  1. This is one of those sets I'd love to spend a few weeks with, just to listen to once or twice -- and absorb the book. I'm not sure I want to own this set, but I'd love to "borrow" one for a little bit. (And no, not to burn it for myself, quite seriously. The number of burns of legit material that I own is miniscule, probably less than a dozen individual discs total.)
  2. Is there a really good Elton comp with a focus on his earlier stuff? I could possibly get into that. I remember liking a few of his albums (mix-tapes, possibly), when I was back in college -- that a girlfriend of mine at the time had. I have no idea what albums they were, or which tunes came from where. I do remember not being all that familiar with all the songs, so it wasn't just his "hits". The "11-17-70" thing kind of rings a bell too.
  3. Reminds me of my long-time description of the Sun Ras Arkestra as sounding at times like a high-school marching band on a collective acid trip. Way to go, Johnny!!
  4. I don't think the band Kansas is gay, nor do they promote gay-ness in any way. But listening to too much Kansas in this day and age? -- yeah, that's definitely gay. (Not that there's anything wrong with that. )
  5. Severinsen search on Youtube
  6. new meets old (meets new)
  7. No idea if they recorded, but I remember seeing a Tonight Show "Alum" band live circa 1989 (maybe '88), under the leadership of Ed Shaughnessy (drums). Actually, technically that was probably the first ever live jazz concert I ever saw. It's not the first one I usually claim to have ever seen (that would be the Either/Orchestra, a few months later), but that Shaughnessy group was actually the first.
  8. And, yeah, if we want to compare and contrast these guys WITH Miles -- that's gonna happen naturally in a thread like this -- so have at it.
  9. What are your favorite recordings (either well-known, or obscure -- or anything in between) from the 60's or 70's, with any of Miles' drummers from Miles' LIVE bands in the 70's. Either as sidemen or leaders, but on recordings other than with Miles. That's only three guys, right?? Jack DeJohnette Leon Chancler (a.k.a. Ndugu Leon Chancler) Al Foster Jack D. really was the one who I wanted to start this thread about, but I especially kept thinking about his playing with Miles, and thought I'd broaden the subject a bit. I'm scarcely aware of Chancler outside of his work with Miles. And come to think of it, nearly all my recordings with Al Foster (outside of with Miles) are from the 80's and 90's.
  10. Had to go with Cape Verdean, cuz of Woody Shaw.
  11. Same as here -- even with the underscore character the same... Rooster_Ties
  12. RE: The date in the first post -- this is a (IMHO) fantastic grey-market release, quasi-legit at best. Those two (and they are different) '68 Blakey dates with Billy Harper -- are REALLY fantastic. Many of you will cringe to hear this said, but these are seriously my two favorite Blakey Dates on record.
  13. To which I can only add... Whencesoever JSngry goeth, there goeth I.
  14. Let me say it again...
  15. Thank god at least someone still has some principles in this day and age.
  16. Wendy's Training Video Rap Word!
  17. Another nomination for the worst music video ever... Die Doraus & Die Marinas - "Fred vom Jupiter" Edit: And the song itself ain't much better!!
  18. Lenny Bruce unaired TV special Including various jazz themes at the very beginning.
  19. I might force-rank the individual sessions in a slightly different order... (for my money, the two sessions on the last disc of the Select (which made up the single disc Conn issue "Comin' On!") are the 'masterpiece') ...but all in all, Chuck's right.
  20. I think her harp playing really adds something special to this already fine date... Extensions
  21. Best of luck using "expedia travelocity, etc" without a credit card...
