DG has always come through in the past for me. Never had an order go missing, but had one come damaged (totally smashed) - and they made the whole thing 100% right. GREAT on-line vender. Can't say enough good things about their service.

Didn't have a clue about jazz when I was in high school (circa '83-'87), but I was a HUGE Hendrix nut for a couple years in there -- does that count? (Nothing could have prepared me better for late 60's and early 70's Miles - that's for sure.) In high school I probably heard a bit of my uncle's big band records over the years (he was always have me listen to stuff - but I only saw him about once a year when he was with his record collecton). And my mom had some Kenton I may have spun once just two see what it was. I took a Jazz 101 course in college during junior year, and really took an interest about a year after that (it took a while to sink in).

If it's a Laswell "reconstruction" project, I'd be all over that in a hearbeat. Actually, if I was a betting man - that's what I'd put my money on it being. That would make the most sense, particularly with the wacky title.

New Selects and singles up on the board
Rooster_Ties replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Turrentine box was also a selection of various albums from a fairly long time-frame. -
I heard earlier today that as of Monday, my friend was responsive (good), but he was only able to move his fingers and toes on one side of his body (bad). Well, as of today -- my friend is now responding (eye blinking and such, he has a breathing tube down his throat, and can't talk), and best of all... He is able to move his hands/fingers/toes -- on BOTH sides of his body. From an e-mail I got from a co-worker of his... Hoping for the best -- but all in all, this is pretty good news.

Sounds wonderful!! (or maybe dreadful ) Hard to tell which at this point. Can't wait to hear some on-line samples.

Oh don't sweat if, five. I laughed my ass off at your post -- but didn't want to spoil it for anyone else.

By the way, I never know what section of my CD's to file Karen's stuff... Not exactly jazz, not exactly pop. Every few years I reorganize my CD's (more like putting away the 400 CD's I haven't refiled since the last time I did a reorg), and I think I usually end up switching whatever section I have her in from the last time. (She's in Jazz at the moment, and destined for my pop CD's by mid-2008 -- only to return to Jazz by 2010.) Funny as hell, and musically quite a bit deeper than either she or these albums appear on the surface.

Was listening to some Karen yesterday, and again - I'm totally taken with her quirky style. And the tunes are pretty solid too!!

At the risk of being chided for not asking about the music, may I inquire as to the actual length of the CD? How much over 80 minutes? I do intend to pick this one up when I get the chance (when I have some more scratch to do so). And no - the disc-length has NO bearing on my decision whether to buy it or not!! Thanks!! -

Just got the word a few hours ago that a former co-worker of mine (from a previous job), friend of mine, and all-around one of the nicest people you'd ever want to know or work with --- came down with bacterial meningitis sometime in the last week (I didn't hear specifically when). He's in the hospital (intensive care), and I think he's in a coma. (The description I got second-hand was that he was brought into the emergency room and was "non-responsive" -- which sounds like a coma to me.) The guy just got divorced about 6 or 8 months ago, and it was his ex-wife he gave me a call actually -- concerned that not many people will have heard about it. His parents were in town visiting him, thank god, and if they hadn't discovered him (in whatever state they discovered him), there's a 99% chance he'd be dead now (from what she told me, and from what I've read about bacterial meningitis, on-line, a few hours ago. I'm gonna have some seemingly stupid questions for you all. It's literally been years since anyone I've known has been in the hospital for any kind of emergency situation. 20 years ago, you used to be able to call a hospital and they'd tell you some vague status of a patient. No details, but they'd at least tell you what their official "medical status" was, be it critical, or stable, and whether they were in Intensive Care, or had been moved out of ICU. But with patient confidentiality issues what they are in this day and age, I'm assuming they won't tell you squat anymore. My only contact at this point is the guy's ex-wife, who I'm hoping will at least give me updates once a week, or if his status changes drastically. But I only have her e-mail (no phone number, at least not yet), and I don't know how in the loop she's gonna be even - day to day - since they're no longer together (though that is farily recent). They've got 3 kids - one something like age 6 and a set of twins who are about 4 or 5. (The divorce was rather accrimonious, and it wasn't his idea.) I'm really torn up inside about my friend. We only get together about 3 times a year anymore, but he's the only co-worker I've really ever kept up in all the years since I graduated college in '91. Everything I've heard or read about bacterial meningitis is scary as hell. If it doesn't kill you, there's this to worry about if you survive... I'd like* to circle up some friends of his to try and create some sort of support network for his parents, who are still in town (originally just for the holidays, they live on the east coast) - and likely will be for several weeks, even up to several months or more. *But the trouble is -- I really don't know ANY of his friends (I knew him from work), and he was a bit of a loner, especially since he was originally from the east coast, and didn't have any friends or family here in KC when he and his then wife moved here (to be near her family). I swear I've read somewhere (recently) about some guy who got bacterial meningitis a couple years ago (a week or two before he was about to graduate from KU), and my wife and I seem to remember that although he survived, he was in the hospital for several months, and wasn't able to finally get home for nearly a full year from the initial onset. Very worried about my friend -- a good soul, if ever there was one.

First box-set you ever got?
Rooster_Ties replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
OK, well, the Cherry box was probably my first JAZZ box set. Didn't realize this topic was for any kind of box set. Hmmmm..... Maybe the first Clapton "Crossroads" set? Having a tough time remembering, cuz I used to work for a top 40 radio station way back in college, and I managed to score a few promo sets back around '89 / '90 -- and I bought a few things on a lark too (which I don't own any more, that includes the Clapton). I had a shit-load of Hendrix back then, but were there any Hendrix boxes our circa the late 80's?? I can't think of any. The Floyd "Shine On" box didn't come out until way after "Crossroads", so that's out (I went through a big Floyd phase my Freshman year of College). No Zappa boxes to be had back then. No Miles boxes either. That about covers my early musical fanatical phases. Maybe that first Jethro Tull box?? -- but that had to be after "Crossroads" too. "Crossroads" had to be it. -
First box-set you ever got?
Rooster_Ties replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Probably the Don Cherry Mosaic. It was the first Mosaic I ever bought (maybe around 1994? - maybe '95), and would have had to have been one of the first box sets I ever owned. -
OK, here's what I've got cooked up, at least at the moment. May add to it or change it a bit more in the morning. How's this sound? - read with appropriate dramatic pauses (which explains the run-on sentences, copious use of commas, and other punctuational irregularities -- which make NO sense when looking at it in print ).
