Speed of a Car: C'etait un Rendezvous
Rooster_Ties replied to Mr. Gone's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Crap, can't get the movie to play. Guess it's Quicktime. Not sure I can upgrade to the latest and greatest QT, as I'm sorry to say I'm still running Windows ME ( ). Is there anywhere I can upgrade to the best version of Quicktime that still supported Win ME?? Or maybe I can run it from work. How big is the file?? (Gotta get XP one of these days.) -
I will post the answers before the end of this (2005) calendar year. I've gotten more truly ugly PM's about this than I care to mention, or get into the details of. Same with my bungling of the initial distribution. Let's all just agree to agree that I've been in the wrong in my actions (or inactions) on practically all counts related to this entire mess, and leave it at that. I'll post the answers within 30 days. Peace.

For the life of me, I can't understand why "Little Wing" isn't more of a standard (well, other than the fact Hendrix wrote it). Seriously, IMHO, LW is a stunningly beautiful ballad, and one that's also harmonically interesting – and without being the least bit off-putting about it either. As beautiful as any ballad I can think of written after the mid-60's. Right up there with Beatrice, as but one other example.

I've got a pretty good mix going currently, with the following added as artist keys... Greg Osby Steve Coleman John Zorn Ravi Coltrane Gary Thomas Woody Shaw Kenny Wheeler Tomasz Stanko Dave Douglas Mulgrew Miller Jason Moran Stefan Harris Dave Holland 5tet MMW I think the trick is to give it lots of information (feedback), like at least 5 artists to start with, and being sure to give tracks the thumbs up and thumbs down when they really deserve one or the other.
-
Say what you want, but I put in Ornette as the primary key -- and the third tune it played (after some Jackie McLean and Eric Dolphy), was the track "Respects" from this... So far, I think this thing is kick ass!! ('Cept when it played a tune by the band Kansas ( ) when I had Peter Murphy as the primary key. )

Not quite the greatest thing since bagel slicers -- BUT, they also didn't call it Pandora for nothing. I've already discovered a disc I had to buy (this one) - something that I knew my wife would love too. Turned out to be an import-only item, but I found one on eBay for relatively cheap, and pulled the trigger.

Kids in the car with you?? What the hell??

http://www.pandora.com/ I plugged in "Andrew Hill" and the first non-Hill tune it played was something off Woody's "Stepping Stones" CD. Played a Wayne Shorter tune circa 1964 next. Then Mingus. And oh, it plays full-length tunes - not just clips. You can comment (thumbs up, or thumbs down) on any or all of the tracks it plays -- and it won't ever play them again, and use that feed back when selecting future tunes. You can also add multiple artists/bands to a single radio station, or you can build an entire radio station based on individual tunes. Haven't tried it yet - but supposedly if you type in the name of a tune, you also have to pick the version you like best. Interesting. Maybe even useful (perhaps), though the jury is surely still out on that one. Also, FYI, HERE's a whole thread of discussion on this thing that I found on Fark.com (which is where I just found out about it, like 15 minutes ago).

I think DWI is Driving While Intoxicated. DUI is Driving Under the Influence. Not sure what the exact difference is. Are they just different terms for the same thing?? Or is one worse than the other?? For the record, for the last 8 years, I've probably had no more than four drinks in any given month (usually on four separate days), and there are probably three or four months out of the year when I don't even have one drink the entire month. Back when I was hanging out in jazz bars a lot more (and one particular bar all the time), I usually drank about three or four drinks over the course of a 3 hour period, about 3 or 4 nights a week. When I was in college, I didn't drink all that much (maybe one weekend-night per month), but when I started bartending my senior year, I'd have a few drinks after every shift I worked. Sometimes we'd play pool and drink free beer until the sun came up (after the place closed), while the owner did the books for the night. And NO, I never drove home drunk back then. (Didn't have a car, and I walked everywhere.) ===== ALSO, I just found an on-line Blood Alcohol Content calculator (HERE), and according to it - I wasn't anywhere near "over the limit" most of times I was refering to up above (in my first post in this thread). According to it, at my weight back then (200 lbs), I could drink up to four average mixed drinks in any three hour period (or even just a two hour period), and my BAC level would be well below the 0.08 limit. BTW, I though it was GREAT when they changed the laws to reduce the BAC levels from 0.1 to .08 -- so more people took these laws seriously.

Surprised to see there was only one paper listed for Nebraska, the one in Omaha. Woulda thunk the paper in Lincoln would have made the cut. Only one paper listed for Arkansas too. In fact, several states (all in the middle of the country) only have one or maybe two papers listed.

Thanks Noj, that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about... The ONLY time I've ever driven while really drunk was ONE TIME in high-school. EVERY other example I gave before (in my prior post) was after having drank two drinks within the prior 60-90 minutes. And to further clarify my earlier post, yes, driving under the influence is NEVER acceptable. I'm simply publicly owning up to my past behavior. For the last 7 or 8 years (since I got married, and settled down), I rarely drink (short of one drink with a meal every now and then – like maybe twice a month). And maybe one mixed-drink when I go out to hear some live music (though for the last few years, I drink coffee as much or more than alcohol). All I was saying is that driving under the influence is something many of us have done in the past, at one time or another. Yes, it is NEVER acceptable. But I know at least some of us here have occasionally done this in the past (and again, I'm 98% talking about the "two drinks within the prior hour" kind of drunk, not the "slurred speech" kind of drunk), and it's foolish to pretend like these thinks never happened. In my prior post, my "pride" in the having rarely driven after drinking, is in the recognition that nearly everyone who leaves a bar at or near closing time probably shouldn't be driving. And that over the course of my lifetime, I've hardly ever driven under the influence. Yes - I've done it a time or two. It's NOT something I'm proud of -- but the infrequency of it is something to be proud of. I worked as a bartender for a few years (about 15 years ago), while I was in college (at a bar mostly college kids went to). And my behavior was MUCH more acceptable and WAY more cautious than the VAST majority of the patrons I served. (I always worked from about 10pm until closing, around 2pm – sometimes 3pm.)
-
I'm sure, over the years, that most of us have probably driven under the influence, here and there - at least a few times anyway. I know I have. BUT, I'm rather proud of the fact that I've done so only a very small handful of times in my life. Probably less than I can count on two hands. Once in high school during my senior year (and only because I was the least shit-faced person of those in the car), and then three or maybe four times in college. There was also this jazz bar (The Drum Room) that I discovered shortly after I moved to Kansas City in the mid-90's, that for about two years I used to occasionally drive home from after a few drinks. BUT, the drive was only like three blocks long from the bar to my house, and was literally down a "back" back alley (not even a city street - I just checked, and Yahoo Maps doesn't have it), and then two more blocks on the most "side street" side street you could ever imagine (with almost NO traffic on it after 9pm). Usually I'd walk home, but in the winter - when it was cold - I took my chances. (Same when it was raining.) All in all, I'm pretty risk adverse, and I'm a pretty safe driver too (no accidents ever, other than tapping the bumper of another car on wet pavement back in 1986 - when I was still in high school).

Jimi Hendrix birthday on WKCR Jazz Profiles
Rooster_Ties replied to 7/4's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
FWIW, I was born the same day Hendrix recorded his studio version of The Star Spangled Banner --> 18-Mar-1969. (BTW, his studio version is pretty lame, IMHO -- with WAY too much overdubbing of guitar part, upon guitar part, upon guitar part.) I think I discovered him when I was roughly a freshman in high school (circa 1984). Went through a HUGE Hendrix phase, including the purchase of well over 30 LP's of bootleg live material, studio outtakes, unreleased studio stuff, etc... Got hold of and dubbed every piece of video I could find too - which came to about 6 or 7 hours of material (as I recall). Sold off all the bootlegs late in my college years (probably my junior year) -- not so much cuz I didn't dig Hendrix any more - but my focus shifted on to other things. But I've picked up nearly all of the official releases over the years, so I still have a fairly large collection. -
Milt Ward (trumpet) - "and Virgo Spectrum" - circa 1976

Well, I finally got the LP in the mail today. The vinyl looks near-mint (or at least close) to my eyes. The cover is closer to VG+. Haven't spun it yet (no turntable ), but I'm headed over to a buddy's house Monday afternoon - and hope to spin it then. Can't wait!! -
Was very slow for me today as well (sometimes VERY slow). Sometimes up to speed, but slow much more often than not.
-
Funny you mention that, Sangry. I think "Live at the Berliner Jazztage" is also my all-time favorite of Woody's leader dates.
-
I've got well more than half of Woody's recorded output (probably closer to 75%), and I picked up Stepping Stones myself for the very first time a couple weeks ago -- and was also blown away. Probably one of his best 10 outings on record (leader or sideman dates included) -- even, some might say, top-5!!

George alway was and still is my favorite. -
FYI, the recycling center managed by the not-for-profit I work for (plug: Bridging The Gap just started taking cassettes, videotapes, floppy discs, cd's, cdr's, dvd's, etc... (And all the plastic cases they come in too!!) They all get reclaimed for raw materials, far as I understand. Less for the landfills -- yeah!! Check the recycling centers in your area, they may be taking cassettes too. (Got a ton in my basement, and I've been meaning to get rid of them - so now's the time.)

You sing too, Sangry?? Who knew!!

And that's fine. Tips in club settings are entirely optional (and entirely for "local" bands - if you saw, say, McCoy Tyner in a club, you'd not tip the band) , and usally come when a customer is "reached" by the music to a more-than-normal degree, and/or if "special" requests are made. But if you just have a good time from afar, no expectations are in place, none whatsoever (although most club dates pay such that a little sumpin-sumpin certainly don't hurt anybody, if you know what I mean...) But if you do tip, make it something useful, or at least something not insulting. Most of the local dates I go hear don't have a tip jar, so most of my tips have been – in a sense – unsolicited. And both of the $20 tips I've given have been entirely unsolicited -- but in both cases, I was pretty damn sure each musician on the date was making less than $50 for the night -- maybe even closer to $25 (sorry to say). Usually talented guys playing in a context that normally doesn't make a dime (like electric-era Miles type material (complete with the trumpet on a wah-wah pedal) for only $25 per musician in an alternative bar --- when they maybe could be playing conventional stuff in a conventional venue, for maybe $75 or $100 a guy for the night). In those cases, it's nice to be able to say you really appreciate what they're doing, and then back it up with enough $ for dinner for every guy in the band (well, at Taco Bell at least!!).
