleased material, though what that might consist of... (demos?? -- previously unreleased live material?? -- live-in-the-studio-run-thrus?? -- etc.) ...is a subject open to rampant speculation. Unfortunately the one track-list that's been circulating is just a bunch of previously released remixes of Police tunes, plus a repackaging of the live double-CD -- so I'm completely inclined NOT to believe it (and suspect it's not at all real). But there is supposed to be some sort of new Police box coming (by Xmas? - wild guess), FWIW.
  14. Completely forgot about that thread. Nah, our old printer still mostly works, though it has certainly seen much better days. I figured that we were gonna get a new PC, we'd spring for a new printer as well -- especially since our current one (an extremely 'low-end' Lexmark, model Z52) is pretty worn and battered.
  15. I guess that's what I get for asking a couple fairly restrained questions in this thread. 1) I wonder who's gonna be on the date... 2) Wonder if we'll see it out before the year is over... Good thing I didn't get all crazy with a bunch of irrational exuberance, or anything.
  16. Probably gonna get a Dell computer (at least we think), and here are the printers we could get bundled with our system... All-in-one Inkjets (from Dell) B&W Lasers (from Dell) Color Lasers (from Dell)
  17. Gonna bite the bullet and get a new PC for our home, and I'm really on the fence about what sort of printer to get. While price is certainly a factor, I'm more interested in something that will really last, that isn't gonna drown us in on-going costs for either ink-jet or toner cartridges. (So overall cost, including ongoing costs, are really what matters.) Yes, that means I've NOT (yet) decided on whether to get an inkjet printer, or a home laser-printer. Color would be nice, but I could be swayed into getting a B&W laser-printer if there's a good argument to be made for it (over an inkjet). Are the lowest-end home color laser-printers anything even worth looking at?? (I'm assuming not, but what do I know?) I just want a good printer, that will work well for 6 or 7 years -- and that won't soak us with ongoing costs. Don't know how to quantify how much we print here, but I'm sure it's not more than average. We certainly don't print a whole lot of stuff, I do know that. Any brands to really stay away from?? Recent horror stories to share??
  18. Still a bargain, IMHO. I can't find RVG's anywhere in town around here for less than $11.99 each, and usually they're $12.99.
  19. ( really big version of the same new publicity photo, as above ) Footage from last night's telecast, on Youtube... The Police at The Grammys 2007
  20. Chew-chew's first post in this thread (that kicked it all off)... Chewy? Caps-lock ace? Can capitalize sanely? And use dashes too??
